Re: makeing the switch

2017-04-04 Thread Andy Baracco via Talk
i have heard and read this argument before. It may have held some water in
the past, but not today. For one thing, most of us already have a computer,
and have likely already paid for a screen reader, or had one purchased for
them. So that savings that would come from buying the Mac does not apply.
Also, today we have a free screen reader available in NVDA. I replaced a
computer in 2012, and again this year. In both instances I considered a Mac,
but in both instances when I did the math, it came out the same. I would be
spending double to get a Mac with the same specs as a Windows machine that
would be to my liking. Even a Mac Mini with decent specs would run me almost
$1200.
Also, i have read that Apple's development of Voiceover for the Mac has been
lagging over the last few years, and many who switch to the Mac find that
they either have to also maintain a Windows PC for some tasks, or they have
to install Windows on their Mac and either run a dual boot system or run
Windows under a virtual machine. Also, if, like me, you have large amounts
of data stored on external hard drives that have been formatted under
Windows, you will not be able to transfer files to and from those devices
with your Mac, thus again having to maintain another windows machine or
running Windows on your Mac.

So i again purchased a Windows PC.

The only thing that keeps me from switching is the expense of a mac and I

its the big expense with Macs that does not make it easier to switch for

Well, I guess I’ve fought it for as long as I can. I’ve refused for
several years to consider switching to a Mac, but with the apparent
demise of Window Eyes, and Jaws sucking as it always has, I’m going to be
making the switch. I’ve been a loyal WE user since 2004, but it seems
that it’s time to teach an old dog new tricks. lol. I can take my I phone
or my I pad mini and have no problem using programs like Netflix, Slink,
and other websites using Voice Over, that WE and Jaws say hey can’t
because the sites aren’t accessible. I think I’ll keep one of my Windows
PC’s with WE on it just so I can look back and think of all the money I
spent just to be left with my thumb up my nose. When I think of the money
I’ve spent maintaining a screen reader, and now the built in screen
reader with the IOS works great with all those websites that were called
by tech support for Jaws and window eyes “inaccessible”.. I know I may
catch some flack for this, but it’s the truth none the less.I guess VFO
thinks they’ve cornered the market on Screen readers, but I refuse to do
business with them, because of who they are and who they are connected
with. I started out with Windows 95 and JFW back in 1995, and I used Jaws
up untill 2004 when a friend of mine and myself started building a web
site, he was a WE user and I a Jaws user. I couldn’t do some of the thing
with jaws and Freedom Scientific’s tech support told me it was because
the page builder I was usin was “inaccessible”, but my buddy with Window
eyes could do it. I started using WE to work on the website and as I got
used to it I began using is more and more for other things. I found that

I don't recall ever getting this message before and I am pretty sure it is

I agree, things should have worked differently. I have seen this kind of
behavior once in a while. One workaround is as follows.

1. Go to the Edit Box, and turn off the Browse Mode.

2. Mark all the text, and copy it to the clipboard.

3. Hit Ctrl-A, then Del, to delete the text from the editbox.

4. Open things like Notepad, and paste in your copied text.

5. Do your editting, and then copy all back to the clipboard.

6. Go back to the Editbox, with browse mode still turned off, and paste
in your etxt.

Like I said, it is a workaround - though a rather long way around a
simple bush. Things really should not have to be that way, and I don't
have a good answer on why they are.

I know how to turn browse mode on and off. The problem is that, when

this happens, for whatever reason, the edit box goes silent, and normal
reviewing with the arrow keys produces only silence. The whole box
reads with browse mode turned on, but it obviously can't be edited. So
far, the only way I've found to make the box speak when browse mode is
off is to close and reopen W-E.
I hope that's clearer.

Subject: Twitter client

Hello all,

I'm looking for a twitter client that works well with Window-Eyes and has
been tested and works on Windows 10. I currently use chicken nugget which I
don't believe was tested under Windows 10; and quite frankly my husband
doesn't think so either.

I've heard people talk about TW Blue. Does this work under Windows 10? How
easy is it to use?

I just installed the 9.5.1 update on my asus machine and this is the machine
that I run my twitter client on.

Thanks.

I think that eventually advanced screen reader capability will be

Norton is a different type of thing. I mean, just the fact
that they had to produce a special tool to remove their software shows
how bad it is. Any good software developer should make it easy for the
user to uninstall the program, and leave no traces of the program
behind, you know just in case they might just wanna change their mind
and put the program back on. Also, this captcha thing...don't even get
me started. If they're going to protect their instalation with one,
offer an alternative. i guess the people at Norton don't think blind
people can use computers independently. I shouldn't have to ask for
sighted help. Actually, the program shouldn't have even been downloaded
and installed onto my pc in the first place, but we won't go there.

Hi Chris,

My gut tells me to do a system restore back to the time just after Norton
was installed, and proceed to uninstall it then.
This wayk, you have a full installation of Norton to work with.
Another choice, if you don't like the system restore idea, is to install
Norton again from the web, again, with the goal of having a full
installation.
Of course, the removal tool should work just fine, and I've used it
myself,

since it is very powerful.
However, my advice comes from my experience of the bad old days when it
was

necessary to ensure a program was fully installed before you were able to
uninstall it successfully.
As for your Winamp playlist editor problem, I'd be happy to talk with you
via Skype or telephone, if you'd like help.
Simply write to me off list.

Best,

Rod

Hey Chris

I have another idea that I might investigate as well. I have a sighted
friend who might be willing to do a remote session with me and he may be
able to read the captcha that way. I hate when these programs download
this

extra stuff you don't want or need. To me, it should be a hell of a lot
easier to uninstall these programs. If norton insists on having a captcha
built into their installer, it should have an audio challenge button so
that

blind people can listen, and get the job done a whole lot faster. It's
embarassing enough to ask for help, let alone having downloaded something
you didn't even need to. Outside of that, I have to say this new system is
running very nicely! Window-eyes is still not reading a few things like
some text areas, and the Winamp playlist editor still remains to be
silent,

but I have people looking into that.
Thanks!

I don't currently have the plugin but I can get it for sure. I don't
believe that would work though, because remember, Firefox has to be
running and in focus for the plugin to do its work, so I don't know if
that would do the job.

The removal tool is a separate program that you download and run
completely separate from Firefox.

Hi folks

Well, I've gotten myself in quite a bind here, and I don't quite know
what to do next. A few nights ago, I downloaded a program that had
other software bundled with it, and one of the programs was Norton
Internet security, this is of course a trial version. I didn't want it
on my system so I ran a little program I use called Revo Uninstaller.
Most times, it can remove programs and go a bit deeper and remove some
registry entries and other files left over, without being destructive to
other programs. With some programs, though, it has to run the program's
original installer. Can you guys see where this is going? I was somehow
able to get the program to uninstall from my system, but not completely
though. Unfortunately there are no entries for it in the listing for
programs and features, and after Revo Uninstaller ran and did the best
job it could, unfortunately, it removed the entry for Norton Internet
security. I looked in c:\program files\(x86)

and found the following folders. Norton Internet security, and
Norton Installer. I looked inside the folders, especially norton
installer thinking there was a way to uninstall it from there, but no
dice. So I dit a bit of research and found out that Norton has a
removal tool. I downloaded it and ran it and agreed to the license
agreement, but when I got to the next screen, ...I was greeted with a
security check screen with a captcha that I absolutely, positively can
not solve no matter what. Does anyone have any idea about how I can
figure out how to get past this captcha in some way, or am I going to
have to rely on a pare of working eyes to get past this? Alternatively,
do you guys think it would be safe for me to delete the 2 folders in
question? I did a bit of checking and it looks as if Norton, in its
infinite wissdom has disabled Windows defender, and there's no way to
re-enable it until I can get Norton off my system. Like I say, I never
actually meant to download the program but it came bundled with
something else and I've no idea how to rid myself of it. I don't want to
do anything destructive, as this is a brand new machine running
Windows 10. Hopefully, one of you guys will have some answers.

Thanks!

I have to say I feel kind of embarassed about this one.

Chris

Personally, I see no problem using the ribbons in Microsoft products. The
ribbons are not going anywhere. However, I do think, that if necessary a
virtual ribbon menu should be an option, it should not be by default.

That feature is called Virtual ribbons. What Virtual ribbons does is
it makes the ribbons in Microsoft office 2007 upwards into a menu bar.
That is a feature that every screen reader should have. Window-Eyes
should have a virtual ribbons like feature.

This is the third time I have hidden it.
It put the Get Windows 10 icon in my systray.
Once I uninstalled it the icon is gone again.

The main concern for me is that I have an older computer with older

I just can't figure out why so many are afraid of Windows 10. You can
update to windows 10 for free until July 17 of this year. After that,
it will cost $100.00. Windows 10 is much faster and more secure that
Windows 7 and easier to use and faster than windows 8 and 8.1.

I am retiring.

My career in the Assistive Technology industry started in the late 80's,
working for Computer Aids Corp. for a couple years, where I met Doug
Geoffray. Then I partnered with Doug to launch GW Micro in 1990 which
operated for 24 years, followed by our merging into Ai Squared in 2014. So
now, after almost 28 years in the AT industry, it's time for me to take a
break. I will be retired from Ai Squared after this week. No worries - the
rest of the Fort Wayne office and staff will continue as normal - whatever
normal means .

I'm not very active on this list but I look at many of the posts and I know
many of your names even if we rarely talk on the phone or meet in person. I
will continue to support Ai Squared and if the opportunity presents itself
who knows - I might come back for a few special projects from time to time.
Thank you very much for your support and friendship.

One thing I understand - this industry is very different from all others.
The people I know not only want to stay active, employed or stay in business
but they also want to make the world a better place by providing quality
products and services. You should all be proud of whatever contribution you
personally make.

Thank you all again for your friendship and loyalty over the many years.

Take care,
