You mean, it has all the features that most decent text editors have.

Ive never com across that and im on a g4 800, ha! But i dont think ive ever
had more than 12 tabs open and normally i only have 1-6 open at a
time...anymore than that and it just gets annoying (but i keep my window no
more than 80 cols wide). I can tell you Eclipse with more than like 6 or 8
tabs slows to a crawl.

As far as popularity, it may have been initially the Rails craze, but i
think that just sort of put a spotlight on it. I dont know many rails
developers, but i know a ton of textmate users :)

Not unpopular, just wrong :p

It's because of crop circles ;)

Or maybe because it's lightweight, has syntax highlighting,
powerful keyboard shortcuts and built in support for many languages/
formats via bundles?

I use it mainly for editing my yml, sql, css and ini files... I prefer
Komodo Edit for my PHP editing - it does all of that, but also has
code completion. It's a little heavier on resources though.

At the risk of being unpopular, I think TM is "trendy" because of Rails.

I dislike most IDEs so vim + svn is fine for me (and even more
lightweight).

[symfony-users] Re: off topic: svn gui for OS X

2008-05-02 Thread prodigitalson

I feel the same as Jon. If you have a really complex application Eclipse can be invaluable for the automatic API hinting, code versioning (the merge/diff editor in Subclipse is brillant!), debug, and general code inspection. But if what youre doing is fairly lightweight like theming a cms or building something out of Symfony plugins or something on this level Textmate is jsut too efficient. Eclipse doesn't stand a chance. Ive taken to using Textmate for things where Im jsut theming or making a simple application. When it comes to writing plugins or working on something huge I generally break out Eclipse. When i switch to 1.1 I'll also probably use Eclipse exclusively at first to help me learn all the new stuff as I go and remind me of the API changes.

Plus, I had issues with Eclipse crashing, so I went back to textmate as my primary editor.

[symfony-users] Re: off topic: svn gui for OS X

2008-05-02 Thread Jonathan Franks

I do use svn from the command line, but I prefer a graphical interface
for browsing files.

If you got a bit of time, you can learn using svn through the command
line interface, it's not that hard and you always know what you are
doing :)

[symfony-users] Re: off topic: svn gui for OS X

2008-05-02 Thread Andreas Hucks

IMO, both RapidSvn and svnX are far too buggy and incomplete to actually
use. Development of both apps seems to have stopped long ago as well.

SCPlugin looks promising, but has a few bugs listed that make me not
want to use it yet...

SyncroSVNClient is pretty awesome for me. It's not free, but very
affordable.

Cheer,
Andreas

SCPlugin is meant to be comparable to Tortise. Ive used it a couple times
but i usually just use Subclipse from inside eclipse. Its rare I have to
mess with svn too much outside of Eclipse. There is also svnX and a few
others. I tried svnX but i didnt like it too much.
