By way of a bit of history of my experience of working with email, here goes. A few years ago, around 2012, I was forced to transfer all my archived email from Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird due to the fact that I could no longer reliably edit email in it because of the kind of accessibility woes you have described. Later, Thunderbird began displaying similar, yet not so troubling, accessibility issues; moreover, eventually, Thunderbird became so totally frustrating as it kept retrieving from my very reputable Bell Canada email server messages I had repeatedly deleted. This was the last straw, and, besides, I had always wanted to embrace the Microsoft Office suite of programs, specifically, Word and Outlook; my major reason was that the universal use of Office meant that all screen reader manufacturers would remain committed to ensuring its accessibility for us. Since my transition to Outlook, I must say that, although I have had my frustrations with it, it has been very reliable for my email needs. Outlook also allows me to review my Twitter tweets through the use of a free add-on (http://www.techhit.com/TwInbox/twitter_plugin_outlook.html), one which allows me to read them identically to reading email, namely, using arrow keys in a folder list. As a Window-Eyes app developer as well, Microsoft Word, in conjunction with a Window-Eyes app written by Chip Orange (http://www.gwmicro.com/App_Central/Apps/App_Details/?scriptid=1238), allows me to use the VBA integrated development environment to edit my app code in a very powerful way. So, with my newest Windows 10 PC, I have subscribed to Office 365 personal, such that, for seven dollars per month, I have a stable and accessible software platform. Even after making the changes in Config Edit, Window-eyes still isn't speaking when backspacing within Thunderbird. Plus, I still experience a lot of freeze-ups within IE requiring a re-launch of WE. No screen reader is perfect, but I don't have near the problems particularily with TB using NVDA and it supports more out-of-box without the need for a ton of apps. hello rod can you do an audio podcast of how twaddon works? have a happy new year - Original Message - From: "Rod Hutton via Talk" <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> To: <j...@jedbarton.com>; "'Window-Eyes Discussion List'" <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> Sent: Saturday, January 02, 2016 10:16 AM Subject: Why I switch to Outlook Was RE: major thunderbird problems Hi Jed, I'm posting my reply to you to the talk list as well just in case others might find it of benefit. I hope this answers your question. I have been having major thunderbird problems, so bad, that for some unknown reason, it's virtually unusable. I am running we 8.4, cause my computer is too slow for 9.3. I literally made no changes. I can no longer focus on the body of an email that i am typing. When i am typing, it will randomly say control search mode. When i arrow up and down in the message, it literally says nothing. I have to keep re-focusing thunderbird, by minimizing everything, then going back to the message window. This is obviously unacceptable. It can not continue.Does anyone have any ideas of what to do. I have no idea why this is happening, and it literally started happening out of nowhere. RE: major thunderbird problems
Hi, Try setting your message composition to text. You can also turn off browse mode. It looks like screen readers in some situations think you should be in browse mode. The same happened to me the other day with another screen reader. This seems to be new with the latest TB. Just my observations. My system just randomly started doing this, and it's annoying to say the least. I am running we 8.4, windows 7. While i am in the middle of typing an email, thunderbird is saying downloading page, and as i type it'll say no place marker, no frame, stuff like that as i hit keys on the keyboard. I have to minimize everything, then go back to the message window. This is very annoying. On top of all that, when i press the up and down arrow in the message window, window-eyes says nothing, or it goes ding ding ding ding. I have tried 5 reboots, but the behavior continues. Any ideas on how to fix this? This is quite frankly unacceptable. ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared.
