Re: Has anyone ever considered using the Apple Mac?

Hi,

I haave been using apple mac os for several years and I find it to be
very stable.  I started with a mac mini and now I use a imac from 2013
and it still works.  I think you should be find if you can afford it of
corse as they are really expensive.  HTH.

Hi all,

I don't know about you, but I am just getting tired of it and want a

Windows programs and Windows updates. I am tired of wondering, worrying and
waiting for the next change and inevitable scramble to keep up by the blind
in the computer world.

So now, I am considering taking a leap of what ever you care to call it and
try using an Apple laptop, specifically, the Mac Book Air. I know there is a
steep learning curve, but I must say that there is a lot of support
available.

For example, every Apple store is supposed to have on site training on all
Apple devices for people with disabilities, including blind people. I know
that the store here in Louisville has such training.

The Apple Care for people with disabilities is available over the phone 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. That is more than there regular Apple Care.

The Apple Mac has a built in screen reader with different voices at no extra
cost installed on each device they make. There is also a short tutorial for
how to use Voice Over, the Apple voice and it's software, also at no extra
cost, included on each device.

I know that it has nothing to do with how it works, but the outer case of
the laptop is metal and has an apple, complete with 2 leaves and a bite
taken from the apple, as the logo which I can touch easily.

Has anyone else thought about using, or has used an Apple mac laptop? If so
what did or do you think about the Mac?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hello,
I have been having this problem with outlook for a while now.
When I go to set up mail accounts, the first progress window comes up
telling me that the program is connecting and trying to get the information
from the server.
Then not long afterword's, a window that just simply says, "Microsoft
outlook Credentials, (not Responding) comes up. I just reinstalled windows
10, cleanly, and that was the reason why I did a clean install.
Any ideas on how to fix it?
Thanks,

Here is the direct link to download jfw.
www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws. From there you just select either
32 or 64 bit depending on what you have. As far as rather or not you have
home or pro or not is based on your authorization not the installer. Aklso,
if you have the tandem build you will have access to auto update as well as
the ability to give access to your machine to fs if need be. HTH.

I have been a jaws user for years off and on. I have had a lisonce since
3.7 and have watched jaws go through several changes. If you wish you can
join the jaws users list at www.jaws-users.com. I think eric dammery is on
that list so you should have no trouble getting help there if need be.

Hi everyone,

Well as always I have not yet migrated to JFW. I always like to wait awhile
for people to get a new update or new screen reader before I will give it a
try. I used to always do this with WE also because ther are numerous bugs
to be worked and so I wait until it is all in good working order.

Anyway, I am going to finally download JFW today. I am absolutely terrified
since I had tried JFW before when I called them and they sent me a demo CD
to give it a try. I absolutely hated it and totally forgot about JFW and
continued with WE. d

Now I have saved a lot of the tips in a folder that has been shared on this
sight but one thing I did not save or accidently deleted is how to go about
the JFW download.

I have the link for the migration saved on IE so I am ready there.
What I am wondering is do I have to turn WE off to do the download or
can I leave it on to help me make the choices I need to make while
downloading JFW? I also have heard of different types of downloads like
home, professional, tandem. Which is the best to use. I assume it will be
home since I only have a home computer and do email, things on the web and
use Microsoft word. If I understand I should go tandem that way I can give
FO access to my computer if I run into problems.

Any help for the behind the times user would be greatly appreciated. Please
also keep your fingers crossed I do not throw the computer out the window if
things go haywire.

I need some clarification on this. I understand that the software is
exactly the same as one is using the same files. So, for paying the $80

Even though I am a home user using screen readers strictly for personal use,
I have no objection in paying the extra $80 if it gives me something in
return.
Can someone clarify?

You get 1 authorization code. You can install on up to 3 machines. After

to check with them and see as you would want pro at that point,.

Hello Olusegun,

At no point in my statement did I attack freedom of expression, only if the
signature was appropriate for this list. I, too, fully believe that freedom
of expression is a human right which should not be denied to anyone.

In the UK it is apparent from our own news channels, the various US news
media that we have access to and Americans I know very well that there is
still a level of controversy about the current US head of state.

In light of that the signature I have questioned is an overtly political
statement which not all US citizens would agree with.
That was my sole reason for questioning the validity of the signature.

I suggest that the subject should be dropped from this list.

Hi:

The easiest way to set punctuation level is to open the JAWS window with
Insert-j, then, go into the help menu and select the start-up wizard. The
first group of settings allows you to set speech rate, punctuation, typing
echo, and audio ducking if available.

The command that works like WE's read-to-end is insert-down arrow.

Hope this helps.

Is there anywhere I can download and install Jaws?

As I am planning to migrate, will it be possible for me to install Jaws
today, and let it run in some kind of Demo mode until I get my migrated

around a new installation?

If this does come to fruition, the great thing is that people
have choices and they're not tied to just one thing.

They can a. switch to a different screenreader such as NVDA, and cut the costs
of SMA's and other software agreements.

b. They can switch to jaws, although I suspect for various and sundry
reasons a lot of people don't want to do that, because they chose
Window-eyes for a reason, but the choice is still there.

C. they can switch to a low-cost sollution like System access, yes it
is still under development under the sero name. It still gets updates
and is maintained.

D.

The people who still want to, can always stick with Window-eyes. The
only part

of this choice that concerns me is that soon enough, it won't be able

to keep up with many of the advances on the internet and
newly-released software. If development ceases completely, they may as
well just make it free, throw it out there and say ok, have at it.

We will just have to see what happens until VFO is ready to make a
statement. Until then it's buisness as usual.

Subject: Windows 10 email problem

After installing Windows 10 anniversary, I wanted to experiment with the
new email program in Windows 10, and my preferred screen reader is
Window-eyes 9.5.4.

This program is pretty bare bones with no message rules whatsoever, so I
don't think much of it. However, the reason I am writing is to mention a
problem I have encountered and to find out whether others have
encountered this and if a fix is available or some keystroke about which
I am unaware.

Even though I have disabled the reading pane in the settings, messages
seem to be read in the reading pane, and if I press either enter or
space bar, seldom does the message actually open. Once in a while it
does, but it is very inconsistent.

I would therefore like to hear of the experiences which other
Window-eyes users have had using this new email program. Incidentally,
Jaws 16 shows similar behavior for me. Thanks in advance for feedback.

I saw the following on another list. Perhaps someone should talk to the
developer of this program to make it more accessible?

Hi Group,

I downloaded and installed the newest version of OE Classic version 2.51.
It is definitely not accessible. None of the first letter navigation
features work as they do in the original Outlook Express. Folder
navigation

is not possible without use of the JAWS/review cursor. Similarly,
navigating the options menus is not possible using classic keystrokes
such

as tab and shift tab. You must use review/JAWS cursor to highlight items
and click with the JAWS/mouse cursors.

Unless you really want to be frustrated or unless there is some setting I
must change to make the program more accessible, I would not recommend it
for blind users.

The word
accessibility was used but it is used in the context of having your
messages
and perhaps other things available easily. If the program had
intentionally
been made more accessible, I think that would have been mentioned as a
new

development.

And even if the program were more accessible than previously, convenience
and accessibility are two different things. Unless the program can do
things like first letter navigation in the folders field, then it may be
made accessible and still won't be convenient as Outlook Express was.

Also, identities are not used in this program which may be important
to some

people.

I very much doubt that this program is any more accessible than in the
past
and I wouldn't be surprised if the conveniences that people like in
Outlook

Express are not present.

The reviews I read said it is very similar to WindowsXP version of

Let me know how you find using it, the setup process and the

does it use the Menu Dropdowns like Outlook Express did?
Outlook Express was indeed a very nice e-mail provider to work with.

Hi Ray,

Unfortunately, the issues you are seeing are due to Webroot Secure anywhere.

You may need to run the emergency removal utility , close Webroot (stop its
protection) before installing Window-eyes and install Window-eyes again.
Webroot is blocking Window-eyes components from being installed properly.

As far as your wife's h for heading key not working or all other quick
navigation keys if there is a setting in Webroot that deals with keylogging,
turn it off.
It doesn't like the fact you are pressing an H and Window-eyes is doing
something with that H. It thinks Window-eyes is logging your keystrokes so it
doesn't let them through.

Webroot was supposed to have white listed Window-eyes. Apparently it didn't.

If you want something that works like webroot but is more accessible, check out
GData internet security. In GData you'll need to turn off its keylogging
function as well to get the quick navigation keys to work.

Hello WE Support:

I am writing to let you know about some major issues we’re having with
Window-Eyes 9.3.1 both on our Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 machines.
Here is what is happening and what I’ve tried.

On the Windows 8.1 machine, I ran the update from Window-Eyes 9.2 to
Window-Eyes 9.3.1 yesterday. When I got the update installed and re-started
the computer, my antivirus package, Webroot Secure Anywhere, flagged what I
believe was a Window-Eyes DLL file as a threat. I can’t remember the entire
file name, but it started with GWHK and had the extension DLL. Webroot isn’t
the most accessible tool, but I was able to get over to where it said
de-select, click it and then hit continue.

The problems didn’t end there. When I go to my desktop, I hear Window-Eyes say
‘No Selected Item’. When I arrow around on the desktop, I don’t hear anything.

When I went into my documents folder, I noticed that using the up and down
arrow I wasn’t hearing my files and folders being read. This was also true
when I went to the folder view on my external hard drive, as well as when I
typed in a search for something from the start menu and hit enter and the
search results came up.

Thinking there might have been something wrong with the update, and, since I
have a full 9.3.1 install because we got my wife a new Windows
10 computer, I uninstalled Window-Eyes and used the 9.3.1 full install to
re-install the software. The problems I had didn’t go away. I notice if I,
say, go into the documents folder, then shut down and re-start Window-Eyes, I
can then read down through the list of files and folders. But, If I go into a
folder, I have the same problem where I can’t read the list of files or folders
using the arrow key and have to shut down and re-start Window-Eyes again.

I noticed something when I initially go into folders like documents.
When I do that, then do ctrl+backslash to open the Window-Eyes control panel,
the file announced is default.set. When I re-start Window-Eyes, then, go into
the WE control panel, I hear wineyes.set announced. I’m thinking there could
be issues with file associations that I’m seeing. How ca

I've downloaded and installed Win-Eyes 9.3. I'm finding in Outlook 2013 now,
that when I open a message by hitting Enter, I routinely hear the first line
read twice. Is there an adjustment I can make to correct this? I've tried
increasing the trigger delay from1 to 5, but the behavior persists, so guess
that isn't the problem.

This is a Windows 7 machine, 64-bit version, and have Office 2013

Anyone who is eligible to run Window-Eyes 9.2 can upgrade to 9.3 at no cost.
The presence of a software maintenance agreement makes no difference in this
case.

Hello everyone.
Hope all is well.

Here is my problem, and it has been going on for a while now, deffinately
since the 9.0 days until today 9.2.
Whenever I open a program, it doesn't matter which one from the desktop, I
need to alt tab to get to the program I just opened.
Is this fixable with window eyes.
I do not have this problem in any other screen reader.
I'm using windows ten.
But I believe this also was an issue with 8.1 Thank you.

Hi: OK, so it looks like WindowEyes is somehow having a negative impact on
Internet Explorer likely via something it does that steps on what Internet
Explorer is doing and if not causing it to crash then causing reading
problems, slowdowns and, or, lockups - perhaps.
This is what I had guessed since people using other readers were not getting
anywhere near the problems that WindowEyes users were getting using various
products when it comes to slowdowns and lockups as well as reading losses on
websites.
I once saw an error message that there was a problem in one of the native
dlls of the operating system that I believe WindowEyes and Internet Explorer
may both be using - not a good idea to continue using native operating
system features when Microsoft is building everything around the .net
framework with specialized handling of operating system dlls for fundemental
operating system features me thinks.
I know that is sort of "geek speak" but the test Manny just ran and
Elizibith concurred on tells me that looking at WindowEyes would be the
prime place to look for a solution to the problem while not excluding other
possibilities.
I have posted on this and other e-lists asking about a tool to monitor what
is going on under the operating system covers when WindowEyes starts to slow
down and crash or stop reading, but nobody has anything other than the Task
Manager which wont tell you anything of use, or usually not, since you cant
read it when the screen reader is dead whether for a few seconds or for
longer.
Nobody had any good ideas of something accessible to track the actions of
things like scripts, system dlls or third party processes that could be
tracked when a problem starts but I am pretty sure one could be built - just
quite complicated and time consuming and a tool that AI Squared has to have
available already or they are in the dark when trying to test and debug
their product - I have not heard from anyone from AI Squared as to what they
use.
At least you can do your work using jaws until, unless, AI Squared figures
out what the problem is and how to fix it - if they can, given the current
WindowEyes platform infastructure.
So, as I am known to say on the Blind Finance list...
Good Hunting Gang!

are under no obligation to install it. All of the information is on the
site where you reserve or cancel your Windows 10 upgrade. Oh, yes, I
reserved a copy of Windows 10 on my computer running Windows 8.1 as well as
my laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.

P.S. Like I mentioned earlier, I checked to see if the get Windows 10
button is in the system tray, and indeed it is still there. I wasn't even
sure the button was in the system tray until I checked for it. At least
Microsoft isn't forcing us to upgrade to Windows 10, although from comments
I have heard through the grapevine, I have a feeling that they are trying to
encourage their customers to upgrade, just like A I Squared encourages its
customers to upgrade Window-eyes, smile. .

Hello Jeremy:

What a wonderfully open-ended question you have asked. As a person new to
WE, recently migrating from Zoom Text, I cannot comment on how past features
are different in the current version. I can only dream of what would make my
life easier with assistive technology such as Window Eyes.

1. As an engineer who focuses on architectural designs of complex systems, I
would like some way for graphical constructs (e.g. flowcharts, state
transition diagrams, UML diagrams, etc. to be described. Since all of these
types of graphics are not bitmap type graphics but logical representations
of logical connections between entities, some method of description should
be possible. The difficulty is that it may depend upon the package used to
create the visualization (Visio, Word Art, Enterprise Architect, etc.)
2. I think there is an opportunity to improve Power Point capabilities.
Perhaps it is my lack of experience with WE when reading Power Point
diagrams, but I find that tabbing between objects on a slide to be confusing
and not very intuitive. If I tab to a text box, for instance, I am told that
I am on a text box and its location, but its content is not disclosed. I
must hit enter to read the text contained within.
3. Improved access with collaborative tools, like WebEx. I am not sure if
this can be solved by the WE team alone. It probably requires accessibility
vendors to drive change in these collaborate tools to support accessibility.
Today, others in my workplace are used to helping me read screens presented
in these collaborative tools. I envision a future where this support is no
longer necessary and that I can read these shared screens as well as they
appear in their native tools.

From a business side, now that AI Squared and GW Micro are now one, I would
like to see an upgrade pricing strategy to support those migrating from Zoom
Text to Window eyes. I am currently using the WE for Office, but would like
to purchase a licensed copy with the extra voices and technical support, but
the $900 price tag is a significant barrier.

Thanks for asking and listening.

Unfortunately they are not. They are very subject to interfeerence,
and their battery lives are short. I tried two different units, the

the sound from breaking up. I also tried the h800 from logitech. The
bluetooth sound is horrible. The sound is very garbled. The sound
from the usb is great, but it breaks up a lot. If you have a
microwave, and you operate it while talking on either one of these
headsets, forget it. The sound goes out completely.
My recommendation is to stick with a corded headset. There is a
logitech which costs 60 dollars. The sound is out of this world, and
it is very sturdy, more so than any cordless. Cordless headsets tend
to be flimsy.
