I wouldn't consider 3 out of 4 of those I listed as nerdy anyway, take for

Found a sunshine coast bush walking clubs, seems to be snail mail only.

There seems to be quite a few 4wd clubs though, one at Nambour, another at
Caloundra and another at Maleny, most only publish snail mail addresses.

I doubt we will be able to get round them all by snail mail in time for the
meeting, so for these groups instead of spending too much time advertising the
current meet-up it might be more pertinent to come up with a different strategy.

On the 15th of August at Nambour there will be an informal social meet-up for
GPS and OpenStreetMap enthusiasts.

Until recently coverage of the Nambour area in OpenStreetMap was non-existent,
so a meeting was proposed to try and rectify the situation.

So why do we do we go to the trouble of making street data when google maps is
free?

There are many free maps on the internet, most of them are only for private use
and must not be re-distributed. They are often not up-to-date, incomplete or
contain errors which are only corrected slowly.

In all those maps you don't have the original data used to create them, only
images of the data. There are all kinds of fantastic things you can do with map
vector data but unfortunately mapping companies usually stifle this kind of
innovation due to restrictive licensing of the data.

OpenStreetMap has people like you and me collecting raw data ourselves, all
over the world. With our own data and software we are independent from
commercial providers. Think of it as the Wikipedia of maps, everybody can take
part.

This is an informal social event, there are no hard and fast rules about what
you can and can't talk about but there will be people on hand if you wish to
ask questions.

Probably needs to include something 4wd specific about how they can map out
their favourite trails and easily share accurate maps of them with all their
friends.

Just a minor note: The tracks in the Glenrock State Recreation Area are closed
to public vehicles so it's more accurate to mention that link in relation to
bushwalking and MTB riding than 4WD'ing. Oh, and they're more detailed than
accurate. It's a shame that the shortlink links are so cryptic. It would be
nice if they were something a bit more user friendly such as a series of digits
but we can't do anything about that.

Also, I think the 5th paragraph would read better if the 2nd sentence read
...stifle this kind of innovation due to restrictive licensing. as the phrase
of the data is used at the end of both sentences in that paragraph.

In the last paragraph giving contact details it's probably better to write in
3rd person rather than 1st. ie: change ...or contact me directly... to ...or
contact John directly

Overall it looks good though. Love the road painting graphic :).

[talk-au] Need help wording flyier

2009-07-31 Thread John Smith

Currently thinking of doing up a simple flier and/or text based email to send
out to clubs/user groups in and around the sunshine coast to promote the
mapping party to those that may not be aware of OSM, or may have seen the map
when it was a blank canvas, or to just generate some interest in OSM even if
people may not be able to attend on the day.

I just realised that 2 weeks away was probably a little soon to do this kind of
promotional type work but oh well thems the breaks.

Also I've sent off for a quote on a vinyl sign I can stick up so I don't look a
complete dork waiting round in maccas for everyone to figure out where everyone
is :) There is a couple of places around Gympie that do signs, otherwise there
is always plenty of businesses on the Sunshine Coast next week I can ring round.

In any case help with a flier would be nice :)

Yup, but I've sort of have 2 conflicting goals here, on one hand I need to
explain what OSM is, on the other I need to tell them that there is a mapping
party in Nambour on the 15th in the most terse way possible, so that people
will actually read it.

I pieced together the following, but it is much too verbose at present.

===

We would like to bring to your attention, an informal social meetup for GPS and

Would love to, the trouble is lesser nerdy groups don't always have web pages.
However once something is more or less fomralised I'll try to hunt down some
outdoorsy groups to mail off to as well.
