Re: [OSM-talk-be] OSM introduction
Do you know this person that presented to 'Trage Wegen'? Is he/she on this list? That would be me. A few thing that you should imho take care of while introducing OSM to people that do not know it: * Ask yourself what your public wants (kind of data, mapping uncharted regions, only using the maps...) and stick to that. You can mention the possibilities of OSM but don't give any details of topics they don't care about. E.g. if those people care about mapping jungle roads you can mention that it is possible to add bus stops and create a public transport route planner, but that should be the last word about that. They simply won't care about the relations and everything. * Provide visual examples of the power of OSM. One of the best moments of my presentation was when I showed on a map on my website a track that I made in the Wicklow Mountains a few weeks prior to the presentation. I started with a Google Maps background where the track went through grey void. Then I switched to the OSM background that showed all the paths in the region. No more explanation needed. You could make a similar comparison for an African region where commercial maps are worthless but OSM shows a lot of roads (or even only paths, they are very important in those regions). Also the Haiti project could be of interest to them. I will send you the simple quick-and-dirty presentation that I made. You can use it as a starting point or inspiration. If your public is not very geeky and new to OSM, I think you should stick to the Potlach editor. More information will only confuse them. I think we made a mistake here in Haaltert by introducing them also to JOSM. wouter -- Wie niet in zichzelf gelooft, komt nergens. - Thor Heyerdahl ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

I agree totally with you. Keep it simple for new people and show them Potlach2 for new people (we need them). 2011/8/20 Wouter Hamelinck wouter.hameli...@gmail.com Do you know this person that presented to 'Trage Wegen'? [OSM-talk-be] OSM introduction
Hello, I contacted an organisation doing mapping in some parts of africa (Africa4U http://www.africa4u.eu/ website a bit out of date) and introduced the president of the organisation to OSM. There appears to be a lot of interest now from several participating members to get an introduction session about OSM. My questions: has anyone done something like this already and more specifically is someone interested in organizing this in collaboration with myself. The introduction has to be in Dutch/English I guess. If none of you are interested is there anyone who can introduce only JOSM? I don't have experience with that editor but to me, objectively, it seems the best one for the job... Also an introduction about licence and what sources they can and can't use seems important to me. Even better would be if someone involved with HOT would be present! I don't know exactly how many participants will show up but the ones that will seem pretty enthusiastic about all this... Re: [OSM-talk-be] OSM introduction
Hi Ben, I can certainly help you out with JOSM. Is this meeting to take place somewhere in Belgium? I can do a presentation in English, Dutch or French. Are there people involved with HOT here in Belgium? Will they work all over Africa, or in specific regions? The Openstreetmap project has been presented like this to participants of Trage Wegen in Haaltert a few months ago. The person who did this, did it very well. Completely adapted to newcomers and people who were not very 'computer savvy'. Unfortunately we ran out of time though :-) Jo 2011/8/19 Ben Abelshausen ben.abelshau...@gmail.com Hello, I contacted an organisation doing mapping in some parts of africa (Africa4U http://www.africa4u.eu/ website a bit out of date) and introduced the president of the organisation to OSM. Re: [OSM-talk-be] OSM introduction
Jo, Thanks for the quick reply and your expertise on JOSM will be welcome!! Probably this will take place in Gent! I don't know if there is anyone involved with HOT. I hope to hear the answer here on the list! :-) The meeting will be informative for them, but also for me, getting to know them and hear about their activities. I know they are trying to get some work done in Bukavu ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/?minlon=28.8495676422minlat=-2.5155410862maxlon=28.8695695496maxlat=-2.49554084778) and at some point even had a project when locals went out with gps and paper!! Some of the participants will be completely new and others I think know some basics about GIS in general! Do you know this person that presented to 'Trage Wegen'? Is he/she on this list?
