Re: Jaws and desktop

2017-05-25 Thread Neville via Talk

Net Bat, I am using W10 Home with all updates.

Alt tab does nothing as regards bringing back the speech when returning
to the Desktop. Maybe I have been spoiled by years of WE because it
always automatically gave focus to the Desktop after leaving a programme.

Hi,
Just authorized the latest copy of Jaws and very much a learner.

When exiting a programme, say Thundrbird, or exiting a drive for the
Desktop, ,after pressing alt F4 Jaws goes quiet. The pressing of Windows
d once or twice is required to place focus back on the Desktop.

Is this annoying behaviour normal for Jaws or do I need to change some
setting somewhere? If so, which setting and where?

Thanks
Neville.

Hi,
In JAWS settings, Insert+6 on the top numbers row, you can make the insert key
a sticky key. I would search for insert key, and the setting that you can check
will probably be there. You can do this with JAWS so the Insert is not a sticky
key on your computer for all programs like it would be if you went to ease of
access and did it there. I love that, because I can press Insert key, let up
off of that, and press other keys, and it works just like I held it down.
I hope you find that setting in the settings center of JAWS!
Have a great one!

Thanks, do you think that will work more effectively than the Caps Lock
Key? It's going to be a while before I migrate, so perhaps I should ask
these questions should they become necessary. Based on the tutorials, I
tend not to use most of the key strokes involving the insert key.

Re: Eloquence pitch in jaws?

2017-05-25 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
Yes, this can be done. My instructions may not be the best, but I think
you can figure it out since you have already been in the Jaws options
and found the voice settings. From within the voices setting, choose
voice adjustment.
Press alt-v to get to the combo box where you choose which cursor you
want to modify.
you will get to an option where you can down arrow through options for
default cursor, PC cursor, Jaws cursor, etc.
You can not have the option set to default. After choosing the cursor
you want to set, tab until you find the pitch setting. This is the next
tab after the punctuation setting.

You change it with the arrow keys.
Once you have it set, tab to save as and give it a name, something you
will recognize, like Glen pitch 44 and press enter on OK.
You will be asked if you want to set this for the default. Enter on yes
or OK, I forgot what it is called at this point.

Now, you will have access to that voice whenever you want to use it.

Hi,
A few days ago I installed the then current version of Jaws to try it
out while waiting for my registration code. Which still has not arrived.

My question concerns the installation of the latest Jaws version
released in the past few days.

Will the latest version install over the previous version in the same
folder or will it install in a new folder? My question relates to being
able to have more than one version of Jaws installed on a system at the
same time.

   Thanks
Neville.

Well, there are still people using Window-eyes, so yes,
actually that could help people who may have had a particular problem
that that update might fix. I'm glad to see a little development going
on even if it

 is in the short term.

The F8 key for starting to select what you want to copy is a Window Eyes
command and not a Jaws command.

Maybe this is because I am running Windows 7, but my copy method with
Jaws is the same as it used to be in Window-Eyes before we started using
the f8 method.

For example, I find the beginning of the text I wans and press the shift
key. By arrowing down, I copy lines of text at a time. By adding in
the control, I can now move down by paragraphs or by page if I use the
page down button with the shift key. These are the keystrokes that are
still available in NotePad.

Hi.
remember, no one is saying you have to stop using Window-eyes. If it works,
keep right on using it as long as you can! I also have JAWS once again on
this machine but very rarely do I ever use it. it's there if I ever need it.
Window-eyes is going to be my primary screenreader until it doesn't work

I tell you, the Window-Eyes method for copying text is less cumbersome.
Only three keystrokes to worry about: F8 to start, F8 to end, Alt-C to copy
to Clipboard.

For Jaws, Ctrl-Windows-K, then Insert-Space, then M, last, Ctrl-C to finally
copy to clipboard. I wonder why Jaws can't keep almost anything simple?

Hi,
Here is what you want to do with JAWS. First, press Windows+CTRL+K to set a
temperary place marker. Then, arrow to the end of what you want to select.
Then, Press Insert+Space bar, and press the letter M for marker. When you do
that, all of the text between the place marker and your mark is selected. Then,
just press CTRL+C to copy, then you can paste it anywhere.
Take care,

The sticky key function of the Insert key is a global setting, which can only
be toggled on by first switching to global settings, namely, by pressing
Control-Shift-D in the Settings Center.
The actual name of the setting you're looking for is Insert key mode.

Hi,
In JAWS settings, Insert+6 on the top numbers row, you can make the insert key
a sticky key.

Re: SMA''s

2017-05-25 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk

Hi,

When I made my purchase, they verified that I had two SMA's at
GW-Micro. The very nice lady informed me that they had transferred to
my Jaws purchase. She also explained that it would show that I have one
SMA. This is because VFO sells two at one time. So, when you purchase
one SMA from them, you get two upgrades. These come usually around the
end of October. Updates count as a free software patch. So, If you
only had one SMA, you will only be entitled to one upgrade. I am not
quite sure how this shows on the purchase order, but I am sure there
will be some information about it. Mine was written directly into the
email, so I did not need to read some pdf file or other attachment.

suppose to get any further info? Also, I barely received my
Authorization code after calling them today, Gwmicro migration had my
correct email address, but VFO had an old email address from when I
purchased open book. If anyone can answer my question on the SMA I'd
appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: Jaws and copy text question

2017-05-25 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
Maybe this is because I am running Windows 7, but my copy method with
Jaws is the same as it used to be in Window-Eyes before we started using
the f8 method.

For example, I find the beginning of the text I wans and press the shift
key. By arrowing down, I copy lines of text at a time. By adding in
the control, I can now move down by paragraphs or by page if I use the
page down button with the shift key. These are the keystrokes that are
still available in NotePad.

You certainly can use both insert keys as well as the caps lock key. You have
everything you have in desktop layout, plus the caps lock, and a lot of extra
commands that are much easier to do from the keyboard.

Hi Brenda,

I'm not Raul, but I can answer your questions. Yes, you are using the
laptop layout. No, you can not use the insert keys as modifiers. I
presume they will still work as insert-typeover toggles. The keypad can
still be used, but you use the capslock key instead of the insert key to
get the same keystrokes.

If you do a lot with numbers, turning the numlock on for the keypad will
give you access to numbers without having to use the number row.
Turning it off allows access to mouse click keys. I benefit from this
because I an not a very good numeral inputter, grin.

2017-05-25 Thread David Moore via Talk
Hi,
In JAWS settings, Insert+6 on the top numbers row, you can make the insert key
a sticky key.

Someone mentioned treating the insert key as a "sticky Key." I
understand the concept of sticky keys (I use them all the time) but how
do I employ that in the context of the insert key, unless you mean
simply using the caps lock?

2017-05-25 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk

hi raul,
Apparently, I must have some strange quirk with my keyboard. I have
pressed the capslock key as quickly as I possibly could. It absolutely
will not switch the setting. However, using alt-capslock does work, so
as long as it does, I will use it. The only time I have any difficulty
at all is when I want to use the f1 through f4 keys. That reach is a
bit awkward for me. I have been trying to practice and I think it
should be possible eventually. I might need to start exercising my
little left-hand pinky, though, grin. Thank you for your help.

I doubt that it should make any difference, but my keyboard is one of
those wireless ones with a little USB things put out by Dell. The PC is
about 7-1/2 years old and is running Windows 7, 64-bit Windows. Both
Dell and Windows have indicated to me that I should not update to
Windows 10 on this system because it will not support it. I do see a
new computer in my future, but I hope it is not too soon.

Someone mentioned treating the insert key as a "sticky Key." I

2017-05-25 Thread Brenda via Talk
I may have missed the initial message or got confused with the various
replies.

In order to use caps lock as the Jaws key do you have to turn laptop
mode on?

Once laptop mode is on, can you still use the insert as the Jaws key and
the numpad for navigation?

If true, it seems like laptop mode is more versitile than desktop mode.

If not, what do I have to do to have the caps lock and insert key both
funcgtion as the Jaws key?

Thanks

The only limitation you will find with Window-Eyes is in Windows 10 when new

incompatibility issues may begin but if you don't choose to install Office

always have.

Hi.
remember, no one is saying you have to stop using Window-eyes. If it
works, keep right on using it as long as you can! I also have JAWS once

Fortunately, my husband revived my Window7 machine and Window-eyes

RE: End of Life Message

2017-05-25 Thread Amanda Lee via Talk
I don't like to chime in with 'me too' messages. However I reluctantly
bought into the migration. I still wish I could purchase the upgrades to
and want a standalone V9.5.4 of Window-Eyes as I will continue to use it
until it will no longer function. I still find Window-Eyes to be faster to
respond amongst other aspects. I use JAWS at work and it can be tedious.

The only limitation you will find with Window-Eyes is in Windows 10 when new
functionality after this point is implemented. Still, Window-Eyes won't
just stop working. For example, when Office 2017 or later emerges, then
incompatibility issues may begin but if you don't choose to install Office
greater than Office 2016, then you can continue to use Window-Eyes as you
always have.

Hi.
remember, no one is saying you have to stop using Window-eyes. If it
works, keep right on using it as long as you can! I also have JAWS once
again on this machine but very rarely do I ever use it. it's there if I
ever need it. Window-eyes is going to be my primary screenreader until
it doesn't work anymore.

Hey Lee,

Just to be safe if you have the license number and authorization code, I
would download and install Jaws but just don't use it. VFO phone support
can say otherwise, but the info might not be correct. If it is on your
computer and registered you will be in the system.

I ran into the same problem you did. The first message read without a hitch
but that was it. I couldn't get WE to read the next or subsequent messages.
The rest of the program is, as you say, pretty accessible but it's no good
if you can't read messages. I gave it up as a bad job in the end and went
to Outlook 2016.
Sorry not to be more helpful.

Cheers,

The reason why those links didn't work because the last part of each
one was on a separate line, so you were trying to activate a partial
link.

The list is in JAWS Help. Go to the JAWS Control panel by pressing
insert-j and then press alt-h to get to the help menu. If you arrow
down a few times you will get to an item that says something like
"keyboard commands", press the Enter key and you will be presented

Re: WE with Win 10 Mail

2017-05-25 Thread Ian Westerland via Talk

Hi Ramona. I tried the program but couldn't get passed the "Add
Account" button. From there on, nothing spoke using curser keys, or the
numeric key pad so unless there's a trick I don't know, it doesn't seem
to work.

I have the latest version of WE.

My priority email program is ThunderBird and that does what I want.

Sorry for the bad news.

Regards

Ian Westerland

Hi,

My Name is Ramona mandy. I am new to this list and this is my first post. So
please excuse me if this topic has already been discussed.

Does anyone have any experience with using WE with the Windows 10 Mail app and
can advise on accessibility or otherwise?

I am running WE 9.5.4.

I find that when I first launch Mail and Enter on the first message I select,
WE will read it fine and I can navigate and hear the text by moving up or down
arrow.

However, if I then close that message with escape or delete it with CTRL+D,
then open another message, if I arrow up or down, it just says blank. WE also
does not read it at all when I open it.

In this case, if I turn off browse mode and tab, I sometimes find a link to
download message and pictures which is odd because I thought the message would
already be downloaded. I enter on this and then sometimes I can launch browse
mode and read the message, but once again, not always.

Sometimes, if the message is presenting as blank, I can turn off browse mode
and will find a link by tabbing to read the message in a web browser which then
works, but I don't want to have to always read my messages by opening them in
IE.

I find the rest of the program is reasonably accessible such as tabbing to
buttons. It is this reading problem that I am interested to hear how others
have found it.

Thanks
Ramona

Re: Jaws installing latest version

2017-05-25 Thread Chris G via Talk

Hi,
It will install over JAWS 18.

When they say having multiple versions of JAWS installed, they say 16,
17, 18, not the patches.

Subject: Jaws installing latest version

Hi,
A few days ago I installed the then current version of Jaws to try it
out while waiting for my registration code. Which still has not arrived.

My question concerns the installation of the latest Jaws version
released in the past few days.

Will the latest version install over the previous version in the same
folder or will it install in a new folder? My question relates to being
able to have more than one version of Jaws installed on a system at the
same time.

  Thanks
Neville.

Hi,

There is an sort of top / bottom index indication. I was searching for
the same and I found an option.
In the quick settings menu [ins-v] arrow down and press t until you have
the option:
top and bottom edge alert
with space bar you can toggle between sound and silence. Silence is the
default.

In the quick settings menu, you can also fill in the word: top
and press arrow down.

I haven't installed JAWS yet. But I assume the problem is that JAWS does
not possess the elegant code Window-Eyes does to determine the logical
status bar when there is no actual status bar, which is the case on the
desktop and in Thunderbird.
Obviously there's no status bar on the desktop. But in Thunderbird there
is a window that looks and acts like a status bar, but it is not
(technically speaking) a true status bar.
It's a good example of the never-ending uphill battle screen-reader
developers face. Windows has a specific status bar window that can be
created and yet it is not uncommon for developers to just tack on
another standard window that accomplishes the same purpose visually.

Tom
