Yes but you came to the conclusion that's a bad thing and some how
storing information in the changeset is better...

you can't delete the source tag from historical versions, only the
current version, the source should reflect the last used source of
information.

yes this is important. don't tag nodes if they have no other tags. will just

much better for a simple reason. anyone can delete the source tag form an
object. having it on the changeset is as visible as having it on the object
itself. only history of object will show it. And think about it is it still
the same source if user A uploads a gpx and user B des adjustments with

Yes, you can search (Ctrl+F) for "id:0". This will select all new
objects. Another search term is "modified" which will select every
object that will be uploaded.

I'm not sure if it is useful to tag every single node like this. Maybe
it is enough to put the tags on the ways. ("id:0 type:way")

Btw. you can add a source tag to your changeset in the upload dialog.
But that's more for the record, other users won't see it in the future
unless they query the changeset.

While we're on the subject of JOSM user questions...

Is there a way I can make all my new nodes/ways be given the same value for
source. Like a function that I can set to "OS_OpenData_..." and turn on when
I have a tracing session.
I'm not sure how it should deal with me adjusting locations(or adding nodes
to a way), probably best to just ignore it.

It would be really handy and save me having to remember to add the source
tag everytime.

If you use Linux there are also scripts available, that check
automatically on startup if there is a new version available and
download and install them automatically.

Re: [OSM-talk] Updates for JOSM

2010-04-21 Thread Stephen Hope
When you first start JOSM, it has a loading screen, then it comes up
with a news page.

A few lines into that page, it has a line that tells you what your
version is, what the current stable (tested) version is, and what the
very latest version is. Keep an eye on that, and if the stable
version it higher than your version, you should think about updating.
I'm not sure if there is a mailing list.

Re: [OSM-talk] Updates for JOSM

2010-04-21 Thread Gregory
I think there is a setting in JOSM where you specify how often (number of
days) it checks for a new version. So after X days it gives a pop up (when
you run JOSM) if there is a new version. Or is that just for plugins?
Probably just for plugins actually, as there is technically a new version of
every JOSM every night, though it could contain really untested stuff.

When you launch JOSM and don't open any files, the background is a Message
of the Day and can give the latest news (such as important updates).

I don't have JOSM to hand right now.
