[OSM-legal-talk] How much credits are needed?

2009-02-10 Thread Roeland Douma
Good evening,

I am talking with a local television station to use OpenStreetMap maps on
their website and even on tv. To show where certain news events have occurred.

They are asking me about the legal stuff and credits. So I have some
questions:

- When creating mash-ups of the data no data has to be send back to
openstreetmap right? With mash-ups I mean little balloons that link to news
events. They probably won't mind sending it back but it is not of any value to
use I assume.

- Of course when they add ways etc the data has to come back our way.

- When they embed Openstreetmap maps on their website I assume a line with:
"data by openstreetmap" will be enough?

- The same for map shown on television. "Data by openstreetmap (c)" at the
bottom of the picture is enough?

I am not really into the legal aspect of OSM so I figured I would better
check.

Cheers,
--Roeland

I should have announced it, but you all know now :)

The tile server is currently importing the hourly diffs and it seems to
be operating well. I want to start using the new tile expiry code in
osm2pgsql and then I'll move over to importing the minutely updates.

There may be some cases which don't work correctly when applied as a
diff so I'll still run a weekly import each Wednesday.

Actually I have a search for openstreetmap in TweetDeck
Alternatively see the same tweets at:

Because it hasn't been mentioned there ;-) Both Shaun and Steve
mentioned it in their feeds though.

I don't see any mention on there about a more-frequently updated Mapnik

And then they said back in 2007 that adding a forum to OSM's already
large list of communication channels was confusing and too much for
everyone to follow. Now there is some Twitter channel(s?) that we also
need to read to keep updated? What's wrong with opengeodata or the wiki
pages or the mailinglists for spreading the news?

(Yes, I'm delibrately using the same arguments that were used against
the forum now too)

BTW, Where can we find that channel? The wiki does not have a clue...

You've obviously not been paying attention to twitter, there has been
quite a few people commenting on the more frequent updates there for a
few days now.

Took a while for anyone to comment hey? This is a big
improvement which
I think will help massively with getting new mappers hooked on
the
project. We should sing it from the rooftops ...but I
understand Jon
Burgess and others are monitoring it to see if the tile server
keeps up
with it OK. Hope the change sticks!

Lol, yes, we thought it was the traditional Wednesday process struggling for
days and days all the way into the weekend!!
Thanks Jon & co.
