do any of you use WE with any Good Database software? And if so, which

And do any of you know if NVDA or JAWS is able to read and be used in

You are completely forgetting NVDA which is a free option, and it's
actually a screenreader worth using. it's not a toy a couple people put
together, it actually works a lot better than a lot of folks think.

So, if Window-eyes does eventually stop being developed, there is
absolutely no reason why you can't download a free copy of NVDA and use
that.

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: The only one I can think of is the Microsoft Access DB Platform.
I know one fellow who used it well with JAWS but I have never tried it with
WindowEyes.
A custom DB manager by some third party might be out there but the
accessibility of these platforms would be the question.
Building a custom DB Manager isnt too complicated but would take some time.
Is this for a job or for your personal use and how large do you think the DB
would get - that determines if you can use something simple like a file
based system or have to go to a full server based system.

RE: The future of Window-eyes

2016-10-04 Thread CJ &AA MAY via Talk
I agree. If you look at the time and expertise which has gone into
developing the product, then you can't expect to get that for nothing.
Throughout my working life Vocal-eyes and then Window-eyes has been there to
support me.

IN my naivety I have always believe that there was little to choose between
Jaws and Window-eyes but it has always seemed to me that the support given
to Window-eyes users has been far superior to that provided to Jaws users.

I'll be as sorry as anyone to see the demise of Window-eyes but am trying to
be positive. Perhaps what this merger will mean is that the technical
knowledge for both products will be brought together to create a new and
even better beast, combining the best of both systems.

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Again:
I just did a quick Google and found several candidates but figuring out
which ones offer what you are looking for would require some homework.
A question you want answered out of the box is whether the Database offers a
built-in user interface to use the features to create, Report, Update, and
Delete items from the Database.
The next question is if the user interface is accessible and if the vendor
doesn't know you will have to experiment and pick the best one.
If you will be creating your own user interface there are several free
database engines out there like SqLite, Firebird, MySql and Microsoft Access
or Sql Server for heavy databases and Sql Compact Edition for file-based
smaller databases and even some internet applications.
Note Sql Compact Edition is no longer supported by Microsoft but still runs
perfectly on the latest Windows Platforms and the actual DLL(s) for the
engine are freely available to include in a programming project.
I am not aware, didn't look, to see if there were any user interfaces built
off these databases similar to the Microsoft Access Platform so that is
something to check out when you start doing your homework.
Perhaps someone out there has used a DB in the way you want to use one and
can save you allot of time googling and contacting vendors.
It sounds like you want a DB that you can fire up and already has all the
built-in forms and dialogs so you can create a project in the DB Platform
itself with CRUD operations built-in via user interface dialogs and then
some other custom features like sorting, filtering and the like.
If someone on this or other lists has an idea of which one will fit your
needs that will save you allot of time and headaches trying to find one
when you are a nube to the subject at hand.
Good Hunting!

Hi Linette,

here is a link from my web page for NVDA 2016.2.
You can install this version and right away NVDA will say there is a newer
update, NVDA 2016.3, just hit ok and download that newer version and you are
off and running.
The synthesize voice is not the best, but if you own Kurzweil 1000 software
you can use the Eloquence or Paul, Kate, or James voices from that.

Voices for NVDA

2016-10-04 Thread Lloyd Rasmussen via Talk
The Nuance, DecTalk and Eloquence voices are tied to Window-Eyes, so you
won't be able to use them with NVDA. You can use the various SAPI or Speech
Framework synthesizers that come with Windows or that you had obtained
somewhere along the way. In Windows 7 I use the Zera Pro Microsoft Speech
Framework synthesizer with NVDA. In Windows 10 I use Microsoft David,
although I wasn't able to use the souped-up mobile version. Eloquence and
other synthesizers can be purchased to work with NVDA. Except for ESpeech,
the free synthesizers I have used are not quite as responsive to
single-character input as Eloquence or Vocalizer or DecTalk synthesizers, so
if you are going to seriously use NVDA you will probably want to invest in a
synthesizer. Responsiveness is quite adequate for general screen reading

You are completely forgetting NVDA which is a free option, and it's
actually a screenreader worth using. it's not a toy a couple people put
together, it actually works a lot better than a lot of folks think.

So, if Window-eyes does eventually stop being developed, there is
absolutely no reason why you can't download a free copy of NVDA and use
that.

Yes: paying customers do have certain rights, one of which to
complain.

I'm in that paying customer group, who subsidise the Window-eyes for
Office programme, and actually, as a paying customer, get less and less
of what I've paid for.

As our numbers diminish, so Window-eyes becomes less viable as a
distinctive, commercially driven product.

For those who say use NVDA - not for me - its braille support is
worse than Window-eyes. So - it may well be JFW which I reluctantly
purchase, or I stay with Window-Eyes the performance of which is now
lagging in a number of areas.

So VFO: talk to your paying customers.

You can install this version and right away NVDA will say there is a newer

off and running.
The synthesize voice is not the best, but if you own Kurzweil 1000 software
you can use the Eloquence or Paul, Kate, or James voices from that.

Window-eyes will run as a 30 minute demo. Also you can't take your purchased

Thank you Tom for being constructive as ever.

We must talk to people assuming that they are concerned about the
purpose of their product, rather than simply looking
for a means of maximising their revenue. Talking to the latter is
pointless, so let's at least assume that there is, in the policy of the
company, some distinction between something like access technology
and optional luxury products.

For example, whatever health care system we live under, we hope that
our doctor has some interest in curing us, rather than in merely
maximising his/her personal profit.

I personally think there has to be a sharp distinction
between getting paid well for doing something well, and making profit
for its own sake.

Re: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Dave via Talk
Hi rick,

not sure who you were speaking to, but it was me that has ran into the
Database barrier, and have yet to figure a way around it.

Over the years, I have attempted to use Access, and had little to no
success. I had more success in the early edition of Access than say in
the 2010 edition, which is the last version I have attempted to use.

There is Using a Database, which is easier to get working than actually
Creating a Database from Scratch. In the past, I needed to create a
Database from Scratch, as no one on staff was going to build it for me
etc. And I wasn't expecting them to do so.

At the time, we had two or three Databases, one for Customers, and
another for Bug Tracking. I forget what the third database was for, but
I rarely needed to get into it.

The Company always went the Cheap route, and was using some Freeware Bug
Tracking software, and Window Eyes, at the time, would not read anything.

The same Company had a Web Based Customer Base, and Window eyes would
read bits and pieces, but not enough for me to fill out the entire form.

When I speak with HR people, I will ask, or they will ask me about my
knowledge of what ever software they use. There seems to be a wide
variety of Customer tracking and Bug Tracking software out there, and I
have to tell them that No, I do not know any of those packages. And I
do not know if my Screen Reader will read enough in any of those
packages.

I have never been one to insist the Company change everything they do so
they can have the Privilege of hiring me. Ha Ha! I have always gone
into Jobs believing it was up to me to adjust to what ever system they
are already using.I do not play the Blind Card.

I ask about Databases about every two to three years just incase someone
has made a break through, using any Screen Reader. So far, JAWS seems
to read better than any others, but from what I've read, this too is
limited.

Back in the mid 90's, MS Windows 3.1 was the big OS at the time, and
Lotus was a big player in the Spread Sheet market. Lotus came out with
a Suite of programs, A Spread Sheet, a Word Processor, and a Database
called Approach. This one database worked great with Window Eyes at
the time. I could read and create what ever database I needed.

However, the Approach software was limited and you might say our
Department out grew its capabilities.

We then moved over to Access and I never could get Window Eyes to read
as well as it had in Approach.

Probably 10 years ago, I bought a newer version of Approach, installed it
and found they had changed the program so much that Window Eyes no
longer read much of anything.

About four years ago, I was able to try a copy of Alpha 5, which is a
fantastic database, probably the best I have seen. But, Window eyes
would read some things well and not read other things. Like, I might
be able to read Menus, but once a selection was chose, the Screen Reader
would not read anything on the screen. Here again, Bits and Pieces
getting read, but not enough to be able to use the software.

I probably should have learned to write Scripts, but frankly, I was Lazy,
and just didn't want to put in the effort it would take to learn how to
write good ones.

anyway, this is my story. Others working in Government offices have
told me they can use their Network Based Database with no problems.
This is good to hear, so there are some out there able to use a Screen
Reader with a Database.

I'll keep looking and perhaps I will stumble onto something that works
well enough.

Grumpy Dave

Re: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Dave via Talk
Hi Rick,

The answer is Yes, to all of those.

Actually, what I am running into is when I contact potential employers,
I do not recognize any of the Customer or Bug Tracking Software they use.
My last employer was so cheap he wouldn't spend any money for this kind
of thing, so myself and the other guys in the department used several
Freeware packages.

I rarely recognize any tracking software mentioned by potential
employers. So I have no idea if any Screen Reader will work, and
usually, the person I am speaking to is depending upon me to know, since
they don't get a lot of Blind applicants.
--

This then turns into a Stalemate situation as they don't know anything,
and I can not help them either. To show up with my copy of Window Eyes
and install it on their system, and go through all of the headakes that
usually come, I have yet to find an employer this patient, to take up
the time to see if my Screen Reader will work on their systems.

I am told to come back when I find out if my screen reader will work
with what ever software they are using. And so far, the answer is I
don't know, or No, or Kind of.

Not complaining here, but just stating what I've run into the very few
times I've actually had someone take an interest.

The last time was over a year ago.

I slacked off looking because it was like Spitting into the Wind. Then
in the last month or two, I am back to looking again, and the Database
question has come up again.

Perhaps I need to change the type of job I am looking for. Maybe I
should be a software Tester, or a Web Site tester when I grow up?

Hello, I own win-eyes 9.1, retail version. How much would it cost for me
to upgrade to the latest version? Also, if I purchase another SMA and
wineyes goes off the market, will I receive a prorated refund? Thanks
  very much.

Re: The future of Window-eyes

2016-10-04 Thread David via Talk
Of course, one consequence of all this uncertainty, is the app
development. Many app developers may feel reluctant to update and
maintain their apps, if tomorrow the whole app will be no longer useful,
due to the screen reader being discontinued. New apps may not be
developed, even if there does exist the needed expertise, causing users
not to have the optimal solutions in place. That way, the screen reader
will loose its stand, more people will leave it behind and find better
solutions otherwise, and eventually the product can be discontinued.

OK, so staff can reassure us all, the screen reader will be continued.
Yet, for how long? Nice that we recently have received updated versions,
and as such, the product is up-to-date by now. But further development -
both in the AISquared lab, and among the many app managers - might be
depending on further signals from the new owners. Investing a ton of
hours in developing something, releasing it and following up all user
feedback, could soon feel overwhelming, long as you do not know if
things will be useful in a few months.

Big issue is, that nothing man-made lasts forever. One day, maybe a
total new system will present itself, causing most of us to leap for
another screen reader. Not even sure if Jaws, ZoomText or even NVDA,
will be the next one to take over the market. Sometimes you wonder how
much longer Windows itself will be around.

In general, I am pleased with the Window-Eyes screen reader, for one
thing due to all the possibilities with easy-to-use and create apps.
Yet, I do realize that the recent development of the way things are
done, on the business side, makes us wonder what is going on. Very few
times, all this kind of one business swallowing the other, has proven to
be better for the customer. Not trying to be negative, but after all,
such merging takes ttime, energy and loads of economic resources. And
the end-result will often stand as a slimmed-down staff, that ends up
with so much products to handle, that there will be less specialized
advice to be had.

Hi Linette,

here is a link from my web page for NVDA 2016.2.

Well, we have Erick Dannery, vice president management for software, and we
have Glen Gordon who is the Cheef technology officer who is blind. We have Brad
Davis, Dan Clark, Dusty somebody, Bryan Carver, who is also blind, and a whole
lot of other people, and we also have Jonathan Mosen who produces the monthly

Does anyone know who the officers of VFO are. I did a search and only found the
CEO. I'd like to know what position Doug has now.

Hi Linette,

here is a link from my web page for NVDA 2016.2.

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi David:
That is a common problem and no database is going to help since the customer
has their own database managing the tracking or crm applications depending
on the vendor who provided their software.
They may have their own programming staff who created the software in-house
and if so they may be able to make it accessible.
Otherwise it is a matter of getting the names of their software packages and
researching them to find out if any are accessible and then look for jobs
using the accessible software.
The other alternative is to have a scriptor script whatever software is
being used, the State may pay for this via the Commission for the Blind or
something - not sure.
If the entity you want to work for is a Government or related contractor
they may need to, by law, make the software accessible or pick something
else but private companies are not, as far as I know, required to make a job
accessible unless the regulations have changed or I misunderstand them.
If it were me I would find 2 or 3 popular commercial packages and learn to
use them and, or, have them scripted so you can use them and then filter the
job hunt based on what you know - a bad choice but it might work.
The key here is to find some way of using the companys software or using
something that can tie into their software or even a stand-alon package that
the boss will approve of but then you wouldn't be tied into their crm or
tracking systems.
You might have the State create a black box against a stand-alone package
that ties into the companys systems, just some programming, but you would
need to have them hire a programmer, have the company agree to it and then
learn to use the new platform.
I am thinking that scripting an existing crm and, or, tracking platform
created in a popular venue would be the way to go since it is the most
common practice I believe.
You really need to keep a list of the software they are using and ask around
to see if any of it has already been scripted and then get prices for a pro,
like the WindowEyes staff, to script the most popular ones or the ones you
are most interested in.
That said, I think I would consider talking to the JAWS scripting staff
since the status of WindowEyes is in question lately and scripting a complex
crm system could be expensive for either you, if you get the job, or the
State if they will pay for the service.
Good Hunting!

Subject: Re: Data Bases

Grumpy Dave

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Again Dave:
I know a fellow who used Access, a recent version I think but don't hold me
to it, to convert a rather complicated Excel spreadsheet into the correct
format for Sql Server.
He created the Access Database, generated reports, imported, filtered and
sorted the excel data and stored the results in his Access Database. Then he
used the Access Database to convert into a Sql Server Database format - part
of his Degree Program at Liberty University.
He uses JAWS so I am not sure if he could have done all that with WindowEyes
but Access, one of the flavors, is indeed pretty accessible according to
him.
The only other thing I can think of is to hire someone to create a nice
database app for you - not too hard but time consuming.
If based off SqLite or another existing Database most of the really complex
work will already have been done and mainly just the user interface with all
the features you want need to be programmed.
If you want your own database this is one option if you cant find one out
there that suits your needs but this is likely going to be a costly option
me thinks.
Having a somewhat accessible piece of existing software scripted to tweak
the user interface to work with jaws or windoweyes might be less costely and
give you faster development and a lower cost.

Subject: Re: Data Bases

Hi rick,

not sure who you were speaking to, but it was me that has ran into the
Database barrier, and have yet to figure a way around it.

I'll keep looking and perhaps I will stumbl

RE: is window-eyes going away?

2016-10-04 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
Charllie: I think that is the ultimate question.

My own now long standing conclusion is that the signs do not look good.

If VFO can finance increasing the profile of JFW, with advanced notice of what
to expect, the same can happen for Window-Eyes.

I think it safe to assume that if VFO senior leadership is Freedom Scientific
stacked, Window-eyes development will cease. Existing copies will function,
until Windows and other applications change such that Window-Eyes can no longer
manage the interface for them.

This is my strongly held personal view - if these discussions get filtered up
to John Blake et al, someone with authority to speak to us should show some
leadership and tell us to stop the speculation or alternatively say - the
current release is the last. Vfo could turn Window-Eyes into a free
alternative to NVDA, and open it up for interested others to develop. Or they
could do exactly what they are doing for JFW: tell us what to look forward to.

Best.

Vaughan.

2016-10-04 Thread Chris Skarstad via Talk
In short the answer is no, not yet. it may go away, it may not. Nobody
knows, maybe the AI Squared staff don't even know. Speculating only
causes fear, uncertainty, and doubt. and over the last few days there's
been loads of it on this list. Nobody can control this, folks. Sending
50 emails a day worrying about Window-eyes going away isn't going to
change what happens eventually. Stop worrying about stuff nobody can
control and just enjoy Window-eyes as it is now.

You are right, no one knows, well maybe the shadow knows. As long as
microsoft makes it available free with office, that is a plus. However, a
couple thoughts. Here we have a company that now has two screen readers.
Reader w is less expensive, and at least in the u.s., not copy protected.
It also uses a different scripting language. Reader j costs more, and is
copy protected and restricted on how many installs you can do. Reader j
also has a much larger part of the market. Can you think of a logical
reason they would continue to develop both products which do the same
thing? Hopefully, they'll care enough to take some of the best features
of reader w and include in their own, reader j. If they discontinue one,
which do you think it will be? Speculation, perhaps, also I think
logical. All I can tell you is, I won't bother with jaws.

Thanks to Rick and Others

2016-10-04 Thread Dave via Talk
Hi rick,

Thanks for the great list of the process I would need to do in order to
land one of these jobs.

My own estimation is not quite as long as yours, but was very similar.

I had made up my mind there was No Way in Hell I was going to involve
the State Agency for the Blind. This makes my task list a bit
shorter.

I have my reasons, most of them Good Reasons. My experience with our
State Agency is if you want to have something get turned inside out and
end up ASS Backwards, go through our State Agency for the Blind.Plus
it takes about 12 months to get something done which should take no more
than three weeks.

My Age is coming into play as I am applying for work. Most of these
jobs are held by younger people and for a good reason. They will work
for less and their minds are still quick and flexible. Mine is not as
Sharp as it was when I was 35 years younger.I'm not stupid, and I am
wiser than most younger people, but learning New stuff does not come as
easy these days.

I am thinking I may need to look for other types of work, something
where the focus is not on Programming or Testing Software.

What that might be, I am still attempting to figure out. Where do older
Software guys go when they know a fair amount about mostly out of date
stuff?

I did have a Highlight while looking for work. For a short time, I had
this guy, paid by a government grant, who was to be a Specialist in
finding work for those who have Handicaps.Any sort of Handicap.

As it turned out, he had only had his job for about 10 months, and his
job was going away in just a few more months when his Grant would run
out of money.

He did send me for an interview, where I would be testing those Cars
that are to drive themselves.

As I was reading through the requirements for the job, one of the very
first requirements was that I had to have an up to date Drivers License,
and that I could Drive.

My task would have been if I had a valid drivers license was to sit
behind the wheel and when the car's navigation system made a mistake, I
was to correct the error by slowing down, turning the wheel to avoid an
obstacle, or to bring the car to a stop.

Now I am quite interested in this kind of thing, so the type of job
would have attracted me.

But, I had to laugh since this guy is to be this Specialist in placing
someone with a Physical limitation. Guess he forgot I was totally blind.

But, I had a good laugh about it. Other than that one little thing,
called a Valid Drivers License, I might still be testing those Self
Navigating Cars.

Thanks again,

Grumpy Dave

Thunderbird -- setting up a group message

2016-10-04 Thread Donald L. Roberts via Talk

Hello, ,

I want to set up a group mailing list for perhaps eight persons. I
can't figure out how to do this in Thunderbird. I went to the address
book list, hit alt n, named the list book club, tabbed past description
to the edit box and entered a name in my address book. But where do I
go from here? I tried following the name with a comma and a space after
which I repeated this procedure with five or six other names in my
address book. Still only the first name listed shows. What am I missing?

On a related topic, has anyone come up with a viable solution to the
problem of repetition of the subject line during the reading of a
message in Thunderbird? Frankly, although I haven't tested extensively,
this is not unique to Window-eyes. What do the rest of you think?

Not sure if this applies, but hit enter instead of space or coma, once
you hear the first name repeated.

Hi Gary. You can't use the voices for nvda that you bought with Window-eyes,
but NVDA has Eloquence, DECtalk, vocalizer, etc, as addons. It also is
portible and you can take it anywhere you want without installing video
intercept drivers.

You are completely forgetting NVDA which is a free option, and it's actually
a screenreader worth using. it's not a toy a couple people put together, it
actually works a lot better than a lot of folks think.

So, if Window-eyes does eventually stop being developed, there is
absolutely no reason why you can't download a free copy of NVDA and use
that.
