 Better late than
never, most of the country is already on Facebook and is the
ideal platform to spread the word. Please join:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/mappingindia/
Lets be as open as possible, and use it to share
stories and events relevant to participatory mapping in the
country. For a lot of new contributors FB will be the first
interaction with the community rather than the mailing list
or forum, which would still host more serious technical
 discussions.
Thanks to Shravan for taking the initiative to
set it up, feel free to ping him or me directly in case you
have some bandwidth to be an admin (only for those who map
actively). Excited to see how this will grow the project
 :)

[Talk-in] Roads classification

2015-03-29 Thread Ravi Kumar

OSM in India helps in making an SDI at any level. Panchayat (village), Block
(Mandal in A.P), Tehasil or District.
Anything to be accepted by Society can go with the accepted way; for example
Roads
If you follow this from the beginning it can easily gain societal confidence,
as the web display can also be in Indian languages.

So crowd-sourcing may do well to follow Indian practices.

Ex: A Village road can be Panchayath road.. and in turn Kucha road(fair weather
road), Metal road etc.
YES this requires knowledge of the area.. and this very list can help.

 Just rendered this
hybrid view of satellite and Indian Railways network data
 from OSM: http://bit.ly/180bL1j
Zoom in for the station names.
To make this, I used the geofabrik India extract
loaded into postgres, then saved the railway data as
shapefiles using QGIS, and then finished the rendering using
Mapbox Studio. Took a total of two hours for the whole
 process.
Next step is to render electrified routes in a
 different color.

 2. An
OSM installation for editing India data.

 Nowhere
on the list has anyone talked about such a separate OSM
installation, so we should probably put that idea to rest
once for all. We are not going to fork the
 database.
 What we
are looking for is just a homepage for OSM customized for
Indian users with our own tiles,  maybe something on the
 lines of http://openstreetmap.us/
 and http://www.openstreetmap.de/karte.html
The boundaries remain a big reason
to have our own tiles. All this takes is changes to the
 stylesheet, not the data itself.

Re: [Talk-in] SoI / DST complain against Google.

2014-12-19 Thread Ravi Kumar
This is a tricky issue, as OSM is used on both sides of a boarder and so,
cannot be easily settled.
http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/Souteast-Asia.pdf
see this and this also shows various types of lines at our boarder.
They display this apology too
The boundaries and names shown and the designations used
on this map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance
by the United Nations.
Dotted line represents approximately the Line of Control
in Jammu and Kashmir agreed upon by India and Pakistan.
The final status of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet been
agreed upon by the parties

Let us request OSM to steer clear of this and leave the boarder alone.. or show
with a similar apology.

 I feel that this problem
cannot be solved just by having a separate
 server for OSM India:

 (A) We would most probably be using
 OpenStreetMap's tile servers which
 use
 planet.osm
 (B) Even if we use our own tile
server, we cannot fork the planet.osm
 file
to just change the borders of India. If we do that, we would
 have
to change the borders every time we
 update planet.osm file.

 The
borders would have to be resolved by consulting with the
 higher
 powers in OSM.

[Talk-in] Societal GIS

2014-06-08 Thread Ravi Kumar
On a summer jaunt at Ooty tried OsmAnd and GpsEssentials for doing some
societal GIS.
Found the Android apps quite good and accurate. Environmentalists and Osmmers
alike can chipin
to make tourism more eco-friendly and heritage oriented.

I see very very slow development for OSM in India. Perhaps we need to
brainstorm for recruiting new members, raising awareness, reaching out to
colleges and universities etc.

We would like to inform you that Web Map Service portal of Survey of India
i.e. www.surveykshan.gov.in is designed keeping in mind that one can view /
print their area of interest / location without purchasing entire map i.e. for
individual use only.
However, for such purpose digital data can be purchased from Survey of India by
duly signing License Agreement / MOU.
I think the second paragraph was a reply to my query about updating place names

Copy right and Free Geospatial data. The very fact that the data is made
public, indicates that
1. The owner wants public to benefit from it.
2. To what extent the benefit should be, is left to the public, and no amount
of policing can really help.

I hope, wisdom will prevail one day and all the data will be available as IFS
(freely downloadable).
After all it is the tax payers money that has got into this.

Copying coordinates is of course plainly wrong without the owner's authority.
However any published data can be used as a reference and as a check. Bing maps
gives us much of the information necessary for mapping, but identification of
features is a separate matter. If the pwd data is being used for reference,
e.g. to confirm highway codes, place names et.c., that should be ok, especially
as the government would be the body to identify and name highways and many
other features. I don't believe the use of names can be copyrighted in any
country.

Re: [Talk-in] need volunteer for OSM workshop

2013-08-07 Thread Ravi Kumar
Hi,
the names are familiar and the area related to Bangalore I think.
Water bodies are the life line and mapping them is very interesting.

1. Pl get in touch with CES, IIS Bangalore, Prof Ramachandra, who has done
pioneering work for water bodies around bangalore using GRASS GIS (an Open
Source GIS).

2. Using JOSM which can work even without an internet connection (once you
download requisite image) for many systems, is recommended.
Using Qgis with OSM plugin is also a good option.
Cheers

Re: [Talk-in] Bangalore Map

2011-08-14 Thread Ravi Kumar
Hi Shastry,
1. You do have a good digitizeable background map on OSM.
2. May be you want more detail.. do it the OSM way and improve it.. to serve
the OSM group to benefit others too.

If the above two points confuse..
1. Do you by any chance mean, hard copy map ??

Or for an advanced user..

2. May be you want a GIS vector layer ( a map in logical terms), with attribute
information

Then
Digitise the line work on OSM -- Import the line work (OSM to your computer)
-- Use any FOSS4G toll like Qgis, GvSig, OpenJUMP to make it a shape file,
with attributes etc..

cheers
Ravi Kumar
