Good luck,

Re: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-24 Thread Russ Kiehne via Talk

I took a lot of time thinking about if I should buy a second generation
victor reader stream. I ended up buying a ipad mini. Here's why:
It has more volume and better sound than my ipod touch 5th generation, first
generation victor reader stream

booksense and plextalk pocket. It does everything I would do with a
specialized player and a lot more. With being able to lock the screen
while

playing audio content, I get much more play time than with my specialized
players.

A Snapfon is a simple cell phone. It is made for seniors thus has large
numbers and button that are well spaced apart for easy feeling. Easy for the
blind.

It is not an Iphone. Just a simple, inexpensive cell phone for those of us
who do not need an expensive Iphone.

It announces the numbers as you press them. Unfortunately it does not talk
to set the functions. You will need a sighted person to help with that.

If you are happy with your Iphone, then forget it. But if you are looking
for a simple cell phone, this is it.

I had an Iphone for 3 years and never could learn to use it. So I dumped it.

It has nothing to do with a Victor Reader. I just mentioned that I got one
of those also.

If anyone is interested in looking at the Snapfon, go to:

hold it together. So you sit the phone on top with the camera looking

I can't remember the name of it. But I'll look around to see if I kept

I don't use either much because I don't have the need to scan books or

Actually I seldom use the field of view report. It was fine when I first
got the app. But once I got used to reasonable placement of the phone
for the picture I stopped using it. Then again, I'm usually not using it
for critical reading where I need the absolute best. In that situation I
would use it. So it's not totally necessary. Just my opinion.

Re: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-24 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
Yeah, I was amazed the first time I tried reading a can label. I was
sure it wouldn't be able to read text from a curved surface. It may take
a few tries. But eventually I get it. And if the stars are lined up I
get it on the first shot.
There are also bar code reading apps designed to do the same thing. But
then you're really in the same position trying to find the bar code. The
benefit to those is that if the product is in the database you may get
all kinds of information on it, i.e. ingredients, nutritional
information, cooking instructions, etc.

The description is not perfect, but you will at least have an idea of
what is in the can.

Yes. I got a couple stands. One is a little tripod with a spring loaded
slide clamp to hold the phone. The other is a laminated cardboard box
that was originally designed for folks needing to scan documents while
traveling on business. It folds up flat and when you expand it magnets
hold it together. So you sit the phone on top with the camera looking
through a peep whole and put what you want to scan in the box. There's
two models. One with a little set of LED lights inside and the other
without. It can use a battery or AC power. And it wasn't expensive. 29
or 39 bucks. something like that.
I can't remember the name of it. But I'll look around to see if I kept
any notes on it.
I don't use either much because I don't have the need to scan books or
long documents. But they work good.

Tom

The description is not perfect, but you will at least have an idea of what
is in the can.

Hi,
Just a little question. Can the knfb reader read a label on a can of soup,
just as an example? I have been told yes as well as no. Would really
appreciate a straight answer on this. Thanks so much.

Regards,
Tom

Actually I seldom use the field of view report. It was fine when I first
got the app. But once I got used to reasonable placement of the phone
for the picture I stopped using it. Then again, I'm usually not using it
for critical reading where I need the absolute best. In that situation I
would use it. So it's not totally necessary. Just my opinion.

Imagine you are a student in college. You have some paper handouts that
you got from class that you cannot read, you also have a print textbook.
So how do you read it? First you unlock your android phone or your
iPhone. Then you go into the knnfb reader app. And then you hold the
phone a foot above the page. And then you press the field of view report
button first making sure you are pointing the camera on the bottom of the
phone down towards the page. Then you hit field of view report button you
double tap it on the phone’s touch screen. You hear your phone say
outloud with its screen reader:

All four corners of the page are visible.

Then holding the phone as steady as you can, you double tap the take
picture button. The phone snaps a photo of the page, does OCR on the
text, and reads the text out loud to you. And you can scan whole entire
books very very fast with just the 8mp camera on your smartphone.

Re: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-23 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Regards,
Tom

Actually I seldom use the field of view report. It was fine when I first
got the app. But once I got used to reasonable placement of the phone
for the picture I stopped using it. Then again, I'm usually not using it
for critical reading where I need the absolute best. In that situation I
would use it. So it's not totally necessary. Just my opinion.

Ok here is how you use knfb reader this is just an example.
Imagine you are a student in college. You have some paper handouts
that you got from class that you cannot read, you also have  a print
textbook. So how do you read it? First you unlock your android phone
or your iPhone. Then you go into the knnfb reader app. And then you
hold the phone a foot above the page. And then you press the field of
view report button first making sure you are pointing the camera on
the bottom of the phone down towards the page. Then you hit field of
view report button you double tap it on the phone’s touch screen. You
hear your phone say outloud with its screen reader:

All four corners of the page are visible.

Then holding the phone as steady as you can, you double tap the take

RE: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
Robert,

The KNFB reader uses a camera in a phone or other divice to take a picture of a
document. Then, it performs optical character recognition (OCR) and reads the
content. Its strongest point is that it performs the OCR in such a way that it
can start reading very quickly. As Josh says, it can be made to process files
as well. It takes some practice to know how far away from a document to hold
the camera and to aim, but there are tools to help with that. There are other
OCR apps that are cheaper, but all in all, I've been happy with the KNFB
Reader. It does take practice, though.

My experience has been regardless of how good an app is, different apps
sometimes provide the best results so one needs multiple tools at their
disposal.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

And it's a fabulous OCR which is how it started. I have it on my iPhone

gadgets, etc. It also works pretty good when you have to read your
computer screen or any other kind of display.
There's also a free one from Microsoft called seeing AI. It's useful but
doesn't compare to KNFB when it comes right down to it.

RE: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. via Talk
And, in Android land, we have so many apps that work even better than the
KNFB Reader for merely pennies on the dollar! I think that in a few years,
may be weeks and months, many blind folks in Android land will slowly begin
kissing the KNFB Reader goodbye! Heck, there's even one in Android land,
though experimental at the moment, that will scan and read handwritten
stuff.

Sincerely,
Olusegun

Re: What is a KNFB Reader?

2017-11-22 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
Actually I seldom use the field of view report. It was fine when I first
got the app. But once I got used to reasonable placement of the phone
for the picture I stopped using it. Then again, I'm usually not using it
for critical reading where I need the absolute best. In that situation I
would use it. So it's not totally necessary. Just my opinion.

Ok here is how you use knfb reader this is just an example.
Imagine you are a student in college. You have some paper handouts that you got
from class that you cannot read, you also have a print textbook. So how do you
read it? First you unlock your android phone or your iPhone. Then you go into
the knnfb reader app. And then you hold the phone a foot above the page. And
then you press the field of view report button first making sure you are
pointing the camera on the bottom of the phone down towards the page. Then you
hit field of view report button you double tap it on the phone’s touch screen.
You hear your phone say outloud with its screen reader:

All four corners of the page are visible.

Then holding the phone as steady as you can, you double tap the take picture
button. The phone snaps a photo of the page, does OCR on the text, and reads
the text out loud to you. And you can scan whole entire books very very fast
with just the 8mp camera on your smartphone.
