Re: Can MP3 files be played on the nls digital talking-book machine
You can put NLS books on the drive with the mp3 files, but then, the mp3 files have to be put in the audio+podcasts folder that I have mentioned in previous messages. And as for why I am writing an off topic message, I just answered one that was sent to this list. Yes they will, if there is nothing else on the drive or cartridge. You only have to use the folder if you intend to mix them with NLS books. Re: Can MP3 files be played on the nls digital talking-book machine
Just to clarify, both methods work. If you only want to play MP3 files just copy them to a blank thumb drive or cartridge. Actually you can connect an external USB hard drive as long as it's externally powered. But if you want to have both NLS books and MP3 files on the same drive you need to put the MP3 files in the Audio+Podcasts folder so it will be in your book list. Instead, just use a normal Flash Drive, load it up with your MP3 files, either in a folder, or not, doesn't seem to matter. Plug in the Flash Drive into the NLS player. Remove any NLS Cart rage, because if one is in the machine, it will take priority, and the NLS machine will not see the Flash Drive. With the Cartrige removed, turn on the NLS player, and you machine should recognize the Flash drive and its contents. I usually listen to lessons of various types, and so put files on the same topic in a folder of their own. You can have as many folders as you wish on the Flash drive. To move through the folders, the NLS player has that short Bar Button up at the top end that selcts to go to the next file, folder, or part. If you've selected Folder, pushing the left or Right Buttons will move you forward in the line of folders on the drive, or backwards. The NLS machine does not tell you the name of the folder. This would be nice, but the NLS player is not made as an all purpose player. So you can move to the next folder, and start to play the first file in that folder. Doing this will give you enough info to know what folder you are reading files from. With my machine, I think I listen to more MP3 files than I do Talking Books. I am looking for beginner Programing Books in MP3 format, if any of you happen to know of any, or and direct me where I might find some. I am looking for books teaching Python, or C Sharp, or Visual Basic, to write Apps for Window eyes, and other things. I know a little about programming, but not enough. No problem at all mixing content, just put mp3 files as described in earlier messages. I've done that for years. 73 Butch WA0VJR Node 3148 Wallace, ks. Just hit the fast forward button or the next element button, or the previous if you want to go back. And since there is no bookshelf, you don't have to worry about getting in or out of that. Re: Can MP3 files be played on the nls digital talking-book machine
Yes. I guess you are not on the BARD list. You can put them on the root of a cartridge or drive. But if you want to mix them in with nls books, you have to create a folder that you will name "audio+podcasts". That's the word audio, directly followed by the plus sign, directly followed by the word podcasts. In other words, all in one word. But you only have to do this if you are mixing content. If you just want to fill a cartridge full of mp3 files, you can skip that step and just put the files directly onto it. But you can't play mp4 files, though; just mp3 files. Also, if you have more than one file in the audio+podcasts folder, how to you get from one mp3 file to the next please? And, let me add, if your MP3 file is a stereo recording it will play through stereo headphones in 2-channel stereo. Original message: Yes. If you mix mp3 files on a cartridge or thumb drive, they must be put in a folder that you mmust create called "mp3+podcasts". That's mp3, the plus sign, and the word podcasts all in one word. But if you are just putting them on a cartridge or drive by themselves, they can just go on the root of the drive or cartridge. Caution, though: the NLS player won't play mp4 files, so they must be converted to mp3, or you must get the same thing in an mp3 file.
