[Talk-in] Roads classification
OSM in India helps in making an SDI at any level. Panchayat (village), Block (Mandal in A.P), Tehasil or District. Anything to be accepted by Society can go with the accepted way; for example Roads If you follow this from the beginning it can easily gain societal confidence, as the web display can also be in Indian languages. So crowd-sourcing may do well to follow Indian practices. Ex: A Village road can be Panchayath road.. and in turn Kucha road(fair weather road), Metal road etc. YES this requires knowledge of the area.. and this very list can help. Re: [Talk-in] SoI / DST complain against Google.
This is a tricky issue, as OSM is used on both sides of a boarder and so, cannot be easily settled. http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/Souteast-Asia.pdf see this and this also shows various types of lines at our boarder. They display this apology too The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations. Dotted line represents approximately the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir agreed upon by India and Pakistan. The final status of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet been agreed upon by the parties Let us request OSM to steer clear of this and leave the boarder alone.. or show with a similar apology. However any published data can be used as a reference and as a check. Bing maps gives us much of the information necessary for mapping, but identification of features is a separate matter. If the pwd data is being used for reference, e.g. to confirm highway codes, place names et.c., that should be ok, especially as the government would be the body to identify and name highways and many other features. I don't believe the use of names can be copyrighted in any country. Re: [Talk-in] need volunteer for OSM workshop
Hi, the names are familiar and the area related to Bangalore I think. Water bodies are the life line and mapping them is very interesting. 1. Pl get in touch with CES, IIS Bangalore, Prof Ramachandra, who has done pioneering work for water bodies around bangalore using GRASS GIS (an Open Source GIS). 2. Using JOSM which can work even without an internet connection (once you download requisite image) for many systems, is recommended. Using Qgis with OSM plugin is also a good option. Re: [Talk-in] Bangalore Map
Hi Shastry, 1. You do have a good digitizeable background map on OSM. 2. May be you want more detail.. do it the OSM way and improve it.. to serve the OSM group to benefit others too. If the above two points confuse.. 1. Do you by any chance mean, hard copy map ?? Or for an advanced user.. 2. May be you want a GIS vector layer ( a map in logical terms), with attribute information Then Digitise the line work on OSM -- Import the line work (OSM to your computer) -- Use any FOSS4G toll like Qgis, GvSig, OpenJUMP to make it a shape file, with attributes etc.. cheers Ravi Kumar From: H.S.Rai hardeep@gmail.com To: talk-in@openstreetmap.org Sent: Saturday, August 13, 2011 3:50 PM Subject: Re: [Talk-in] Bangalore Map On Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 2:48 PM, PRAMOD.Y.V shastry yv.pra...@gmail.com wrote: I would like to know if there is a map available for bangalore on which i can work on.. http://osm.org have map for Bangalore also, included in Map of world.
