Re: [OSM-talk] how are runways related to an airport/aerodrome

2009-06-22 Thread Madhav Vodnala
This is a good idea. Is ICAO code same as the airport code as identified by
US DOT?.US DOT provides a lot of useful information on the world airports.
http://www.transtats.bts.gov/DL_SelectFields.asp?Table_ID=288&DB_Short_Name=Aviation%20Support%20Tables

"relation" definitely seems unnecessary here.

That data is probably very acceptable for OSM use, and the military
probably took care to take good aerial photography.

Ah! Well, of course you should talk in Vietnamese! You can plan
around the mapping party well enough. To keep the list's momentum
going, talk about real-world things, like State of the Map (e.g. the
Vietnamese guy who's going on a grant), or suggest that people join
the OpenStreetMap Foundation, or post notes about the mapping you're
doing, or anything about Vietnamese maps that anybody else is working
on. The best way to keep a list going is to import information.
Otherwise the list descends into silence, or worse, introspective meta-
discussion.

I met a guy this weekend at a bike shop (Bikes @ Vienna); an older
black fellow. His ears perked up when he heard me talk about
mapping. Turns out that he was in the Navy during the Vietnam War,
and was a photointerpreter. The US military had zero maps of Vietnam,
and had to make them by overflying the entire country (which must have
been ... entertaining ), and tracing the photos just like we're
doing now.

I wonder if you could get those photos or even the maps via a FOIA
request?

I totally agree, I think that is one of the reasons the Brazilian
community have become more active lately. For small communities with
other languages than English, anything that helps reduce the barrier
for new people are welcome. The Brazilian community works hard now on
translating vital parts of the wiki and the most used programs to
Brazilian Portuguese, all to help more Brazilians getting involved. If
a talk-vi can do the same for Vietnam, than go ahead. The project goal
is not to limit communication, but to make the best free online map
ever.

I know it's a devil of a balancing act, and am hugely grateful that
someone's made as good a job of it as you have already. Maybe it's one of
those instances when someone ought to discreetly shift the town name node to

There's no need for a new relations, that I can see. All the runways
have latitudes and longitudes, as do the airports. Does anyone know of
a runway that belongs to airport A but is closer to airport B? Even if
that was to happen, it could easily be sorted by putting in the
airport perimeters and working out which airport perimeter goes around
the runway in question.

In short: OSM is spatial, not everything needs to be a relation.

Mmmm text ordering. One of my least favourite problems to sort out.

I've generally gone for the principle that all cycling information has
to show up at some point, and in the case you link to it's the node
network numbers that "bump off" the town names. I recently changed
things around so that cycle route "shields" don't take off town names
so it looks like I need to rethink node numbers as well. The problem
is when there is a node number right beside the town name node they
need to swap around at one zoom level or another.

As workaround for this railway=halt sometimes tagged as railway=station but it

Also name for railway=station shown only at zoom 13, while useful to see this
