Yegorova drops threats to sue

Posted Tue, 04 Sep 2001
Russia's drug-tainted 5,000m world champion Olga Yegorova Tuesday dropped
her threat to sue Romania's Gabriela Szabo and Briton Paula Radcliffe.
Yegorova said it was time to move on and she had punished Szabo enough by
taking her 5,000m crown at the world championships in Edmonton last month.

t-and-f: Steeplechaser moons crowd, loses medal...

2001-08-24 Thread Ken Parker

From over the moon to a bum rap:

Mother defends her son
Sean Fitz-Gerald
National Post, with files from The Canadian Press.
A Quebec athlete's cheeky celebration has sparked a cultural controversy at
the Canada Summer Games, with his mother claiming mooning is normal in their
home province.
Daniel Blouin was sent home from the Games in London, Ont., yesterday, a day
after being disqualified for mooning the crowd when he finished third in the
3,000-metre steeplechase.
Quebecers, Montrealers, they do these things, Lucie Blouin told The
Canadian Press from her home in Le Gardeur, Que., northeast of Montreal,
yesterday. They do it spontaneously, it's normal here but in Ontario it's
not normal.

t-and-f: Russian athletics considering suing Szabo

2001-08-23 Thread Ken Parker

Russian athletics considering suing Szabo
MOSCOW, Aug 23 (Reuters) - The Russian athletics federation is considering
legal action against Gabriela Szabo and her manager in the row over world
5,000 metres champion Olga Yegorova and the performance-enhancing
erythropoietin (EPO).
Yegorova tested positive for EPO at the Paris Golden League meeting in July
and was initially suspended from the world championships in Edmonton earlier
this month, but was later cleared to compete because the test did not
conform to International Olympic Committee (IOC) standards.

t-and-f: More on Surin False Start?

2001-07-23 Thread Ken Parker

Paul Dupre, the Games' executive director of sport, said yesterday
that the starter and three assistant starters determined there had
been no false start because of an electrical malfunction of the
starting-block mechanism that determines a runner's reaction time to
the sound of the gun.
Saturday an official from the Finishlynx timing company refuted that
claim.
There was no technical malfunction. None, said the official on the
condition of anonymity, whose company is in charge of timing here.

t-and-f: Bruny Surin False Start??

2001-07-21 Thread Ken Parker

Surin avoids disqualification
Sprinter appeared to false-start twice

From today's Ottawa Citizen:

Bruny Surin, a world and Olympic medallist, appeared to false-start twice in
the quarter-final round, but track officials waved it off without
explanation.
...

Ottawa's Glenroy Gilbert, who ran beside Surin in Lane 5, was furious
immediately after stepping off the track.

Why not ask the officials? said Gilbert, when quizzed about the disputed
second false start against Surin. They know what happened, and I'm sure you
do, too.
...

Cameroon runner Alfred Moussambini, who started in Lane 8, said Surin was
saved by the fact the international competition was held in Canada.

They (track officials) say there was no false start, Moussambini
explained. There was no charge because, I think, I'm sure, we're in Canada.

I'm sure if it was another guy, it would be immediate (disqualification).
But we're in Canada.

There was a good article on Bob Hayes in the Orlando Sentinel this week:

Still running:
Mike Bianchi of the Sentinel Staff

JACKSONVILLE -- The World's Fastest Human is in a wheelchair on this day,
his legs weakened by radiation, his mind clouded by painkillers, his body
beaten by years and years of running too many races in too many fast lanes.

Bob Hayes always had been able to outrun his pursuers, but life has finally
caught up with him. Too many years, too many beers. Mick Jagger was right. .
. . What a drag it is growing old.

Can't even outrun a sports writer now, Hayes, 58, says laughing and
coughing and wincing. They used to call me Bullet Bob. Now I'm Blimpo Bob.

Genes give black runners edge: findings
Dominate track and field: Kenyan Olympic gold medallist condemns
research.

Danish sports researchers have found that black runners have a genetic
advantage over white athletes that allows them to run faster and
longer.

The scientific findings, which were presented on a British television
documentary last night, explain black runners' world domination of
track and field and come amid an ongoing academic controversy over
whether racial differences influence athletic and intellectual
ability.

t-and-f: Interval Training

2000-11-25 Thread Ken Parker

"Classical interval running training was developed in Germany in the 1930s,
and the complete workout is fairly tightly structured and monitored by
stopwatches (Reilly, 1981). The original form of interval running as
conceived by the German coach Gerschler and physiologist Reindall was to
repeat a set distance in a set time with a fixed recovery jog between (Watts
 Wilson, n.d.). A typical session for a 1500-meter runner with a personal
best of 3:40 could be 8 repetitions of 400 meters in 57 to 58 seconds, with
a recovery jog of 300 meters covered in 3 minutes (Alford, Holmes, Hill
Wilson, 1985). "

t-and-f: Drugs in Sport

2000-08-30 Thread Ken Parker

The comment " Sure we'd get rid of the East German marks that are documented
to be dirty" was made in today's list.

All GDR marks can be considered dirty. In 1977 I was in the GDR for 3 weeks
as part of the first group of Western coaches and sports officials allowed
into the country. They said to us point blank, when asked about how such a
small country could have won so many medals at Montreal, " It's not just the
steroids". They made absolutely no attempt to deny that they used drugs.
Their position was that steroids administered under medical supervision were
safe. It is likely true that many athletes did not even know that they were
on steroids.
