Very well - I'll leave it as living_street.

99.999% of the time you should only use the Map Features page for
specific tags, the Aussie Tagging Guidelines is more to do with
translating from UK/Euro speak into Aussie, rather than defining our
own tags.

streets seem to be common there, but seem fairly rare here. I've
marked one street as living street where pedestrians have more right

[talk-au] highway=living_street - what do people think?

2009-10-15 Thread John Henderson
I've tentatively tagged a couple of streets as living_street, because
that seems the most accurate description in the international map
features guidelines.

They're shown here (no names to be seen yet):

http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-35.23413&lon=149.07783&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF

I note that living_street isn't listed in the Australian tagging
guidelines - hence my query.

These residential streets (between Townsend Pl and Joy Cummings Pl) are
clearly marked as shared vehicle/pedestrian use, and have a 10 km/h
speed limit.

Also of interest is the roundabout to the north (clearly signposted as a
roundabout) but with a single entry/exit point.

It does return multiple matches, but only if the number of matching
attributes is the same. The attributes to match come from the big attrmap
string.

Using routable maps to suggest routes across town is a great way of
finding things that need to be fixed.

There's very little of that in my neck of the woods. And few multi-lane
divided road sections have a lane count specified. I've read that the
"lanes=n" tag on these can influence routing.

There's a lot to be done, all over the place. I'm retired, and have an
older friend who likes to have a weekly drive from Canberra into the
country. We take his SUV, and he appreciates making a positive
contribution by seeking out and mapping a couple of new roads each trip.

He has a Garmin GPS in his car, and finds the OSM maps I provide him
much more accurate than the official Garmin/Sensis maps. These are
often out by hundreds of metres on dirt roads, as well as being out-of-date.

Sometimes I go back alone to do the more tedious "fill in" of roads
which are residential, or don't in the direction we want.

2009-10-15 Thread Nick Hocking
Thanks John, Excellent - it now works.

You were right, Everytime I downloaded the current zip file, I ended up
with a 13.6MB zip file and subsequently a 14MB img file.
I've now saved it to a completely different locations and now I have a
18.5MB zip file and a subsequent 24.7 MB img file that is fully routable.

Thanks, I still don't know what I was doing wrong but I can now show this
to some people at work who are showing a lot of interest, in openstreepmap,
hence my other questions about navit and gosmore.

They were also very interested in whether we had speed limits on all the
roads.

BTW, I like your mapping work around the ACT area. When Liz mentioned that
there were some new divisions near Yass, I thought,... how did I miss them,
and planned to visit them the following Saturday, but you got there first.
Well Done.

There are still some roads between the highway and Yass valley way to be
mapped but I only dive dirt roads these days just prior to a service of my
car so that they can replace all the air filters etc.

Hmm, I'm just in the early stages of browsing the code I got from svn in the

I'm still downloading the planet.bin
I've just compiled the latest svn
The one near Robertson I redrew - the road has moved from the boundary

Next to work out is why the long distance routing is crazy. It might be
related to which roads have speed limits and which don't

Using the latest SVN version of osm2navit, these two and the one near
Robertson NSW seem to turn out right. They're routable roads anyway, I
don't know how admin boundaries affect Navit.

What size is your NSW file? Is it the 18.16MB (or thereabouts) file
from http://osmaustralia.org/garminroute.php

The non-routable files are smaller.

navit has funny long distance routing.
when we have the osm2navit sorted out - our trouble may be solved with the
newest svn version I'll start talking with them about our routing problems.

it may be related to roads not having a max speed specified, for example, and
I need to understand more about the routing algorithms before we can sort out
why one can get sent hundreds of extra kms.

[talk-au] Routable Garmin Maps for NSW

2009-10-15 Thread Nick Hocking
A while back I could download the zip file for NSW from osmaustralia.org,
unzip it rename the img file to gmapsupp.img,
copy it onto the Garmin Nuvi and I would have routable osm maps on the
Garmin,

Recently when I do this the maps are not routable at all and when you try to
set a route, it just sets off "cross country"

Am I doing somnething wrong? Do the overview and TDB files come into it
somehow?
And still, poi searching is fine but street names are not.

PS - is navit useful yet (maybe with some decent voice commands).

I'll have to check out Gosmore as well to see if it has improved voice
commands.

The solution outlined by cp15 (see Liz's earlier message) is to modify
attr_longest_match to return more than just one match when appropriate.

The hard part will be deciding how to determine when more matches should
be returned and what those matches should be. Returning too many matches
will greatly increase the size of the Navit map file, which is obviously
undesirable.
