Hi Dan,

To be honest, and hoping not to disappoint you, a duo-core CPU and only three
gigs of RAM are quite low system specs, especially running the latest version
of Window-Eyes.
Perhaps avoiding using any other software and waiting for the updates to
install might help.
Indeed, even running Narrator rather than Window-Eyes might improve speed, at
least until the updates are done.
Perhaps I'm grasping at straws, but you never know. smile

Hello,

Two important updates were available for Windows 7 today. I have the fastest
residential internet service from Comcast. I am wondering why downloading
these updates has been in progress for several hours. Last week, thirteen
important updates took almost six hours to download and install. Could someone
offer an explanation for this. Running WE 9.4, Win
7 HP 64-bit, I.E. 11 on an Acer laptop with 3 gigs of ram and a dual-core AMD
processor.

Thanks,

Dan

Re: Windows Update Question

2016-06-19 Thread net bat via Talk
don't be fooled by this statement. download speed for windows update has
little to do with weather you are useing 7 or 10 with the same service plan
you are useing.
it has to do on how much traffic there is on the microsoft server, how much
trafic on comcast. like how many people on comcast in your area is streaming
netflix and hulu. etc. if microsoft server in your area is down.
if you are streaming netflix on your system and trying to download windows
updates at the same time etc.

it could be many things that slow down the updates..
again it could be that a critical update failed and can block any further
updates from being installed until the failed update has been installed.

do you have the service packs installed? you won't get updates until you do.
if you installed the windows mail hack this may also block the updates.
with me i could not install the service packs after i installed the windows
mail hack. the windows repair tool did nothing either.
i had to wipe the drive and reinstall windows 7 and not use the windows mail
hack. then the service packs would install.

no more hacks for me.

Windows Update Question

2016-06-19 Thread Dan Rathburn via Talk

Hello,

Two important updates were available for Windows 7 today. I have the
fastest residential internet service from Comcast. I am wondering why
downloading these updates has been in progress for several hours. Last
week, thirteen important updates took almost six hours to download and
install. Could someone offer an explanation for this. Running WE 9.4, Win
7 HP 64-bit, I.E. 11 on an Acer laptop with 3 gigs of ram and a dual-core
AMD processor.

Thanks,

Dan

I experience that start menu problem more often than not. Usually, tabbing
away from and back into the display results edit field makes things talk
again.

It is only dependent upon at least a single-user license of Microsoft Office

Hi Martin:

You already have an option if you don't want to pay extra for a screenreader
and use Windows. It's called NVDA and it's pretty good.

To your point about Microsoft, though, I agree, however, that is not the
business model Microsoft has chosen to adopt like Apple has. However, since
Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, they're getting closer having beefed up Narrator
so you can actually do a few things with it.

Thanks,

The thing that worries me, is not the possibility that there might be less
choice of screen readers in the future, but that we will still have to
purchase a screen reader at all. If a company like VFO has acquired the two
largest screen readers in the assistive technology market, what does that
say about Microsoft's commitment to finally doing what they should have done
years ago: namely providing a fully functioning screen reader for its
disabled customers. It is highly unlikely that a company like VFO is
spending all that money if there was the slightest rumor that Microsoft was
finally getting itself a social conscience.
For all these years Microsoft has sat on its hands while others have taken
up the challenge of helping blind and visually impaired people find a better
quality of life. Thanks to the hard work of all the folks who have made
Window-Eyes and JAWS the great success they both are, we blind computer
users live fuller and more productive lives. However, I feel the time has
come when it should no longer be necessary for blind users to pay an
additional cost for being able to use the product of a multimillion dollar
company.
I wish all those who use, and participate in the production of adaptive
technology, in these changing and challenging times all the best which ever
way the wind blows.
