[OSM-talk] Thousands of small changesets by Tim Proegler

2009-06-24 Thread S Knox
Does anyone know why Tim Proegler
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/timproegler/edits has made so many small
edits under the name of KMLManager in such a short space of time (1 day as a
member)? The recent changes page was at one point full of his changesets. Is
this legitimate, or a mistake?

Steve

[OSM-talk] Possible new source of data

2008-01-16 Thread S Knox
I have noticed a potential datasource from an article in the Economist about
distributed computing.
http://www.economist.com/printedition/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10202635
More details at
http://www.planetary.org/programs/projects/setiathome/setiathome_20080115.html

A project called [EMAIL PROTECTED] is planning to use volunteers to geocode
roads, rivers and other key features from UNOSAT mapping. Whether or not
OpenStreetMap would be able to use the resulting data or not I don't know, but
at least people on here who might like to help them are aware (not that I'm
trying to get people to leave OSM!).

Also, it is probably the case that people who sign up to an initiative like
this are interested in maps, and if takeups of other distributed computing
projects are anything to go by, it could be a great marketing opportunity for
OSM. Don't know if the project is up and running yet, I can't find any further
info.

[OSM-talk] osm2pgsql.exe

2008-01-22 Thread S Knox
Artem,

Thanks very much for the Windows version of osm2pgsql. It's very fast and I
have successfully used it to to create a Post GIS database. I don't know much
about this, so excuse my ignorance if it is to lengthy to write about, but
could you detail the steps you went through to compile the program for Windows.
I

I am interested in possibly making a slightly customised version of the program
that includes more tags in the database - i.e. not just for Mapnik use.

Many thanks

Steve

[OSM-talk] Cuba maps

2008-03-10 Thread S Knox
I am planning on visiting Cuba in April, and have heard one of the problems
with car hire is that road signs are truly awful. Which gave me the idea to
take a GPS and kill two birds with one stone - use existing data to know
roughly where the roads were and help with naviagation, and also to use the
traces from the GPS to improve the maps for the country.

I have two reservations with this strategy:

1) There is very little current data available. Since most of the Western have
of the island has been recently accidentally deleted along with some other
streets, Cuba looks bare. To remedy this I was planning on importing some VMAP0
or DCW data, no mass import, but just a few roads that might make the map more
useful if I do download it onto a GPS. Does anyone object to this?

2) I'm not sure how a GPS reciever would be percieved in Cuba, particularly at
Customs. I don't think the regime is particularly paranoid about these things,
but bearing in mind history and politics, does anyone have any experience with
their import and use

Any help gratefully appreciated

Steve

[OSM-talk] Mapping with a data logger

2008-03-22 Thread S Knox
Dear All,

I'm going to Cuba in early April, and would like to map some of the roads
there. Unfortunately, I have discovered that GPS equiptment is not permitted
and anything found during searches will be confiscated, or at the very least
impounded until departure.

I have looked into purchasing a data logger, due to it being less conspicuous
and less expensive should it "disappear on departure", however an exhaustive
search of the internet has failed to find anything below about £50, when
delivery to the UK is taken into account. I know that doesn't sound like much,
but it seems a lot to map somewhere when I already have a perfectly good GPS.
Does anyone know of anywhere that I could beg, rent, buy or borrow a low-value
data logging unit? I thought as these are getting much more mainstream,
particularly with businesses, there must be a second hand market, but it would
appear not.

Regards and Happy Easter

Steve

Re: [OSM-talk] osm2pgsql.exe on Win32

2008-05-19 Thread S Knox
Artem,

As a follow up I managed to get Boost Build to work with simple files, but am
stuck with something so complicated as osm2pgsql. I know this is way out of my
depth, as I don't have the expertise to start playing around with compiling
files meant for Linux systems, so I would appreciate any of the files you used
to create the Windows build. By all means go and tell me to get Linux, but I'll
probably wait until I can get one of those decent Asus Eees.

Many thanks for your help

Steve

Hi Steve,
My mail client junked your email - your date/time setting a bit ahead of time ??

Artem,

Thanks very much for the Windows version of osm2pgsql. It's very fast and I
have successfully used it to to create a Post GIS database. I don't know much
about this, so excuse my ignorance if it is to lengthy to write about, but
could you detail the steps you went through to compile the program for Windows.
I
I'm using Boost.Build.v2 and VC++ express for all win32 builds I had to modify
osm2pgsql i.e. getopts was missing on win32 etc etc
Also, I had to compile most of dependencies (geos, libxml, ??) from source to
ensure they are linked to correct runtimes.

My plan is to commit changes + Jamfiles to main osm svn at some point but I'm
short of time at the moment.

I am interested in possibly making a slightly customised version of the program
that includes more tags in the database - i.e. not just for Mapnik use.

Do you want to build it yourself ? I can gather bits and email it to you
(possibly this weekend) Let me know.
Many thanks

Steve

Cheers
Artem

[OSM-talk] Forbes Article on Data Collection for map services

2008-10-13 Thread S Knox
There is an article in Forbes about the increasing lengths data providers are
going to to collect data for mapping.

Link here:
http://www.forbes.com/2008/10/10/gps-navigation-autos-tech-personal-cz_jb_1010nav.html?feed=rss_news

Quote "'I laugh when I hear that
you can make a map by community input alone,' says Tele Atlas founder
De Taeye. He says that if tens of thousands of users travel a road
without complaining, then Tele Atlas can be fairly certain that its map
of the road is correct."

Not sure if that's strictly true, given the quality of some of there maps, but
anyway

Steve

[OSM-talk] Potlatch on Asus EEE 901

2009-01-17 Thread S Knox
Dear All,

Just sharing some experiences on the above. I have to admit that this is the
first time that I've had Linux installed on a computer, so there may be
something I'm missing through lack of experience.

I've got the default Xandros installed with Firefox 2.0.0.14 and Flash 9, and
also Mint Linux 6 with Firefox 3.0.5 and with flash 10. I found that the Mint
Firefox was very slow with Potlatch, and the player kept locking up and having
to refresh the page. It worked slightly better with Xandros, and after some
research I discovered that some people were having a lot of problems with Flash
10 on Linux. This prompted me to downgrade to Flash 9
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb406791 . That
seemed to fix the worst of the problems.

I still find it very slow compared to Windows both on IE 7 and Firefox 3, but
from what I have read that is to be expected. One thing I can't get working on
the EEE is the Yahoo imagery, which is a shame. Does anyone have any ideas - it
seems to be something related to the screen size. I've seen the wiki page at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Eee so will try and update that too.

Best
Steve

[OSM-talk] Tag for "dry river"

2009-04-18 Thread S Knox
Hi,

I've just been doing some mapping in South East Spain (very near Europe's only
desert in fact in Tabernas, Almeria), where there are a lot of riverbeds that
only become rivers very occasionally after heavy rain. An alternate term would
be "wadi" I suppose. A very brief glance around the area shows some normal
rivers, but do we have a tag for dry or seasonal rivers, which could be
rendered using the standard blue dashed line on the map? If not then I'll
propose one. Quite useful as clearly for the majority of the time these rivers
are walkable and even drivable, although I imagine not all have clear paths or
tracks.

Regards
Steve
