Re: [talk-au] Use of AIS message as input to OSM

2019-01-04 Thread Arthur Geeson

Hi Graeme,

On receiving the AIS data about half of the messages at my location come
from fixed location beacons that ships are able to receive and then plot
the positions on their display along with their GPS position and the
positions of other vessels.  They are then able to navigate with greater
safety knowing what is around them.  These fixed location beacons I feel
should be also permanently marked on the OSM so that weekend sailors can
use the OSM with more information available.  I presume that these
beacons consist of a pile or buoy fitted with a solar panel, battery and
VHF transmitter with software to control the transmission.  They are of
course situated in suitable locations to assist with navigation.

Hope this helps - Arthur

[talk-au] Use of AIS message as input to OSM

Hi,

I would like to use the position data received from Automatic
Identification System (AIS) messages that are used for navigational aids
for marine ships to plot the position of these piles on the OSM but I am
not sure if this would be copy right information?

Perhaps we could have a 'source - AIS' ?

Looking at the OSM wiki I find that there is a 'man_made - beacon' tag.
Further searching I find there is an OpenSeaMap. I am not sure why we
would need OpenStreetMap and OpenSeaMap should these not be combined?

MarineTraffic.com uses the OpenStreetMap to display the positions of many
thousands of ships around the world based on AIS input.

Is anyone able to help?

Re: [talk-au] MS open maps

2017-12-27 Thread Arthur Geeson

I have been busy doing street names and house numbers for some years:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/-38.09198/144.35883

http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/52.36135/-1.98845

I normally use Potlatch and the address consists of street number and
name, post code and suburb name for each house.  I question if it is
necessary to add the post code and suburb name as these are implicit in
the dwelling location. It does get very repetitive. If these are
required for searching purposes perhaps they could be done using
software on the data base?  I presume it is all stored and taking up
database space?

The ANZAC memorial - Hyde Park, Sydney is tagged as

amenity=public_building
building=yes
name=ANZAC Memorial

I think it should be

historic=monument
tourism=attraction
building=yes
name=ANZAC Memorial

For reference/comparision the Australian War Memorial, Canberra is
tagged (neglecting the name etc.)

on the building;

historic=memorial
tourism=attraction
building=yes

and on a node(yes a separate node inside the building);

historic=memorial
tourism=museum

I think here the 'memorial' should be changed to 'monument' to reflect
the size at least (as per the wiki, memorials being smaller, say the
size of a statue, monuments being larger, say the size of a small
building). And the node could be removed? (Or is there a reason for a
separate node?) Thus tagging the building as

historic=monument
tourism=museum
building=yes

Re: [talk-au] JOSM and losing Bing Hi Res zoom recently

Hi Jason,

I spent the first half of this year using potlatch 3 in Birmingham
England and was always able to get down to Z20 Z21. I came back to
Australia in September and have been stuck on Z19 for Australian mapping
but still get to Z21 in England. I do a lot of houses and buildings and
it is very difficult at the Z19 level as many of the house details are
too close together to enable the two nodes to sit side by side.

I've even looked up the JOSM bug tracker and sat in the JOSM dev chat

it's a localised Bing problem or whether one of you smart people knows
whether something has changed that would cause this issue.

I note that other parts of the globe are not affected as I can view
