Vespucci does look interesting.
Does it let you add a way just by walking it? The screenshots
suggest you have to walk it then examine the GPS trace and
manually draw the way in top of it.

Sadly its Android-only - so no good for my iPhone or for
Blackberry and WinMo users.
The iD project looks like a better base because it is being
written in Javascript/HTML5, so potentially could be available on
all smartphones + tablets.

Anyway, just wanted to add that I actually quite like the idea of
Facebook integration. Obviously it's not for everyone and should
be very optional. But it would be a great way to raise interest
and possibly draw in new mappers.

2012-07-24 Thread Jo
I wouldn't want Vespucci to draw a way based on a GPS trace. It does one
better: The GPS trace is drawn as a blue line and in the background it
provides Bing tiles (or map tiles, if you'd prefer those).

So a way can be drawn based on a GPS trace combined with aerial imagery.
OK, it's not automatic, but GPS traces on their own are often too
imprecise, as far as I'm concerned (both in cities and in forests). The
other problem is that many more nodes than strictly necessary would be used
to describe the way.

Just my 2 cents,

Polyglot

On social part, I was thinking that the Events listed on the wiki should
also go into the main site.
Following your ideas, an Events near you section?
On the main map could go an overlay with markers signaling an upcoming
event (starting 1 month before for example), so that also non-registered
users could see that and maybe go to a conference or a mapping party [I
contacted an user to explain an edit, and referenced the mapping parties
that we were hosting in Genoa and he didn't hear nothing about that -there
was an article on local newspaper- ].

If there's possibility to create events, an user could have the list What
event I attended, What event is coming near me, Contact the host, and
so on.. There's more users on the map than on the wiki!

Re: [OSM-talk] Very Happy - Looking forward

2012-07-23 Thread Nick Whitelegg

I've often thought of the idea of a Footpath editor which could be used in
the field to automatically add footpaths/bridleways to OSM.

It should be possible to do, though it would rely on connecting to the live API
in the field to both read and write data, to avoid duplication.
As it would be used in the countryside, it would be hoped that the amount of
surrounding OSM data would be small so it wouldn't overload the servers or
require silly amounts of data to be downloaded.

It would have to work something like this:

Work out the bounding box with the surveyor at the centre, say a bounding box
of 100 metres
Get the ways and draw them
Ask user whether they want to survey
If so, start recording GPS track
User stops when required and enters the path type (high level or detailed tags)
Algorithm to automatically simplify GPS track
User selects connection points to existing network (these become first and last
nodes of the new way)
Way is uploaded

What would be nice, and make these sorts of clients easier to develop, would be
API calls to throw a load of lat/lons at the server and have the server
automatically plug it into the existing network by working out what existing
nodes the new way will use, though obviously this would require extra server
power.

Nick

[OSM-talk] Very Happy - Looking forward

2012-07-21 Thread rob . j . nickerson

Hi All,

== Reflection ==

I just want to take a moment to thank the people behind the redaction bot
and contacting/re-mapping efforts. Toward the end of 2009 the members of
OSM Foundation voted in favour of changing the license. This was not done
for the fun of it, but because there was a strong belief that the change
was needed to secure a better long term future for OSM [1][2]. After the
vote there was to be no going back, whether you personally agreed or not.

During the following years many members have worked hard to try and contact
fellow mappers (to seek their agreement to the new licence), to remap areas
where earlier contributors did not agree/could not be contacted and, more
recently to work as hard as possible to ensure that as much data could be
saved as possible. Thank you.

It may be hard to see data being removed, but we need to step back and look
at the bigger picture and thank all those involved in ensuring it goes as
smoothly as possible. By all means feel free to write a lessons learnt
email (of which there are several - visualisation tools not knowing exactly
how the data will be redacted and weak communication being two), but
remember OSM is not a large company with paid staff, it relies on your help
too.

== Looking forward ==

Once the redaction bot has finished there will no doubt be a phase of
improving the map where data has been removed. After this we have a chance
to look forward and develop OSM 2013. Much time has been spent on the
re-licensing and it would be fantastic to keep this momentum going on new
projects. My personal wish-list would be to help expose the map data as
much as possible. Ideas include:

* Provide routing on the front page
* Make it easy to users to view the data (eg clicking a node/way could
bring up data about it - the url and opening hours tags are not visible in
map renders but is very useful to many end users)
* Improve ease of editing (like wheelmap, a simple editor that lets you
amend JUST the tags - name, opening hoursm, url etc..). This could be
linked with my point above.

What's your wish-list?

Regards,
RobJN
