Re: [sword-devel] moving away from freenode
"All Freenode Channels and Users Gone" https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/o0263h/all_freenode_channels_and_users_gone/ She's dead, Jim: I can't login to freenode any longer with my usual name/password. I see that #sword and #xiphos already exist on irc.libera.chat; #sword appears to have been registered, but I can't do anything to make #xiphos official with ChanServ because one has to be a chanop to do that, and as long as people are in the channel and no one is op (i.e. someone entered the channel which created it, others joined, 1st person left so no chanop, and it hasn't been empty since), it's a no-man's land. #bibletime exists as well but just 1 person has been seen in it. ___ sword-devel mailing list: sword-devel@crosswire.org http://crosswire.org/mailman/listinfo/sword-devel Instructions to unsubscribe/change your settings at above page

I'd rather just stick to one platform. I tried matrix for a while, it got confusing as it was yet another client I had to keep track of: Skype, Discord, Zoom (no, not really, but you know what I mean), IRC or XMPP. I settled on IRC and Discord in the end. That brings three of the largest open chat platforms used for open source (Gitter, Matrix, & IRC) able to interact in the same channels seamlessly. This means end users can connect from any of hundreds of apps from web clients to terminal clients to native desktop apps to mobile apps. With bridging enabled all three ecosystems operate natively as if everybody was in the same place. +1 I'm in for keeping an IRC Channel. I'm using an XMPP server which provides an IRC Gateway. So I'm able to connect to IRC channels with any XMPP client (https://dino.im/ actually). I tried Matrix/element/fractal for a while but I prefer this setup. It has the double benefit of beeing fast and lightweight which is of great interest when you have a slooow Internet connection or running on batteries. -- Dom ___ sword-devel mailing list: sword-devel@crosswire.org http://crosswire.org/mailman/listinfo/sword-devel Instructions to unsubscribe/change your settings at above page
Re: [sword-devel] moving away from freenode
Yes, the Freenode meltdown is *way* ahead of schedule. I've been watching the train wreck from a safe distance and it's one of the most reckless and wantonly irresponsible series of events I've witnessed in internet history. In 2021 that's saying something. Everything there needs to be evacuated post haste. Personally I'd like to see the IRC channel survive and migrate to either Libera or OFTC. Both of those networks now have operational Matrix bridges. Discord is a cool system, but it is a closed source platform and relatively closed ecosystem. It is not easy to connect to from the terminal, and the mobile app isn't something I'm going to leave running, etc. Since there isn't much choice in apps I'm kind of stuck with their version, which may or may not suite different needs. I've been okay with it for special purposes like a conference, but find it too high friction to stay connected indefinitely. Caleb P.S. I would suggest the same for #xiphos as well. Note #bibletime has gone with OFTC. Honestly, I would prefer a Matrix protocol system, if we're going to move away from IRC. From a freedom and ownership perspective, Discord is worse than Freenode.
