Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Google Maps being praised for removing I-5 colasped bridge quickly
Well, when I did my original edit in that area because of the collapse, somebody had already deleted the small section that collapsed. So, I just added the missing access=no tags on the other ways. Plus, it didn't hurt that I was on my PC already and watching the local 11PM (EDT) news and they mentioned that there was a bridge collapse on an Interstate. -James (rickmastfan67) From: cliff...@snowandsnow.us Date: Mon, 27 May 2013 16:36:44 -0700 CC: talk@openstreetmap.org; talk...@openstreetmap.org Subject: Re: [Talk-us] Google Maps being praised for removing I-5 colasped bridge quickly Let's forget about Google Maps for a moment that give thanks to the contributors who updated I-5 on OpenStreetMap. Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Google Maps being praised for removing I-5 colasped bridge quickly
For the press it's simple: everybody knows Google, Google is 'hot'. Openstreetmap is relatively unknown. So writing about Openstreetmap won't attract a lot of viewers for an article. And I wonder whether the community really wants to see Openstreetmap turn into a big player which attracts a lot of press coverage. That is, I don't read it in OSMF's mission statement: - To make OSM data available for anyone (for editing and in whole). - The data being current. - The data to approach geographic truth (or “ground truth”). - That humans add and curate data. - That the data and responsibility for it belong to all contributors. - To facilitate decision-making in the community where necessary. - To be the ultimate “court” of conflict resolution. Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Google Maps being praised for removing I-5 colasped bridge quickly
Things like these and in general Google/Apple/insert your favorite corporation here-mania really only show how upside down the world is nowadays. Does OSM really want press like that? I'm not sure... true, it would get the word out about OSM but is that the proper way to publicize? I think people don't really care that some bridge was removed or added or whatever, they just see the word Google or Apple in the headline. How did Wikipedia become a household name? I don't know but I'm not sure if it was because they wanted to get silly publicity like this. I would bet it had more to do with the actual content and quality of their project. Of course with Wikipedia it was somehow easier because all of their work gets indexed by search engines and the more links to Wikipedia the better place in search results = automatic publicity to pretty much everyone who uses the internet. Back on topic, I don't think journalists who write those articles/headlines will be interested in OSM any time soon. And that's a good thing in my book. When you search for Vienna or Berlin for example, Wikipedia is the top result. Link to OSM is nowhere to be found (at least on the first 10 pages of search results, after that I gave up looking for it).
