Re: [OSM-legal-talk] Proper attribution on mobile map?
Hi, Under a sensible license, it would be fine to include information about the data license as part of the software license displayed by the installer. It's always the same story; the license text says that (quote on) You must keep intact all copyright notices for the Work and give the Original Author credit reasonable to the medium or means You are utilizing by conveying the name (or pseudonym if applicable) of the Original Author if supplied; the title of the Work if supplied; to the extent reasonably practicable, the Uniform Resource Identifier, if any, that Licensor specifies to be associated with the Work, unless such URI does not refer to the copyright notice or licensing information for the Work; and in the case of a Derivative Work, a credit identifying the use of the Work in the Derivative Work (e.g., French translation of the Work by Original Author, or Screenplay based on original Work by Original Author). (end quote) It all depends on what is thought to be 'reasonable to the medium'. Most of all, it isn't even in the Foundation's powers to define what is reasonable for a certain medium - the licensor of OSM data is not the foundation, but you and me and the other mappers, each of whom might have a different idea. And with these words I hand over to Richard F who will tell you how all this is hoped to improve in the future :-) Bye Frederik -- Frederik Ramm ## eMail [EMAIL PROTECTED] ## N49°00'09 E008°23'33 ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/legal-talk

Chris Hill wrote: Leaving the namespace issue aside, how would one collect the information about climbing routes? The routes I climbed didn't have signs or the like to gather from the site. All of the climbing guides I have that describe the routes, including their name, grade, number of pitches etc are copyright. Are there copyright free sources of this information? The information I put on the one route I've done so far came from common knowledge amongst the local climbers. Of course the local guide book also contains the same information, also gleaned from common knowledge so it is a rather fuzzy issue when you start to question where the original information came from, whether it can even be copyrighted by anyone, etc. I don't think the problem is a lot different to normal mapping though - if you ask someone what is that road called (maybe it doesn't have a road sign) and they tell you, you have no idea if they previously read it off a map, or if the Ordnance Survey asked the same people the same question (thus their map contains the same data), etc. Seems a difficult question - at what point does copyright end and common/local knowledge begin? Some of the information is hard fact though - if you've climbed a route then you can estimate its length, etc. -- - Steve xmpp:[EMAIL PROTECTED] sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.nexusuk.org/ Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum - Whisper, Evanescence ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

Street names are generally hard fact - there is some government database somewhere saying what it is called, there are signs up with the name on, signs with access restrictions (one way, etc). On the other hand, on a rock face there are no signs - things can become much more subjective. Climbing (difficulty) grades, for example, are estimates - there is no hard fast rule about what makes a route a specific grade. 2008/4/26 Charles Basenga Kiyanda [EMAIL PROTECTED]: This is slightly off-topic, but does anyone have a trick to deal with the gps when tagging while hiking trails? I carry a garmin etrex legend Cx (unfortunately not the H version) and I find that it has to be looking directly up and flat to get best reception. Especially around here with often good tree cover and canyons. I'm just wondering if other hikers have found something to remedy that problem. I'm always using hiking poles when on the trail, so I was thinking about something that would look like an arm-band mounted pouch that I could strap to one of my forearm, since they stay pretty level constantly during the hike. Maybe a backpack mounted option? I'm fishing for ideas here. I've tried every possible permutation of having the gps stick out of one of my pockets on pants(trousers)/coat/etc to no avail. Just for reference, I'm in the southwest USA and my main source of hiking gear is REI and Amazon. Thanks in advance, Charles When its cold I tuck my eTrex Legend (old BW) into the rim of my hat, and seems to give it a pretty much all round view. I haven't tried something similar when not wearing a hat mainly because I now that in tree cover you really do have to be watching the unit to ensure its locked on and be prepared to stop at bits of clearing to keep a reasonable trace. I guess if I had my hands full with poles etc I would just have to put up with not seeing it and place it on the top (outside) of my backpack. I can't help noticing that the registration fee has doubled from £25 last year to £50 this year (and that's comparing last year's normal price to this year's early bird). What is the reason behind that? Is Limerick so much more expensive than Manchester? Have we doubled the amount of food available per person? Has this year's conference attracted significantly less sponsor money than last year's? Has last year's conference ended in a financial disaster for the organisers? Or wishful_thinkingare we now paying our speakers?/wishful_thinking I don't doubt that even at £50 the conference is excellent value for money. Re: [Talk-de] Api down?
Ja, API ist down.
