Subject: [Talk-in] So much to do, have so much of time, but lack direction :
please help

I used to frequent this list while I was trying to map my native place, but
that was way back, and since then I've been mostly embroiled in a lot of issues
regarding disposing off that place and focusing on my commercial engagements
and day-to-day activities.
I'm now done with everything, including taking an almost month-long break, and
would now like to contribute a whole lot of my time and energy towards
furthering work on OSM, especially in Mumbai, India.

Would someone please suggest work/issues to tackle or at least point me to a
page that does?
Would also be nice if I could be guided on the kind of equipment to purchase
for any legwork as I currently only own a x64 laptop (running RHEL Workstation)
and a feature phone.

Thank you.

Can you explain “using street level photos”?  Does it mean taking photos of

Re: [Talk-in] Railway station GPS co-ordinates

2016-06-06 Thread Shibu Narayanan
Hi,

My email with an attachment has not been approved because of the large size.

I have uploaded it to this location
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tnshibu/osm_data_extract/master/data/india_railway_station_list.txt

You can find the GPS co-ordinates of railways stations in India.  The “ref”
refers to the Indian railway station code, I think.

The data extracted is for nodes which have the tags with key=”railway” and
value=”station”.

The extracted data is pipe(‘|’) delimited.

If anyone requires similar data for other tags, let me know, I will try to
extract them and give you.

Hope someone finds this useful.

Sutripta,

All data entered in OSM is ground validated I would assume.  Because it is
entered individually by contributors, my assumption is that a person familiar
with the place is the one who is entering the data to OSM.

Sometime back there was a XML file from IR, but as pointed out by Arun Ganesh,

[Talk-in] POI capture

2016-02-22 Thread Shibu Narayanan
I am interested in creating a simple android app to capture POIs.

I was looking up the XML data structure and found help here
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_XML .

My question is , for a POI, what is the least amount of data which can be
uploaded?

Is the below sufficient?  I can add as many “tag” as required, right?

I see a “user” attribute, is there any password attribute as well?  Can one
user upload data in the name of another user?

Re: [Talk-in] Network/Operator tags for railway systems

2015-11-05 Thread Shibu Narayanan
Hi all,

I have an android phone.

Which are the good apps to capture data for OSM?  I need an offline solution.

I mean, on the field, I don’t have to use internet.  I just keep capturing
place names , etc..

When I get home, I should have the option to enable wifi and "upload" any data
to the osm database.

Any recommendations?

Just checked the existing data and there is not much use of these tags in
India, so it is a good time to propose something we could use in the future. By
default we can consider the railway network of the railways in India to be
Indian Railways, therefore only exceptions need explicit tagging:

Major non IR networks (acronyms preferred), to be used on route relations and
station nodes

`network=DMRC` for Delhi metro
`network=Mumbai Metro`
`network=CMRL` for Chennai metro
`network=BMRC` for Bengaluru metro
`network=JMRC` for Jaipur metro

IR network operators (full name preferred) to be used on objects

`operator=Konkan Railway Corporation`
`operator=Southern Railways`
`operator=Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation`
`operator=Central Railways, Mumbai` for Mumbai division of Central railways

Reference:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_transit_in_India
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zones_and_divisions_of_Indian_Railways

As of now Delhi metro is the biggest non IR network and we can start tagging
the stations and routes if there is no objection to using `network=DMRC`
