Some people view the new pages as an improvement. Some don't. There's no
universal opinion.

Is there support for such a partial rollback?
Leaving aside if it's a good idea, to do such a rollback would require
someone coding it. I really doubt any of the people normally involved in
coding on the rails port are interested, and I suspect it's not a
trivial revert.

[OSM-talk] web page element browsing history regression

2014-08-25 Thread Martin Koppenhoefer
It's been some time now that the new web page is deployed, and despite the
overall improvement, the regression for object browsing (tiny part of the
screen is actually useful, map occupies most of the screen but is really not
needed or could be much smaller at least, the current presentation style leads
to scrolling requirement for any slightly more complex object) is still
bothering the users. Also dates and times are not shown any more, instead there
is approximated text like "almost 6 years ago", "12 months ago" etc.

The fact that map data is loaded for every browse page also leads to
significant traffic overhead, eg on mobile or other slow internet connections.

I understand that this is an open source project with volunteer contributions,
but that part actually WAS already functional for years. Would it be possible
to get the old browsing and history pages back, at least until someone comes up
with an improvement?

Is there support for such a partial rollback?

Cheers,
Martin

Sorry but I dont follow you here. After contacting the DWG, you answered me
saying that you were looking at this but that I should contact the list. Then
I addressed this to the list.

Do you say that I am harassing a contributor by addressing the problem to the
list?

Re: [OSM-talk] "Incorrect speed limit" anonymous notes - who is behind that?

2014-08-25 Thread Andreas Vilén
Is the app centering on central Stockholm when the gps on the mobile device
isn't activated?

There have been created probably about 100 notes on the exact same location
in central Stockholm in all kinds of languages, probably by people trying
to report actual errors, but don't realize their gps is deactivated.

Maybe you could stop reports from being sent when the unit's gps is
deactivated?

Since August 2006 seems to have been around the time when coastline
mapping started there probably was hardly any data.

In case this is of interest, the oldest coastline node currently used
seems to be

http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/12183965

mapped as part of a man_made=pier originally. The earliest PGS imported
node still in use apparently is

Hi, Serge:

I appreciate your work in the DWG. I really do.

It's only that I can also understand, at the same time, the worries of
people that are working hard in an area like the ebola one. Some times
you (DWG) can be too busy to deal with all cases of potential vandalism.

As you can figure out, I sent the message before knowing you were
already investigating this issue. I try always to be polite with my
OSM messages asking for information about suspicious or wrong edits.

Good luck and thanks again.

Rafael.

interesting, thanks for posting this. I have two remarks why it seems
missleading for the less informed:
- the coastline is more recent than 2006
- you have kept the external data from natural earth (builtup areas for midzoom)

So actually in 2006 there was even less map than it appears ;-)

Hi, Pierre:

I just sent him/her a message:

Deleting data from the OSM database
Maizenarockz
25 de Agosto de 2014 ás 13:43

Hi:

We have seen that you are deleting information from the OSM database
without any apparent reason. All information is useful, contrary to
what you put in the comments. Your deletions are being specially
harmful for the ongoing efforts in controlling the ebola outbreak in
West Africa.

Before we report this to the OpenStreetMap Data Working Group (OSM
DWG), could you please tell us why are you doing that?

Some of your changesets have been already reverted, but we surely
can't keep loosing time reverting this mess.

Regards,

Rafael Ávila Coya.

I will wait let's say 1 day until s/he answers. In the mean time, I
will try to see what s/he is doing.

Cheers,

Rafael.

Re: [OSM-talk] A new contributor action to be investigated

2014-08-25 Thread Serge Wroclawski
Pierre,

As the DWG person who is already working on this case, we have said
that we are investigating and will take action after our investigation
is complete.

I will not discuss that investigation on this public forum, but you
knew this and decided to send this letter to talk despite this. I am
very saddened by this.

I'm concerned that in response to your mail, there will be a lot of
people harassing this newbie (whether or not his actions in this
matter were correct). This is not a positive response, so please,
instead, let the DWG continue its process.

I'd have thought that in the first instance you were best placed to do
this, since you know what you mapped and why, and you can ask why things
were deleted?

Unless you know what their languages is and that you don't speak it (and
they don't speak yours)?

[OSM-talk] A new contributor action to be investigated

2014-08-25 Thread Pierre Béland

For the Ebola Activation, we have mapped a zone in priority for MSF in
Monrovia. But a new mapper decides to eliminate buildings and roads. A lot of
deletion so far. We are trying to revert for Monrovia. But there are other
deletions around the world.

Could somebody take care of contacting this contributor. And probably some
action will have to be taken from the DWG.

Thanks, here is the map for August 2006:

No point in comparing it to the modern one, I guess.
