RE: Webinar and tutorial topics - feedback requested

2015-11-27 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Hello Mark:

Below are some of my musings regardins trainings and webinars.

Audio editing using Audacity with Window eyes.

Tips to give the sighted so that they can produce accessible html emails.
How to alt tag images, links, etc. Segment emails using headings, etc.

Working with visual Studio.

Microsoft office, going beyond the basics:
Customizing and using the quick navigation toolbar.
Working with styles in MS Word.
Working with the recovered documents pain.
Working with the VBA editor. Note, this is not how to program, but more on
how to use the tools provided.
Working with the trace and formula error dialogs in MS Excel. Since the
trace seems too graphical, I am not sure if this has a way to use without
vision.
MS Outlook, managing views, like conversation. Grouping emails by date,
sender, sorting choices, etc.
Advanced slide automations in MS Power Point. Playing sounds, videos, custom
slide animation, etc.
Creating and entering data in a form in MS Word
Tips and techniques for collaborative document editing using MS Word with
multiple content creators, both sighted and blind.
How to create a document in MS Word so that it can be turned into a
navigable pdf document for screen readers.
Working with fields in MS Word (e.g. cross references, footnotes, document
references, Table of contents, etc.) How to navigate a document using
hyperlink references. Adding and removing headers and footers, filling out
headers and footers.
Managing contacts in MS Outlook
Working with MS Visio

If any of the above topics pique your interest, feel free to contact me off
list to discuss further.

Ai Squared would like to request your feedback. What topics, applications
and tasks would you like for us to cover in a future Window-Eyes webinar or
tutorial? The more information and details you can provide the better. Here
are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing:

1. Using the Start Menu in Windows 10
2. Finding apps in the Windows Store
3. Purchasing a product from Amazon.com
4. What is ARIA and how can it help me on the web?
5. What is a Window-Eyes app?

Thanks,

RE: Math-ml

2015-11-20 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
What program are you using to display the MathML? Most modern web browsers
can display MathML. Microsoft Word's equation editor provides a limited
MathML editor capability. There are also specific MathML editors.

I have been unsuccessful in having Window Eyes speak all facets of an
equation created in Microsoft Word in its equation editor.

How to turn off speaking punctuation

2015-09-26 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Hello list:

On one of my computers, I had turned on the feature to have WE speak
characters, like plus, minus, slash, etc. Looking through the WE control

the verbosity settings, but I just can't seem to find it. Any help is
appreciated.

RE: Microsof Word Problem

2015-09-25 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Hello Chip:

Thanks for the quick reply. I disabled the Word Navigation app with no
change in behavior. I have some additional data to add, though.

There are four reviewers of the document. If I attempt to not show comments
for one of the reviewers, with only the offending document open, the same
misbehavior is exhibited (no speech for the Word document when navigating
and Insert-Tab shortcut no longer functions).

Unfortunately, I am using the Office version of WE. I have only needed WE
for the past 10 months and am eagerly awaiting the release of their Zoom
Text Fusion before plunking down my money, since I still rely on
magnification as well as speech.

Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick,

I don't believe there's any specific app involved here, as the functionality
you describe is part of the basic Window-Eyes.

I did write a word related app named Word Advanced Features, and AI has
written one named Word Navigation; so I guess the best thing to try is to
disable these if you have installed them, to see if the problem is fixed.

If disabling Word Advanced Features fixes the issue, then let me know;
otherwise, I think (assuming you aren't using the free version of
Window-Eyes), however your test turns out, or if you don't have these
installed, I'd let AI support know about the problem by emailing them the
document to their support email.

I've never seen this happen, and have no ideas as to what could be wrong.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have a Microsoft Word document that I created that contains 21 pages, 5600
words, 47 comments, numerous perceived misspellings (since it contains XML
code samples), some tracked changes and a couple of graphics. If I open this
document by itself, I have no problem navigating and having WE read the
document. I should mention that some of the comments are quite extensive,
often several paragraphs long. I can use the Insert-Tab keyboard shortcut to
view the various components of the word document. I am not sure what app
provides this functionality, but it works as long as this is the only Word
document open.

If I open a second Word document, the Insert-Tab shortcut no longer works on
the aforementioned document and scrolling through the document produces no
speech. This is not the case for the second opened word document, which
works just fine.

If I open two small word documents on my PC, WE behaves as expected. I can
switch between the documents and WE reads the text and the Inset-Tab
shortcut works. The problem seems to be related to the document that I
created. I cannot isolate the aspect of that document that causes this
misbehavior.

This happens on my work PC running office 2010, Windows 7 Pro, 12 G RAM as
well as my home PC, Office 2013, Win 7 Pro, 18 G Ram. I have the latest
version of WE (9.2 for office) with all updates and correct set files. I
also have Zoom Text, Version 10.0 running on both PCs. Zoom Text can read
the document when WE does not.

Hi Rick,

I am not sure what I can add. You could try to open the document with the
repair option to see if it's damaged (a damaged document could perhaps cause
Word or Window-Eyes to act strangely), otherwise, it's a WE bug it sounds
like, and without support there's not much to be done.

You could try installing my Word Advanced Features app. I don't usually
recommend it for trouble shooting, but it has a feature where it reads to
you tracked changes as you arrow to each line (so you don't have to move to
them), and perhaps it would keep WE from hitting some tracked changes
feature which is stopping it dead.

You could send me the document and I'd have a quick look at it to see if
anything suggests itself to me?

If this is for your work (and I think it is), I'd think it's worth buying
WE now and paying the upgrade fee for fusion later, so you'd get support
now.

Those are all the options I can think of.

RE: Why does Window-Eyes just stop talking?

2015-09-14 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
It's easy to say AI Squared should fix the problem. Unfortunately, no
software company, no matter how large or how small, can replicate every
single possible combination of computer configurations and permutations.
Unless you work for a large corporation where each PC is a clone of your
coworker, it is highly unlikely that any WE user's PC is configured
identically to that of another WE user. There's Win 7, 8.0, 8.1 and 10.
There's a plethora of patches. Various browsers, email clients, versions of
Flash and java, etc., not to mention all the different web sites and
applications.
Software companies maintain a set of computers with the most likely software
operating systems and applications to use for testing their software and
simulating user environments. But even in these controlled environments, it
is impossible to perform every combination of possibilities. For example, is
an email client running when working in Word? Was a web browser running? If
so, what page was being displayed? The combinations are staggering. When you
experience WE not behaving as expected, writing that it's broke and AI
Squared should fix it is insufficient and counter productive.
For example, on my work PC, WE will occasionally stop talking. If I simply
wrote that in an email to AI Squared, there is not enough information for
them to even attempt to replicate the problem at their site. But if I
instead wrote:

WE occasionally stops talking. If I ALT-Tab away from the current program
and then back, WE will resume talking. Wile this is better, it is still
probably not enough. Now , if I add the fact that this only happens when
Lotus Notes is running and that every time Lotus Notes replicates it
database, WE stops talking, AI squared has something more tangible to work
with. Adding my PC configuration and what programs were running in the
background can also help.

Win 7 Pro 64-bit, 12 G RAM, Office 2010, Lotus Notes 6.5.

Usually, problems are due to a unique combination of events that has
occurred. If this were not the case, AI Squared would have most likely
experienced the issue during their testing. When you experience WE not
behaving as you expect, try to replicate it in a minimal environment. Reboot
your PC and try to get it to happen without other programs running in the
background. Slowily add more applications until you can get the problem to
reoccur. Write down the steps in detail. Now, attempt to replicate repeating
your steps. Yes, I know this is a lot of work. This is what software testers
do every day. It is not enough to tell someone that it ain't working as
expected. You need to thell them how to repeat your actions so that they can
see the same results. Only then can you expect a software company to expend
resources to fix your repeatable problem.

Excel 2013, Completing cell editing with arrow keys behaves differently than using Eneter or Tab key

2015-08-31 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Hello Manny and Chris:

This thread seems to have lost my initial observation. I understand, Manny,
that you have some difficulty with headers. However, my problem is more
fundamental.

Currently, I still have the default verbosity configuration. In Excel 2013,
create a new spreadsheet.

In cells A1 to A3 put the values x, y and z respectively. In cells B1 to B3
put the values 1, 2 andd 3 respectively. Now go back to cell A1. Change the
value to something else, like ABC. Instead of using the Tab or Enter key to
finish the editing, use the right arrow key, which should complete the
editing and move you to Cell B1. Only a beep sound is heard, instead of the
cell reference and its value. Same if I press the down arrow key, trying to
move to cell A2. If I just arrow around without editing a cell, everything
works just fine. Each cell's reference is spoken along with its value.

Hi Many:
Instead of starting on cell a1, you should start on the first column of the
row where your column headings are located. For instance, if your headings
are on row 3, you go to cell 3,and set up the speaking of headings by
pressing shift-alt-h, then follow the dialog as you have done.

RE: Seeking Your Input

2015-05-29 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Hello Jeremy:

What a wonderfully open-ended question you have asked. As a person new to
WE, recently migrating from Zoom Text, I cannot comment on how past features
are different in the current version. I can only dream of what would make my
life easier with assistive technology such as Window Eyes.

1. As an engineer who focuses on architectural designs of complex systems, I
would like some way for graphical constructs (e.g. flowcharts, state
transition diagrams, UML diagrams, etc. to be described. Since all of these
types of graphics are not bitmap type graphics but logical representations
of logical connections between entities, some method of description should
be possible. The difficulty is that it may depend upon the package used to
create the visualization (Visio, Word Art, Enterprise Architect, etc.)
2. I think there is an opportunity to improve Power Point capabilities.
Perhaps it is my lack of experience with WE when reading Power Point
diagrams, but I find that tabbing between objects on a slide to be confusing
and not very intuitive. If I tab to a text box, for instance, I am told that
I am on a text box and its location, but its content is not disclosed. I
must hit enter to read the text contained within.
3. Improved access with collaborative tools, like WebEx. I am not sure if
this can be solved by the WE team alone. It probably requires accessibility
vendors to drive change in these collaborate tools to support accessibility.
Today, others in my workplace are used to helping me read screens presented
in these collaborative tools. I envision a future where this support is no
longer necessary and that I can read these shared screens as well as they
appear in their native tools.

From a business side, now that AI Squared and GW Micro are now one, I would
like to see an upgrade pricing strategy to support those migrating from Zoom
Text to Window eyes. I am currently using the WE for Office, but would like
to purchase a licensed copy with the extra voices and technical support, but
the $900 price tag is a significant barrier.

Thanks for asking and listening.

RE: Transferring We Settings to another PC

This sounds like a great opportunity for a WE enhancement. Perhaps an Export
Settings and Import Settings could be added by AI Squared in a future
release. A dialog could be presented where one could check which settings
could be chosen to export or import.

I think that practically everything you would need is in the directory you
open when you do Files, Explore Profile. I would probably copy that entire
folder, and then on the new computer update as necessary. But I didn't read
all of the messages leading up to this one.

That's why I ask the question. There have to be key files in doing this
as that's where the settings reside.
I have certain defined hotkeys,
pagemarkers, settings which might take me hours not only to reconstruct
but also to figure where some of those settings and hotkeys are defined.
In the old WE days, when everything was in a single directory, this was
easy to do.
So that's why I raise the question.

If I am at my Inbox, that is, in the main window of Outlook, and press Alt-F

However, from my Inbox, if I press Alt-T or Alt-P, I get a ding.
I had referred to the T which selects Options from the File menu as the

Anyway, I figure as I move down the File menu and select Options, I should
hear Options, T, which should alert me to the existence of the shortcut

However, I am not hearing this, and I'm wondering why.

RE: Disgussion of problems with keyboards.

2015-04-28 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
I do not believe that the support person advocated that an external keyboard
was a permanent solution, but only for assistance in trouble shooting your
problem. There are many of us that have HP laptops that do not exhibit the
problem that you are having. It would be nearly impossible for AI Squared to
replicate your unique situation in their labs. Hence, I believe that they are
asking for your assistance to help diagnose and fix your particular issue.

Good evening all,

As all of you know after reading a few messages about the problem that I’m
having with my laptop computer , I’m still not able to use my keyboards laptop
delete key, nor am I able to use my F8 key too begin the selection process.
Perhaps I’m wrong too suggest this, but I think that there might be a conflict
problem between the window eyes program, and keyboards on HP laptops. I did
have a discussion with a tek support person about this issue. I first tried
disabling the insert key layout, and then setting the keyboard too laptop key
layout, and had no success with any of these suggestions. It was suggested,
that I try hooking up an external keyboard to the laptop, and seeing if the
two problems disappear. The thing here is, why should we be asked too do that
when it means having to have to carry an extra peace of hardware just to be
able too use a delete key, when there is a delete key that is already on a
persons laptop computer.. This is something I believe, that needs to be looked
into so that future problems like this don’t have too happen for those of us
that use and want too use laptops. This is not meant too be interpreted as a
chritizism towards the developers and programmers of windoweyes, but I think
that this issue needs too be addressed.

RE: speaking of Dell computers...

2015-04-27 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Hello Rick:

I understand your frustration. It is amazing the number of posts dedicated
to this subject. Yet, I did not see this topic mentioned during any of the
Version 9 beta testing, despite the fact that Dell eliminated this key as
far back as 2012. As a developer, I understand the difficulty of keeping up
with hardware changes. Some computer vendors change their hardware platform
more frequently than some people change their underware!

A company this size of AI Squared (and GW Micro cannot possibly keep up with
the plethora of computer vendors and their offers. In addition, vendors like
Dell offer several keyboard choices when purchasing their computers. It is
quite possible that AI Squared was not aware of this problem until this
flurry of postings. We should give them the benefit of the doubt and hope
that they can provide some update that deals with the situation.

In the mean time, there are several workarounds to consider. Gor those
upgradiong from an older computer, using the keyboard from the previous
computer should suffice. If a static setting is desired, BIOS or registry
setting should be sufficient. And if toggling is needed, the on screen
keyboard provided in the accessability options will work, albeit kludgy.

At least you have a hockey game to listen to. Here in the Northeast, the
Bruins taked at the end of the season and eliminated themselves from the
playoffs.

Hi Steve:
It is incumbent on a piece of software to work with a given platform
including operating systems and, in the case of a screen reader, the
keyboard which is the primary interface for their clients and the only thing
they have to use the features of the software.
A simple list of manufacturers and hardware that works well with WindowEyes
might be the easiest and least costly solution.
Also, a list of settings for various other gotchyas like audio cards should
also be available for the more common choices a WindowEyes client may make.
This needs to be available on a WebPage and not burried in some technical,
or many technical, articles requiring a long search effort by a new user and
available before a user buys a new machine with the intent of using
WindowEyes on it.
Just a part of having a professional piece of software and considering the
target audience.
Another choice would be to act as a ReSeller of compatible hardware and
software products but I can see AI Squared selling at a much higher markup
than other standard retailers and thus things costing us more.
I give up. I don't run that company, am not in their management team nor do
I sit on the Board so any further comments might be beetching the whale and
I will just drop this thread and go listen to Red Wing Hockey and Ken and
Paul call the game - smile.
Later and have a good weekend!

RE: Num Lock

2015-04-27 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Apparently, Dell has been shipping keyboards for quite a while without the
Num Lock key. The folling is a link to a posting about this issues dating
back to 2012 and lasting for two years. However, there was never a
satisfactory answer for toggling the function.

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19476756?pi2195
3=1

Some suggestions given were to hold the Clear key down for two seconds and
Num Lock would silently toggle. Further postings claimed this did not work
for them. Another offered the key combination of Ctrl-Backspace, which
others again found not to work.

Registry and BIOS changes are also offered in the list, but these do not
help for toggling the functionality, only for fixing it in one ore the other
state.

One suggestion was to open the onscreen keyboard and toggle the function
using this. While this may be kludgy, it offers an alternative that could
work in the short term.

I did not realize the omission of this key. When I set up my wife's new
Dell last December, I never used the included keyboard but just hooked it up
to my existing keyboard and mouse. I did not like the feel of the new
keyboard (too mushy). Maybe I'll call Dell and see what they have to say
since the computer is still under warranty. Since the computer was purchased
under their small business division, maybe the support results may be
different than their home support.

Subject: Num Lock

Hi: OK, so we can either set the applications key function using auto hot
key or use shift and f10 and that is ok.
Now, why not have a WE setting in the control panel to lock the num lock
setting and perhaps a hot key combo to toggle it?
Using the f10 key would then become the default WE Applications key and the
num lock could be toggled easily or set in the WE Control Panel.
Just a thought on what seems an easy fix to a potential major headache for
WE Users who get confused with the newer keyboards not having these keys.
WE should work with modern technologies out of the box and this would
eliminate these 2 problems me thinks.
Searching for non-standard modern or outdated keyboards is not a good thing
to force your clients into having to do to use your product when it is not
necessary at all with minimal programming effort.
Neither is having clients required to load up and use someone elses software
like auto hot key - they should be able to buy the product, turn it on and
use it - not turn it on and hope they can figure out some way to fix it
before even using it.
At least from the prior postings this would seem to be the case.
Does this make sense or am I missing something?

Window Eyes Tip not very helpful

2015-03-26 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Today, I got the following tip on the Window Eyes Tip of the day:

Window-Eyes allows the mouse pointer to be locked on either a vertical or
horizontal axis, providing an efficient way for low vision users to track
the mouse pointer across a straight line.

While this alerts the user to a great feature of WE, it offers no help on
how to accomplish the mouse locking capability.

I am not asking how to do this, but only to offer possible improvement to
this tip in the future.

PPSX files show none of the actual user interface of PowerPoint, just the

Using Windows Explorer, I selected multiple Word (.docx) files. I then hit
the Enter key. The multiple files (3 in my case) all opened in Word just
great. However, only one file would read the correct text when using the
down arrow and up arrow keys to navigate the document. The remaining
documents would read the last line read in the working document each time
the up or down arrow was pressed. They did, however, read the style changes
for the active document. If I open each document separately, everything
works as expected.

MS Word, Information Selection unusable on large documents

2015-02-21 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Being somewhat new to WE, today I listened to the WE 9.0 tutorials and
learned about the Information Selection (Insert + Tab) dialog. Being eager
to try this out on a document that I am currently reviewing, I hit the keys
and WE stopped talking for about 30 seconds. Only once in many attemps did
it let me know it was building the information. Even Alt Tabbing to other
programs did not revive WE speech.

The document that I am working on contains 414 pages, 673 revisions, 83
objects, 314 tables, 2 bookmarks and, being technical in nature, many
perceived misspellings.

Once the dialog finally opens, navigating through the radio buttons to
select what information to choose will also sometimes take many seconds
with WE not talking.

While the response of this dialog is quite reasonable for small documents, I
think an architectural change is needed for it to be usable for large
documents. It might be better to build this information in the background so
that when the key combination is selected, the data is already present and
the response can be very quick.

At the present time, I feel that this dialog is not usable for large
documents with a lot of items that are selectable with this dialog box.
