Re: [OSM-talk] High-Precision GPS Survey Equipment?

2008-08-25 Thread Alberto Riva
Hi
I use normally a EGNOS/WAAS submeter DGPS, often for OSM mapping. :-)
My DGPS run really well only in optimal conditions (no satellite
obstruction, multipath, etc.), but I observed that the performance in a
urban environment is normally lower than a "normal" bluetooth GPS based on a
Sirf III or a MTK chipset. I think that one of the keys of these cheaper
GPSs are the better sensitivity than the most expensive DGPS, as well as the
algorithm for calculating the position (myDGPS uses also carrier for
decoding the signal).

Re: [OSM-talk] incomplete tags sac_scale

2008-09-03 Thread Alberto Riva
I think it is related also to some problems of tagging with JOSM: in JOSM,
the predefined values for sac_scale are uncorrect tags (in the version I
downloaded 2 weeks ago - I don't know if this problem is now solved)

These paths seem to pertain to mountain_hiking...
Hiking, for me, is like a highway for pedestrians, quite large (but not
enough for a track) and more or less flat or nearly flat.
Mountain_hiking represent a normal path where you must have hiking shoes
and is a "normal" and easy mountain path, also with differences in
altitude.
Demanding_mountain_hiking is when you start to use your hands only because
the terrain is too steep, but you don't climb.

This is the way I'm tagging a lot of mountain paths in the Italian
Dolomites...

yes, but is easy scrambling moderate scrambling (UIAA class II) should
be probably tagged with alpine_hiking.
The big problem is comparing the different national scales. For me, in the
Italian Dolomites, it is easy to apply the sac_scale because reflects more
or less the overall difficulties of all the paths (except for Via Ferrata /
Klettersteig that is currently lacking a tag).
