Re: [Talk-GB] Nottingham Pub Meetup restarting
Given that SotM-US has been running over this weekend, there's probably a few of the talks which will be of interest to anyone. So far the one's I think are worth a discussion over a pint are: - Mikel Maron's talk on community. This tweethttp://twitter.com/mikel/status/343500454346518528provides various links. - Samn Bemel Benrud (MapBox designer) on a suggested re-design of the OSM front page. Some mock-ups on Githubhttp://samanpwbb.github.io/osm-redesign/new-osm-slides.html#0 . - Andy Allan on moving mapnik stylesheet to CartoCSS. Lots of hints from Andy about how he thinks the default map might be changed. The port looks pretty much like the current one, try it at http://orm.osm.org/. There was lots of fancy stuff about routing (rhymes with grouting) for cars, and using vectors for rendering, but I didn't find these presentations asking interesting questions about OSM in general. [Talk-GB] SOTM Presentation idea - Council footpath data - comments?
Hi, I'm aiming to submit a couple of presentation ideas before the end of tomorrow and have written up a couple of submissions. However one - perhaps the most interesting - isn't directly OSM related, though it is focused on open council data. The idea is FixMyPaths - a nationwide footpath problem fixing system, API and smartphone app making use of the open council footpath data, rather like FixMyStreet but focusing on rights of way data. I've mentioned this on here a couple of times already. Since it's not to do with OSM data directly would this be appropriate for SOTM? I ask as it might be interesting to some attendees. If not, not to worry - I'll submit my other idea. Thanks, Nick ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
Re: [Talk-GB] SOTM Presentation idea - Council footpath data - comments?
Hi Nick, I went out doing a bit of footpath surveying the other day ended up doing several submissions to the county council website: mainly about missing signage. Also rather irritating was that a couple of paths marked on (a recent) OS map do not exist, so one would want to feedback to them. So I buy strongly into your use case . However, I think the crucial thing is what I have not seen in any council open data and that is not just signage, but stiles, gates etc. As most of these are actually owned by relevant landowners I suspect that OSM is by far-and-away the most likely source for decent information about their location etc. (Modern accessible kissing gates etc excepted as many of these will, at the very least, received subventions from council funds.) So broadly speaking I think this has direct OSM relevance. I think my concern would be that it might be too UK (or even England and Wales) centric for a more general OSM audience. The model elsewhere in Europe AFAIK is that trail marking maintenance is largely carried out by volunteer organisations like the GR and Club Vosgienhttp://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_vosgienfolk in France, the SAW http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schweizer_Wanderwege in Switzerland, and even very local ones, such as the Mythenfreundehttp://www.grossermythen.ch/. I know some clubs in the UK have a long history of both path marking and controlling path status, but I doubt if they have the depth of local knowledge which exists in the continental volunteer organisations. Thats my 2 p; I better get back to doing synopses for my proposed presentation topics. Nick, The more options we have as organisers of SotM, the better. I personally would love to hear more about this (and no doubt will chat to you during one of the breaks).
