RE: Jaws start up

2017-07-27 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi Dave:

One more thing:

Do you have a shortcut key set up for the JAWS shortcut on the desktop? This
way, if your computer is running and you don’t have JAWS running, you can still
press the shortcut key to start jaws back up.

Hi all,

Well believe it or not I downloadede jaws at 1:15pm today and had my
authorization shortly after 3pm.
So far things are going fairly well for me except for one issue.
For some reason when I installed I set start up at the log in screen. But a
couple of times when I shutdown my computer then came back and turned on my
computer Jaws did not start so I had to have a sighted person help me locate
the desktop icon so I could press enter to start jaws.

I am still trying to learn the menus of Jaws which is frustrating and I can
not find where the start up options are located so I can double check things
to make sure I have it set up properly and if not to set start up like I
want it.

Thanks for any help it is appreciated. Dave

Hi all,

Well I finally swallowed the lump in my throat and downloaded Jaws today. I
have to say and to some point I hate to admit it but I find Jaws pretty good
for a beginner. I got almost everything set up like I want but the only
thing I can't find how to do is to get Jaws to stop reading all the
punctuation and only telling me the letter and number key strokes instead of
every key stroke.

If someone can give me a little guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

I, too, am a Window-eyes hold out. I plan to stick with WE for as long as
it works, and am going to explore my options for when I have to make the
switch. It will not be to Jaws.

I have been a GW Micro customer since the days of Vocal-eyes. When I
decided to go with a Windows computer, back in the 90's, I tried both Jaws
and Window-eyes. Window-eyes was far superior. My husband and I had a
business at that time, and Rehab was involved in helping to make things
accessible for me. Although they were really pushing Jaws, I insisted on
Window-eyes, and they came through for me. Rehab really didn't have much to
offer in the way of training, but The Window-eyes support was excellent.

When you stop and think about how many years Doug and Dan have invested in
GW Micro, retirement probably was a consideration. It's just too bad things
had to end the way they did. I was really hoping that with the Window-eyes
for Office offering, Microsoft would end up with WE, and would hire WE staff
to work for them. I really sensed that there were going to be big changes
when that offering was made.

As someone who used GW Micro products from the very beginning, at least
since in 1990, I miss WE already. It's a shame. Seems like perhaps Doug and
Dan were deceived by AI Squared. Just my opinion. Could be completely wrong.
It's appalling that Doug didn't have any say on whether AI Squared merged or
was bought out by VFO. That left us to be devoured by the shark. Anyway, I
just wanted to express that.

What's the NVDA list? How and where do I subscribe? I need help with that

While it might not hurt to take the JAWS offer, no one should be made to
feel foolish for not doing it, regardless of one's own opinion. Whether to
switch to JAWS or not is Butch's prerogative.

Personally, I could not take advantage of the offer due to my version of WE
being out of date. Voc Rehab came through for me, only because I'm in a job
search and told them WE was going away, and I needed JAWS in the job search,
so my counselor was able to justify the expense. Now, I've just got to see
if they can get the registration in my name, as, right now, it's registered
to the Rehab agency, since that was what was on the P.O.

Now, I've got both on here, and can switch at will between Window-Eyes,
JAWS, NVDA or Narrator.

It's good to have choice, but, that is what choice is all about.

Window-Eyes Sounds

2017-07-27 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
It may depend upon the version of Windows, but Window-Eyes sounds are in the
Sound Schemes in Control Panel. It is easy to miss them. If you arrow down
through the list of Windows sounds, you will find other software sounds as
well.

In Windows 10, it is possible to set the volume of the sounds for particular
software packages including, I believe, muting them. It is worth looking
for Window-Eyes sounds when Window-Eyes is running to see if that could be
the problem. Unfortunately, it is hard to give exact steps as there are
some variations depending upon which version of Windows is being used. I
type volume into the cortana edit box and get "Adjust System Volume as a
result. Right now, I am running JAWS and I see JAWS sounds there. Yes,
some of us have to switch to JAWS because Window-Eyes and JAWS works with
some of my employer's software that does not work with NVDA or Narrator.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I got what I think was a similar issue with my lenovo laptop in 2015
after I first purchased it. After speaking with Steven Clower, or maybe
it was Chris, I now start Window-eyes after the laptop boots and I'm at
the desktop.

Can't tell you if I've had the problem since as I don't use the laptop
much, but starting w-e manually seems to work.

I've been in the Windows 10 insider preview program almost since its
inception. Window-eyes has not worked for me using the past four insider
previews, including the latest creator edition. I get video driver error
tones upon launching Window-eyes, and many programs containing cursor and
text on the screen are no longer read with the Window-eyes curso or mouse
pointer.
Believe me, I was one of the most reluctant Jaws migrants. But upon
experiencing this Window-eyes behavior, and knowing it would never be
addressed with Window-eyes no longer in development, I had to keep
working. All of you who think Window-eyes will work indefinitely in
Windows 10 have obviously not yet encountered the insider previews or most

RE: been a great ride

2017-07-27 Thread Karen Poulakos via Talk

I need help with that
screen reader. Thanks as always,
