I applaud your efforts, OSM is good and has the potential to be truly great if
more people thought about what could be done instead of shouting down any ideas
that vary from their own blinkered vision.

I have tried to summarize the ideas that I have been working on in the past
three years.
Lots of though put into this. This is not meant to be a flame or troll
thing, but an honest attempt to bring fresh ideas to the table.

e.g. "host the CC-by-sa data that will be deleted". Although I'm pretty
sure the OSMF's plan for ODbL switch makes it clear the CC-by-sa data will
not be deleted and will remain available.
I will comment on that point in the ideascale and explain it.

I got bored after that.

Hello Hrvoje,

Thank you for contacting the USGS Earth Resources Observation and
Science (EROS) Center.

GeoEye's OrbView-3 satellite was amongst the world's first commercial
satellites to provide high-resolution imagery from space.

USGS EROS received approximately 180,000 OrbView-3 image "segments'. The
data that was delivered by GeoEye was a L1B "Basic Enhanced"
radiometrically corrected format.

It is now available to the general public for download at no charge from
the EarthExplorer site. http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov

Yes, it is public domain. There is no legal requirement for users to
acknowledge or credit USGS as the source for public domain information,
but they may wish to do so as a courtesy. If you wish to acknowledge or
credit USGS as an information source of data or products, use a line of

it comes originally from a private commercial company, whether it was

Subject: OrbView-3 free images?
Primary response: asku...@usgs.gov

Hi

I'm a member of OpenStreetMap community from Croatia. While surfing
I found an article abouth OrbView-3 becoming free: _http://is.gd/_QQ8A
Is that correct, and if yes, what exactly does that mean? Does that mean
free for downloading and viewing, or free for usage as a source? For us
it would mean the right to trace over those images and public those traces.
Searching your web I found _http://is.gd/z0h4Gm_and there is no mention
of OrbView-3 as commercial, but there states "Commercial vendor
licensing may restrict access to imagery, and license restrictions may
vary for each individual image. However, users have the option to
request license upgrades for imagery not currently licensed for their
Federal agency."
So the main question is: What is the licence of OrbView-3? Is it Public
Domain?

Regards,
Hrvoje Bogner

Re: [OSM-talk] CLEANMAP global version

It doesn't change the geometry of objects, but individual tagged nodes
-are- hidden. The US is a special case as you say.

For more detailed information, I would naturally use the OSMI inspector
licence view, or the Garmin map overlays (on the road).

Oh dear, Sydney and Adelaide are goners.
However your CleanMap shows that there is a lot of hope for both
although there is still a massive amount of work to be done.

Since Cleanmap doesn't include any nodes that will be lost, it's more
like looking through way-colored glasses. It also doesn't show any
intermediate edits, which GREATLY minimizes the effect in areas like
the U.S. where most roads started out as imports.

Despite this, you can still see major damage in some areas, such as
South Carolina, where a "bad" mapper split ways to create bridges:

Note all the gaps in the Interstates (motorways).

There are many more Interstates that will apparently revert to
single-carriageway: http://cleanmap.poole.ch/?zoom=7&lat=38.518&lon=-86.5

And damn, look at Los Angeles:
