Re: Windows ten creators' update issues.
I installed the creater update yesterday and did so using narrator. The install went quickly in about 20 minutes and had no problem with the update. Everything was spoken by narrator and I did have a keyboard hooked to my desktop computer. I was actually surprised by how fast the upgrade went. Now my question is what has changed by the upgrade? The only thing that I've noticed is that narrator now must be started by Control windows enter. I did, while my computer was silent, plug headphones into my computer, but with no activity, hung on the welcome screen, there is no potential for sounds to occur, and with no keyboard, how was I to know if my silent narrator was approaching the "next" key with the mouse. Narrator did not stay with me after the last boot, and with no way to invoke it I was hung. So BE WARE! you can turn cortana off in the privacey settings. you can also set the search to only search locally on your computer only and not on the net. but i don't remember where this setting is. for files you could use the file explorer. i think its in the sys tray. this is all from memory because i seldom use windows 10 at all. thats on another removable drive. -Original Message- From: brice Mijares via Talk Sent: Wednesday, November 23, 2016 11:22 AM To: Window-Eyes Discussion List Subject: searching in windows ten How do you go about searching for files or folders in win ten? windows key brings up a search box, I can't search for files or folder. if its there look for volume control in the sys tray. do not adjust the volume control there. this is the master volume for all devices, includeing window eyes. arrow down to mixer. in the mixer you have a volume control for each device that is running. sometimes youwill see the flash player, window eyes, system soundes etc. usually the firefox or i e volume will control the volume of the audio or video you are listening to in a browser. -Original Message- From: Ted Larson via Talk Sent: Saturday, June 18, 2016 6:29 PM To: Window-Eyes Discussion List Subject: how do you adjust windows ten volume? Hi Paulette, It sounds as though you want to upgrade so that you can install the Amazon Echo app, but you should be aware that the July deadline to upgrade Windows 10 for free does not apply to screen reader users should you decide to hang on to Windows 7. You need to check which version of Window-Eyes you are running. You need Window-Eyes 9.2 or higher in order to upgrade to and use Windows 10, 9.0 and 9.1 won't work and you won't be able to upgrade with these versions installed. GW Micro produced a 2-part tutorial on upgrading to Windows 10. you can access it from this Knowledge Bite http://www.gwmicro.com/Support/Knowledge_Base/?kbnumber=GWKB2066. As for what Windows 10 is like once you've actually installed it, a lot of people really like it. For my part I'm agnostic really. It's fine as far as it goes, but I wouldn't say that it had revolutionised my Windows experience. I haven't used my Windows PC for a few weeks, but when I did, Windows 10's default web browser (Microsoft Edge) was not accessible. This isn't particularly a problem though, as you can use Internet Explorer or a third party browser if required. Re: Making the leap to Windows Ten!
Hi Paulette When you are first setting up your echo, you must use a wifi connected computer or phone. A hard wired computer will not work. Any windows computer will work as long as it is using wifi! When you start the setup process, you first start entering information on the echo.amazon.com website. At some point, you will be instructed to switch to the WIFI connection coming from your echo to enter the login information that the echo needs. RE: Making the leap to Windows Ten!
Hi Paulette: The Amazon Echo, based on what I've read about it, uses wireless connectivity to access the Internet. Does your router not support wireless connectivity? If it does, you'll need to install a wireless access point card on your computer for the Echo to work as advertised. If it is working with your iPhone, it is connecting using WI-FI. I don't know whether your computer comes with WI-FI built-in; the latest crop of laptop computers in particular come with WI-FI already built-in, the service just needs to be turned on. I would also say that just because there is an app for Windows 10 doesn't mean that Window-Eyes or another screen reader will be able to help you work with it. Take your time. RE: Making the leap to Windows Ten!
Hi Chris, Thanks so much for the information about updating my iPhone for the best results from the Alexa app. You give me hope. Now I know why it doesn't work well and I can't go to the next page easily. Also, since my husband is a computer IT guy, I think that he will be able to update it to Windows 10 for me. That is, when he has time. You know that old saying about the cobbler's children, Smile. After it is installed, I will go from there. Hi. In my experience, going directly from Windows 7 to 10 has not yielded the best results. Lots of people have trouble when doing the upgrade. Have no fear, though. If you're having trouble with the Alexa app on your iPhone, you'll need to upgrade to iOS 9.3.2 which is the latest version. You should then be able to access most things, although admittedly I'm having trouble accessing some of the sounds Alexa makes when asking a question. It simply will not work no matter what screenreader I'm using. It should be fixed in the next firmware update, though. Trust me there are workarounds for this. I also do have to say, though that I have a brand new Windows 10 machine here and it is running extremely smooth indeed. sSo if you're going to get Windows 10, it is best to get it on a brand new computer. Re: Making the leap to Windows Ten!
You may need to upgrade to IE11, if you're only using WE9.0, this mayalso pose compatibility issues as well. The Echo is supposed to be downward compatible to Windows Seven. Therefore, prior to upgrading to Windows Ten, be certain to review the system requirements and other specifications for the Echo. - Original Message - From: "Butch Bussen via Talk" <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> To: "Paulette Vickery" <paule...@evickery.com>; "Window-Eyes Discussion List" <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2016 9:26 AM Subject: Re: Making the leap to Windows Ten! Re: Making the leap to Windows Ten!
RE: windows ten question.
You may need to go to the computer manufacturer and see if they have any updated drivers for your wifi adapter. I had a problem with a tablet where it would drop the wifi all of the time and it turned out to be outdated drivers. It is possible your Windows 10 installed some generic drivers for the card bringing the issue out. Good luck. I have the same question.i hope that AI Squared can have some good tutorials on what is new and how things now work with windows 10 and window eyes and zoom text once most of us get our update notification to update to windows 10. I got mine last night and I follow exactly the instructiosn that doug had posted a week ago on how to go about the windows 10 upgrade. I follow the instructions and the upgrade went very smoothly. Hi, When I called to order the SMASTUPGRADE (including 9.2), I spent the extra $20 to get a COULD copy. I have more than one computer and thought that the wisest way to go. I'm glad to know tI must have 9.2 running when upgrading a Windows 7 machine.
