RE: t-and-f: Top 10 list: What's your best running song ever?

2001-08-18 Thread Andrew Eldredge-Martin

There was one summer when Eye of the Tiger was the nly thing that could
get me out of the door. It was hot and humid and I really didn't feel
like going out to run after a day at my first full time job. Turn on the
song and suddenly I was transformed into motivation-man!

Yes, Where the streets have no name, great song to play at 5am while
stumbling around in a hypnogogic daze in search of your running gear.

  Another great running song:

I Run Alone (apologies to George Thorogood)

  I run alone, yeah,
  with nobody else
  I run alone,
  yeah,
  with nobody else
You know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself

  Every morning just before breakfast,
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and my good buddy roads,
  that's all I ever need
  'Cause I run alone,
  yeah,
  with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself

The other night I laid sleeping,
and I woke from a terrible dream
I dreampt my coach was Jack Daniels,
  and his partner Jeff Galloway
  And we ran alone,
  yeah,
  with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself

The other day I got invited to a race,
but I stayed home ran hills instead,
Just me and my pal Mr Fartlek,
and we ran hard until we were dead,
  And we ran alone,
  yeah,
  with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself

I train hard and I win easy,
and it makes me feel oh so good
The only ones who keep up with me,
are skinny Kenyans if they could
  And we run alone,
  yeah,
  with nobody else
Yeah, you know why I run alone?
'Cause prefer to win the race by myself

Just sent in HTML format in error. Apologies if you are
getting twice. It should have got bounced.

   Buck,
You underestimate the song. IMHO, that is the best intro to
the best song of the best rock album by the best group ever
made, period. It transcends running but if you insist, the
   lyrics go on to say:

I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
   That hold me inside.
   I wanna reach out
   And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

Several running references. You have to touch the flame once
in a while, for example, if you want to excel. Regards,

   Martin

U2: Where the streets have no name

We did a running video to this tune at a camp I once worked
as a counselor. We had the campers running from the other
   side of the hill (racing
actually) - a very long lens shot, heat waves, etc. The song
opens with a very rythmic instrumental and as the runners
crested the hill the lyrics began, I want to run...

   Very cool :-)

   Cheers,
   Buck

Of course there is always The Lonliness of the Middle-Distance Runner by
Belle and Sebastian. They played the sonf live for a long time, but never
released it until there most recent single Jonathan David on which it is
a B-side.

Have you ever gone out for a run and gotten a song stuck in your head?
I find that some songs lend
themselves better than others to making it through a long run on a day
when you would just as soon stay
 home and de-frost the freezer.

I'd like to nominate Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd from the album The

Uh, maybe I'm wrong butcan't most WC guys who run 3:53 and better run
 at
  least 47-48? Just wonderin'.

 I doubt it - otherwise you'd see 3:45 1500m guys representing their
 countries at 4x4 relay legs.

Re: t-and-f: World 10k bests and rabbits

2001-06-07 Thread Andrew Eldredge-Martin

Of course, there is always a question of what actually constitutes a
rabbit. Is someone a rabbit if they lead a marathon out through the
first half? What if they are just trying to keep the pace fast for
themselves? Many rabbits finish the races they start, so are they rabbits
or are they trying to ru a fast time themselves thinking that they will
fare better in a fast race as opposed to a kickers race.

You could specify that no money can exchange hands for the rabbiting, but
many of the races I have actually seen rabbited were done without monetary
compensation...

tricky subject.

Interesting. How long have rabbits been used on a consistant basis? Any
guess what the record would be without rabbits? How about 5k? Would the 5k
record be under 12:50 without rabbits? How about the marathon? If the record
makers had to set the pace themselves what would the distance records be?
 Something to think about.

There have been 14 sub 27:00 10ks, how many of those were run without
 rabbits?

I think the answer to this is zero.

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by
   Microsoft
and by McAfee as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered
yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This
virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital
information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the
   following
manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with
   the
title "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is
opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the
ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys
   Sector
Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few
hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by
   CNN ( www.cnn.com http://www.cnn.com/=20
http://www.cnn.comhttp://www.cnn.com/; ). This alert was received
 by
   an
employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with subject "A
Virtual Card for You". As soon as you get the mail, delete it. Please
   pass
on this mail to all your friends. Forward this to everyone in your
   address
book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all. Also: Intel
   announced that a new and
very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email
called "An Internet Flower For You", do not open it. Delete it right way!
This virus removes all dynamic link libraries(.dll files) from your
computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up. SEND THIS TO
   EVERYONE
   ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!!
