I presume that's on the list because that is where the Alpine Bikes
head office is (Alpine Bikes are owned by Tiso). And presumably where
their mail order service / warehouse is based.

So I think it should be marked as "not found on the ground", because
there's no actual bike shop at that location. Plus add a note to
explain this.
You could also tag it as something like office=bicycle, as suggested
elsewhere in this thread.

I know that Alpine Bikes do have bike shops within Tiso shops in
Glasgow and Inverness (which should be mapped as shop=bicycle), but I
don't think that's the case in Leith.

I was just looking at the Tiso website and noticed they had a link to
Alpine Bikes, so that makes sense. Interesting google maps incorrectly
show an alpine bikes in that area.

I would tend to agree that there aren't bikes in that store, so I've
added Tiso to the map in that location as an outdoor shop and marked as
not found in this location.

Could you add a name search? Moving the map is clumsy.

It's on the todo list. At the moment you can search for cycle shop names using
the full list, and the text search in your browser.

If we add a tag like network=Association of Cycle Traders to the shops, it
would be possible to highlight shops that disappear from future revisions of
this list that may have closed.

I don't know if we are going to be getting updates. It may be possible to get a
separate list of shops that have been removed from the list, however I would
recommend doing a ground survey to verify that the shop has closed, as it may
just be that they are no longer a member of the Association of Cycle Traders.
At this stage the tool will need to be made more advanced.

Is anyone pointing out to Halfords that other bicycle shops are going into OSM
and would they like to follow?

I'm not aware of anyone who has spoken to Halfords, however it wouldn't
surprise me if they would charge for this information for use by various POI
aggregation companies.

[Talk-GB] Naptan (was: 27,000 street lights in one council area)

Is that still happening?
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/NaPTAN/Request_for_Import suggests
it's about half-done, and there are a couple of places marked for
imports that haven't happened yet.

(not that I'm particularly fussed about importing bus stops; just
wondered what the story was)

Might I quietly suggest that until the Naptan import is finished (and

that we leave any discussion of importing street lights off the table?

Looks likely given the following on WhatDoTheyKnow.

"Dear Mr Chamberlain

"I can confirm that any permission to re-use the data would need to be
obtained from Ordnance Survey.

"As the data was collected using Ordnance Survey mapping, they would deem
it to be a derived dataset which would be governed under the rules of
the Mapping Services Agreement. That agreement covers use by ourselves
and a third party carrying out work on our behalf under a Contractor's
Agreement, but would not extend beyond this (e.g. it does not cover use
by someone who obtains the data under FOI).
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/street_light_locations_and_refer

However...

The OS has since removed any claims to such derived data. See Ed Parsons
blog:
"The real innovation “Free to use” terms, means that organisations licensing
data for business use, are able to infer the position or create new data
without restrictions as long as the new data is not a direct copy of
an existing feature in the OS product.
http://www.edparsons.com/2010/10/well-done-os-derived-rules-clarified/

So... Possibly someone could do the import again and even request lots more
of the same. Possibly we need a serious 'operation lamppost' and then
Frederik Ramm can have his openstreetlight project working well which he has
dreamed about in the past.

Peter

I wonder whether it may have been these ones in Norfolk:

By the looks of things they've since been removed from OSM.

[Talk-GB] Footpaths mapping party (Midhurst, W sussex) this Saturday, time and venue confirmed

2010-10-12 Thread Nick Whitelegg

Just a quick update on the Midhurst area footpaths mapping party: it is now
almost certain to go ahead, meet at the Old Town Hall Coffee House, Market
Square, Midhurst, W Sussex map (12 miles north of Chichester on the A286) at
9.45am this Saturday 16th. From the internet it looks like this venue is good
but maybe busy, if it is we may move on, my mobile (nickw) is 07950 347717 so
call if you are late and we're not there.

Please sign up on the wiki if you are interested.

Nick

>From the wiki page:

Introduction

This is a mapping party to introduce people to the subtleties of footpath
mapping, fill a few gaps in a generally well-mapped area, and enjoy some nice
countryside!

When

Saturday, 16/10/10

Plan

There are a few streets in the town that need doing, though the main emphasis
will be on filling in the footpaths to the NE and SW of the town, gaps in a
generally well-mapped area. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close
to the South Downs, with an attractive rolling landscape of fields, woods and
heaths, so worth coming for the scenery alone, never mind the mapping!

Schedule

* 0945 - 1030 approx Meet, discuss day
* 1030 - 1800 approx map, possibility of lunch depending on where people go
* 1800 onwards discuss day, drink, meal
