RE: Accessibility Credits And Small Business

2015-10-20 Thread Chip Orange via Talk
Hi Rick,

As I've mentioned before (with you and I on a different list), a blind
individual can make use of the medical reimbursement account (part of flexible
spending benefits) to pay not only obvious medical expenses, but also to pay
expenses related to a disability. This can be for the care and feeding of a
guide dog for instance, or special technology (I myself used it one year to pay
for a portible book reader); anything which is especially produced and used by
a disabled person is elligible. This may give the individual approximately a
20% discount by avoiding taxes on the money used for the expense.

This doesn't help the business owner if that's the kind of break you're looking
for. In that case, you might look around for mailing lists used by blind small
business owners.

Hth,

Chip

Hi: What tax or other resources are available to a small business owner for
the purchases of accessibility software required for their job or for their
employees like the purchases of a screen reader or third party supports like
scripting costs or anything else you can think of?
Sorry if this message is screwed up but I am having some

What is available at the Federal level can be found at:

https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Tax-Benefits
-for-Businesses-Who-Have-Employees-with-Disabilities

A lot of these benefits are limited for various reasons, so each business
needs to consult their tax advisor since all small businesses may not get a
benefit. Also these benefits may have calendar deadlines for them.
Otherwise the expense is just a business deduction for them like the general
business expenses.

You would need to consult with each state for any benefits at that level.

Hope this helps.

Barbara
