other tool more efficient, even a page on the drupal site is
enough...). But I think that the must important step is to have a

very messy and so useless. Maybe we can contact other local community

Also I think that it will be interesting is to have a national meeting

2015-03-05 Thread Pieter Colpaert

Hi all,

Open Knowledge Belgium aims at being an umbrella organisation. That
means that we are doing our uttermost best to do things for you and not
restrict you in any way. You can use our (being you and the other
working groups such as Creative Commons Belgium or Open Acces Belgium)
legal entity as if it was your own through the representatives Ben
Abelshausen and now also Nicolas Pettiaux: they can do financial
transactions and sign paperwork as part of the board of the legal entity.

Feel free to tell everyone that Open Street Map Belgium is an official
organisation and whenever they ask you a registration number, you give
the registration number of Open Knowledge Belgium. That's why we exist.

Having similar goals, I believe we're stronger under one umbrella than
having strong volunteers having to take care of the administrative sides
of running an asbl/vzw.

@Ben: I find the Local Chapter idea a very good idea. Creative Commons
Belgium did the same thing within Creative Commons International.

Kind regards,

Pieter

I agree that in some cases it may be better but with where we are now
we simply don't have enough resources to do this, in volunteers,

What there is now is, in my opinion ok for now. Once we get more

about submitting to become a local chapter of the OSMF. Maybe that

Thanks Ben for the precise and long answer.

Could I have a login (name : npettiaux or npx) on osm.be to start

I think osm.be should be trilingual (en, nl, fr) if not 4 linguals
(german in also a Belgian official language) and native speaker should
translate to their mothe language. I'll help with French.

Thanks again, and keep on mapping,

I would also want this, but in reality I heard that the translation is
the most work, I assume to English would be easy but my German is very
rusty (like non-existing rusty) , Not sure if we have the resources at
this moment. Translations need time.

But idealistically it's perfect goal to strive for. +1 on that.

Concerning the site, there are still some issues to be solved, last time
Ben and I spoke that was the consensus that somewhat more technical
people could jump in a fix a few things but not limited to technical stuff.

Maybe Ben can elaborate on the todo list ? I would love to help, but
how do we get the ball rolling now ?

Re: [OSM-talk-be] Mapper of the month

2015-03-03 Thread Ben Abelshausen
Hi,

I think this is the first idea that is really working and something that we
are actually continuously managing to do every month apart maybe from the
meetups we started.

Many thanks to Marc G, Marc D Jorieke for making this happen. If it would
have been me alone this would never have worked.

As for the VZW/ASBL:

The structure we have now is more than enough to handle what we are doing.
We can do a LOT more and do things a LOT better but it's still just me. I
keep asking people for help and on this mapper-of-the-month thing this
worked out great but there are lots of initiatives that never get off the
ground because there is nobody to run things or nobody to help.

I'm talking about things that are not mapping here. I think we have proven
that mapping is something we can do and keep doing well. We also managed to
organize the CRAB-import and other mapping-related projects without the
need for any formal structure.

The email about west-vlaanderen and mapping parties for example needs a
different kind of volunteering and got almost no response. I'm not pointing
fingers here, there are no obligations whatsoever when contributing to
OpenStreetMap, we just need to realize that when there are no volunteers
for organizing stuff nothing will get organized. We are a community and we
have to do these things ourselves and together. This opportunity in WVL is
great and I think we should take it.

I think Marc, Marc and Jorieke have shown that with a couple of hours of
work a month a lot can happen. The only hope I have is that with meetups,
OpenBelgium, OSM.be and a mapping party here-and-there we can get more
people involved and we can grow in a better way.

What you can do:

- First of all, keep on mapping! :-)
- Organize a local meetup, there is a lot of potential in Brussels/Ghent!
- Organize a mapping-party (like Nicolas now).
- Ask me If you want to do something extra.
- Put your ideas on talk-be!

Real projects that could use some help:

- Helping Nicolas with the mapping party.
- Website improvements. (!)
- West-Vlaanderen community-contact-person. Still looking for someone
there...
- Communication, for example, weekly OSM and managing the
twitter-account/facebook group a bit better... ;-) Also a FR-speaking
volunteer would help a lot.
- Emailing to your province about the 'Atlas der Buurtwegen'. Will send
another message about this soon.

Happy Mapping!

Jo and Brice (eMerz) are already on my shortlist for upcoming interviews. I
told my story during OpenBelgium in Namur last week :-)

From my side, I try to emphasize the diversity of mappers : young
less-young :-), French Dutch speaking, computer nerds normal people
:-), veterans and perhaps some newbies (I have someone in my mind for that
already)
So far we failed to add female contributors. Jorieke has been refusing to
do it :-(
I had hoped that with the one we contacted for next month this would
change, but unfortunately it seems that it won't work neither :-( (if you
read this, I still hope you would change your mind )
