Someone tagged a lake as:

water = intermittent

Would it be a good idea to tag causeways/fords that rarely have water running
through them this way?

Came across that link looking for something completely different, but anyway
apparently the eeePC has free USB conectors on the motherboard which you can
hack some flash ram or other small usb devices into to increase the capacity or
functionality of the eeePC without having things hang out the side.

He also has a link for double or more capacity batteries.

There seems to be some things that only fit here, like 4wd_only, and platypus'
that will propably not have much use beyond Australia.

If you can show a lot of use for a particular tag it will be more likely to be
added as a formal option, or existing tags modified to take into account some
unique aspect.

There are a lot of highway=ford out there that would probably be better
described as mostly=dry :)

Just add a note to the AU recommendations and deal with it in future.

this is what I was recalling, not to do with commons

The UNEP-WCMC spec specifically says "Temperate broadleaf and mixed" covers
"the sclerophyllous forests of Australia." I would call both the ecucalypts
and eucalyptus broadleaf, the acacia is pretty much a broadlead, and the
mixed allows for most of the other stuff to be

As both Martin and Tom said, add what's needed to the wiki and the renderers
will eventually catch up. I would say starting with the UNEP-WCMC would work
nicely, (though it looks like all Australian forests would be broadly
classified as the same thing--excluding the "sparse trees and parkland" and
"forest plantations") then drilling down to continent/subcontinent specific
forest classifications would work.

and until he visits us and sees what forests we have - Mallee may well be
temperature broadleaf but the canopy doesn't reach 30% -
he will just be talking through his hat.

[talk-au] "Heavy Goods Vehicle"

2009-07-25 Thread Liz
HGV which only goes as far a semi in size, is the max size truck marked on OSM
wiki.
Naturally we have bigger trucks
and they have route restrictions

I've found maps relating to SA here
http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/freight/road/vehicle_configuration/road_train.asp
and to NSW here
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/heavyvehicles/downloads/rav_maps/rav_nsw/rav_nsw_index.pdf
but don't copy anything off the NSW map - i've already found simple mistakes
like the wrong end of the road marked for B-double on our road and streets
with wrong names .
However if anyone wants to map this properly we need new tags that cover the
legal vehicle sizes and their routes and the references above would mean we
know what was the range to be covered.

so 'NR' is unimaginative rendering

Bilbul, NSW has a village common - but i'm not sure just which bit of land it
is so it isn't mapped.

nature_reserve is probably a fine tag from the available choices.

Those Eurocentric guys remind me of the tales of the 18th Century scientists
learning about the playtpus - didn't fit anything they knew, so had to be a
fake.

Town commons, at least in most parts of northern/north-western NSW, were
primarily shared areas people could put their livestock when they lived in
town. Not really a nature reserve at all, although what was the town common
near Inverell was donated to NPWS and turned into a nature reserve.

The town of Tinhga, NSW itself is in the middle of town common, and you cross
cattle grids going in/out of town, and cows walk round the streets.

When looking for something else I found this:

Which replaced srtm2osm apparently, but can be used to convert DEM information
to OSM format, and then you can feed both the OSM data + it into navit format.
