I agree that it has a different meaning in different part of the world. In my hometown you can see the arcades look like this: http://kamizole.blog.lemonde.fr/files/royale11.jpg It is also the case in Tours in France, in the center. As someone mentioned before, the arcade seems to be in use in Italy too. It would be nice to have different people from different countries to chime in so we can ascertain if the usage is right or not. Using colonnade won't help as it is clearly a different kind of structure in the first place. Arcade may be better than colonnade, but arcade is definitely in more common usage in the UK for a pedestrian route through a block with shops on both sides, so it will be slightly misleading. However I suppose the position next to a road makes it clear that it's one-sided. 2009/6/15 Emilie Laffray : > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_(architecture) > However, the articles on wikipedia are pretty poor. +1 (the English one at least, also the 2 last pictures are not typical for what architects call an arcade, but they refer to the commercial habit to describe shopping-centres and passages as arcades, which might be good advertisement but is not correct in terms of construction). > I suspect that > footway=arcade would actually be the best description if I remember > correctly the definition. yes, I agree for the example in the picture, but be careful: if the way is not covered/formed by arches or vaults (round), it is not an arcade (e.g. ancient Greek "stoa"). BTW: you can also find lots of arcades in Bologna, Italy (I guess more than half of the historic center has footways like this). cheers, Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

The arcades are always closed on one side and in ancient Greece, the closed side had shops in it, which is usually not the case with colonnades at all. The example given is pretty good, and it is relatively common in some parts of France. Orleans and Tours would be an other example of what this architecture is all about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_(architecture) However, the articles on wikipedia are pretty poor. I suspect that footway=arcade would actually be the best description if I remember correctly the definition. An arcade usually cuts through a block, rather than running alongside a road. I'd have said colonnade was about right, though they're not exactly common in the UK (the two level shops at Chester spring to mind, but they are probably peculiar to themselves). We do have what can best be described as concrete awnings, eg in Birmingham, but they are stricly functional, and probably best described as something like covered=yes. I'd probably go for footway=colonnade Richard On Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 2:43 PM, Martin Koppenhoefer wrote: > 2009/6/13 Pieren : > > Hi, > > > > someone on the french list asked how we could tag an "archway" ? > > Something like this: > > http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Place_des_Vosges_archway.jpg > > > > I didn't find anything on the wiki or tagwatch. IMHO it could be tagged as footway and for the particular construction you could use a more specific tag (like: way_type or something special). Did you search for archway or for arcade and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonnade as well? The latter 2 are more construction specific (I think, I am not English native though). Note that arcades have "arced" ceiling/construction where colonnades have ususally flat ones (the term concentrates on the columns where arcade focuses on the arcs).
