Re: [Talk-ca] Proposed import: UBC Buildings

2011-02-09 Thread Gregory
Oh brilliant, I'm glad someone is actually doing this. I really pushed for
them to make the data free and then I left and didn't have the mental
capacity/time to do an import.

Hampton Place - I think the road around Sandringham is the only gate I
didn't get past with my GPS, though I'm not sure it was getting great
accuracy when I made a trip round there.

It's obviously great to see the buildings, I made notes on the rest of the
data they have and if it should be imported.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada:British_Columbia:Vancouver/UBC
But you're now in charge of what goes in and what doesn't!

I'm CC'ing imports@ list, just for information. The process sounds fine to
me.

Re: [Talk-ca] Proposed import: UBC Buildings

2011-02-08 Thread Paul Norman
Whoops - sent my reply to myself, not the list

Based on the feedback from local mappers, I did a test into Hampton Place,
where there were no buildings before. This can be seen at
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.257597
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.257597&lon=-123.234886&zoom=18&layers=
M> &lon=-123.234886&zoom=18&layers=M

A couple of thoughts

The roads here need verification. I didn't touch them except to get their
positioning right, but they need checking for names, access, etc.

Some buildings that are in the shapefile didn't make it through ogr2osm. The
shapefile has a number of buildings with invalid geometries that it doesn't
like.

A site survey is needed to do addr:* data, but I find this a lot easier to
do when I can print a map that has buildings and then write in each building
the details.

Subject: [Talk-ca] Proposed import: UBC Buildings

I'm proposing to import the UBC buildings, available at
http://geodata.plantops.ubc.ca/data/OSM_Feb2011.zip

This import will be done carefully, comparing imported data with existing
data by hand, and may involve follow-up site surveys in case of conflicting
keys.

Legal:

The data is dual-licensed as CC-BY-SA and ODbl by UBC.

Tagging:

Buildings will be tagged with building=yes, name=(value of name_at),
ubc:building_num=(value of number), source=UBC Plant Ops 2011

Data quality:

The data agrees with bing aerial imagery, GPS traces, and BC Government
Openmaps imagery within the resolution of the imagery, after correcting for
building lean in the imagery.

The data is of *ground* level building outlines. The many overpasses will be
dealt with in the import process.

Import process:

The buildings will be compared with existing OSM data, and the way which
better represents the building will be kept. Tags will be merged, with any
conflicts followed up by a site survey as there are some disagreements about
names of minor buildings. Existing building entrances nodes will be merged
onto any new buildings, as with any connecting ways. It's a lot of work, but
the only way to get an import like this right.

Imports will be done from pnorman_imports
