As I was announcing the meet, I noticed the wind swirls resulting in

Hi Gang,
Have not talked to you for awhile. Wanted you to know that I have a

Many thanks.

t-and-f: 2004 FAST Annual

2004-05-14 Thread Scott Davis
Hi Gang! I know, where have I been? Well, after Mt. SAC, I ran into
some medical problems that caused me to spend a lot of time in bed
resting. Doing much better now and looking forward to seeing you on the
circuit this summer, beginning with Home Depot next weekend.

At any rate, I now finally have copies of the 2004 FAST Annual, the 26th
edition of this great book. Again, it is combined with the USATF Media
Guide and this is perhaps the best book yet in the series. 682 pages of
data, color photos, bios, index data, records, schedules, etc., etc.,
etc.. Really a terriric book and one everyone should have. Paid up
FAST members will be receiving their copies within the next 7-10 days.
FAST members who have not yet sent in dues are encouraged to do so; I
will not ship the annual until dues are paid as is customary. All
others may order a copy by sending me 22.50 for regular postage or 25.50
for priority in the US. Folks ordering from foreign countries should
write to me first so I can quote the postage rates. Responses are
handled much faster if you write to me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] As usual, all
checks payable to me and sent to 4432 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, CA.

Thanks much and I hope to see you all soon.

TFN is pretty much the arbiter on CRs that take place up to and including the
NCAA meet. For those marks through Sept. 1, FAST is pretty much the arbiter.

Not quite right. I talked to Stacy afterwards. She said that she asked for the
bar to go to 476 but it went to 481 by mistake. If this is indeed true, and I
have no reason to believe otherwise, then she CAN have the bar lowered for three
attempts at the height she originally wanted. As I was announcing at that time,
I thought it quite strange that the bar went to 481. I do recall her looking up
at the bar after the miss and immediately conferring with the officials. It was
not until her third attempt at 476 that we got word from the floor as to what
had happened.

From Frank Litsky's column in today's NY Times:

When Stacy Dragila competes in the women's pole vault in the Millrose Games,
the heights of the bar, as usual, will be predetermined. But if only one
vaulter remains, the officials will be reminded that the predetermined
 heights no longer matter.
That did not happen Saturday night in the Boston Indoor Games, and there
could have been embarrassment and a disallowed world record. Dragila won at
15 feet 5 1/2 inches, an American record. The officials raised the bar to
15-9 1/4, the height on their chart and equaling Dragila's world outdoor
record. Dragila took one vault at that height, missed, then realized she
never had a chance to attempt 15-7 1/4, which would have broken Svetlana
Feofanova's world indoor record of 15-7.
The rules say that except for tie-breaking purposes, a bar cannot be
lowered. But because the officials had failed to consult Dragila before the
15-9 1/4 vault, they agreed to lower the bar to 15-7 1/4 and she was given
three attempts. She missed them all.
If she had cleared 15-7 1/4, there might have been controversy about whether
that should be accepted as a record. Now it doesn't matter. On Sunday,
Feofanova raised her world indoor record to 15-7 1/4.

8.25m (I'm sure it was actually measured at 27'0 3/4) at Irvine on June 16 1971.
This
performance is listed also in the 1975 ATFS annual, but not in the 1976 ATFS annual
and not in any subsequent ATFS or FAST publications that I have.

I was two in 1971 so my memory of the performance is a little shaky. But I know
there are people on this list who were actually keeping stats at the time, and a
27-footer would not have passed unnoticed - why would Ron Coleman appear in the stats
books
immediately after his jump and then disappear four years later?

Apologies to anyone offended by the subject line OLD long jump stat question in

When I lived in Anchorage the running joke was that in the 1950's when
Congress was ready to admit Alaska as a state, the Texans were furious that
they'd no longer be the largest state. The governor of Alaska supposedly
responded that if Texans kept up the whining, Alaska would divide itself into
TWO states, and then Texas would rank #3 in size. :)

Back to the subject at hand, which started out as being something about
unbudgeted travel to the south end of New Jersey-
I went to high school in Florida, where long travel was the norm, and here in
California it's often the norm as well. Both long skinny states. Well not
THAT skinny- probably as wide as most states.
Anyway, the way my Fla HS's athletic department worked it, if the coach wanted
to take you to the Florida Relays, the school would pay for gas, but not
overnight lodging- if you didn't want to drive back the parents had to pay for
the lodging. But for the state meet, if you qualified (which was RARE at our
school) the school rewarded you with an overnight stay at a Day's Inn or
something of that sort, as well as gas.
Since people qualified so rarely, the state meet was an unbudgeted item, but
they found a way to squeeze up some dough. (about once every five years for an
individual, never lucky enough to get a 'team' there, at least until my
brother became coach about 15 years later).
If your team does qualify most years, and the state meet is in the same place,
and you've got plenty of notice where it's gonna be, then it becomes basically
 a budget planning/prioritization exercise.

I get the drift that some of the complaint in the New Jersey case is fairness-
northern schools have to fork up bigger annual travel budgets than southern
 schools.
Hint: look at California's solution- the meet rotates annually between two
sites- Sacramento one year, and Scott Davis' backyard the next year.

Let's not be so critical of Darts. This is truly one of the world's great
games. In fact, I was a member of a team in the early 1970's in Westwood
while in grad school at UCLA. I was the only non-Brit on the team of 8.
We played 301 and cricket exclusively. Not the cricket with the bats and
balls!! Darts is one hell of a hand-eye coordination game, just like pool
and golf, but don't get me started with golf. Just please remember that
golf is a game, like pool and darts, not an athletic endeavor. I do
remember that the Ye Ole Mucky Duck, one of our competitive bars, had Tom
Jones on their team. Yes, that Tom Jones!! He was a hell of a player and
a really fun guy. I played competitively for 6 years and won a hell of lot
of money in the process. Even today, I have a board in my garage and toss
the darts every so often while thinking about the next track project!!

To anybody who doesn't know, Darts involves fat men with a pint or two

strange markings. It is not a sport or even a skill it is a pasttime
which should be confined to pubs and bars. Usually the Brits win, which
should tell you a lot about our prowess as a sporting nation, but now
a Canadian is the world champion (how many countries play darts you
might ask for it to be a true world championship) and I see the start
of a slippery slope for Canada.
But there is hope. Part beat Phil the power Taylor and those who know
about these things said the reason Taylor was beaten after eight years
was because he'd just lost three stone (42lbs) and some must have gone
from his throwing arm. But Taylor reckons he has another three stone to
go and said: health is more important than darts.

based on the quality and rarity of the items. These guides first

Dear Mr. Heidenstrom,

I was quite disappointed to get this message from you. First, I need to
correct your information. You are incorrect when you say that Archie
signed all of his books. This is completely flase. In fact, of the
some odd 40-50 of his books that I have bought and sold over the years,
at least 75% of them were NOT signed. Also, your statement about the
1959 edition is not right. I currently have two of the copies and you
claim to have a third; I would be interested in hearing from the other
TWO people who own a copy. The book is quite scarce but there are more
than five available, I assure you.

I am quite offened by your statement which indicates you will not sell
to scalpers, implying that I may be one. You should know that I have
bought and sold some of the largest libraries and collections available
in the US and world wide over the past 25 years, including the Amos
Alonzo Stagg collection, the Maxwell Stiles collection and the holdings
from the Robert Kaiser estate. I am well familar with the scarcity of
certain items and their associated value. I sell material to true track
fans at very reasonable prices. I have always worked on the theory that
if I can buy something at a very reasonable price then I will sell it at
a very reasonable price. As an example, and I have not yet advertised
this book, I have a copy from Don's collection of the 1912 Swedish
Olympic report. This is a scarce book to say the least. I purchased
my copy of this book in Stockholm some years back for 350 US dollars.
It is well worth 500-600 US dollars at this time. However, I will sell
Don's copy some day for right around 150-200 US dollars once I find a
fan who is truly interested in having the copy once owned by the
maestro.

Again, regarding the Potts material, you should know that I am trying to
place as many of these of these items in the hands of true track fans
who appreciate the fact that they were once owned by Don. The money is
going to the Potts family, not to me. I am taking only my expenses for
postage and shipping cartons. And I am putting very low prices on these
items for those very reasons. If you want to sell your copies of the
Little Black Book for a penny each, that is totally up to you. But your
implications of what I am trying to do with Don's copies are simply
unacceptable.

Finally, since you are a former ATFS member and someone who knew Don, I
am saddened that you would think I would dishonor his memory by selling
off his material for his family at scalpers prices.

Sincerely,

Scott Davis

Well Gang,
This seems to work since many of you have responded to my African Annual
post. Now, here is the next list of material from the duplicates in my
libaray, the Potts library and the the first stuff from another huge
estate I recently purchased. If you are interested in any of this
material, please write to me at BOTH ADDRESSES: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and [EMAIL PROTECTED] That way, I can process things over the weekend.
Moroever, YOU MUST SEND A CHECK AT ONCE AFTER YOU ADVISE ME THAT YOU
WANT SOMETHING. IF I DON'T GET YOUR CHECK WITHIN ONE WEEK, I WILL
SIMPLY PLACE THE BOOKS BACK ON THE LIST. Also, please add an additional
5.00 postage for 1-4 books, 10.00 for 5-8 books and 15.00 for any orders
over 8 books. As many of you know, postage is quite expensive these
days and I do send everything via First Class Postage. All of these
prices are quite reasonable considering the age and scarcity of much of
this material. Have fun. There will be much, much more material for
sale within the next few weeks.

2002-10-30 Thread Scott Davis
Gang,
I have been having much trouble with my aol account lately, so I am
trying to now post things from Mt. SAC. We shall see if this works. In
response to these messages, you may write to me either here at this
address or at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as always. So here we go. I now have copies
of the 2002 African Annual for sale, albeit few. I only have 12 so let
me know soon if you want one. North American orders only, please. As
always, great effort by Yves Pinaud with complete details of the 2001
season, all-time lists, results and lots more. Just $15.00 payable to
me at the usual address and I will send the book by priority post. I am
also working on new lists of the Potts material which will come in the
near future.
