[Talk-GB] The Chilterns AONB boundary

2015-12-16 Thread Bob Hawkins
I am a retired cartographer who enjoys extending his connection with and love
of mapping by contributing to OpenStreetMap (OSM). My current project is to
improve Public Rights of Way (PROW) attributes and add their PROW and Chiltern
Society references to ways in OSM. I am concentrating on Oxfordshire and
Buckinghamshire because that is my geographical area. Their local authorities
make available downloads of their Public Rights of Way and I have Ordnance
Survey OpenData civil parish boundary data, too. It would be most useful to
have a digital boundary of the Chilterns AONB. I have searched the internet
and cannot find such a file to download. I communicated with Lucy Murfett,
Planning Officer at Chilterns Conservation Board and received this reply:

Dear Bob,

Thanks for your message and great that you are able to give your time to
improving this map resource. I am attaching an AONB boundary map with an OS
base.

I love using GIS but I’m afraid I am not knowledgeable about how to share
layers or know whether we have permission to do this. Have you tried accessing
the AONB boundary on the Government’s websites:

http://www.magic.gov.uk/ or
https://data.gov.uk/data/map-preview?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geostore.com%2FOGC%2FOGCInterface%3FSERVICE%3DWMS%26UID%3DUDATAGOV2011%26PASSWORD%3Ddatagov2011%26INTERFACE%3DENVIRONMENT%26LC%3D8000&n=55.816&w=-6.236&e=2.072&s=49.943

Neither of these sites seem to offer the opportunity to download a digital
file. I wonder if an OSM user here can help?

Re: [Talk-GB] The Chilterns AONB boundary

2015-12-16 Thread Paul Berry
Bob,

I can't offer any specific advice myself but it might be worthwhile
contacting the original creators of the AONBs that have already been mapped
on OSM to see if they can offer any specific advice on how they came by
their datasets.

Steve_NI
Dashers
UniEagle
jochta

User jochta has mapped the North Wessex Downs AONB which I understand
shares a boundary with the Chilterns AONB so you might start with them :)

Existing AONB relations are here:
http://ra.osmsurround.org/searchRelation?name=aonb

Hope this helps.

Paul Berry

There is a download option for the AONB data in this list of files:

http://www.geostore.com/environment-agency/WebStore?xml=environment-agency/xml/ogcDataDownload.xml

I haven't checked the licensing so cannot make any comment about its
suitability for use in OSM.

I think GIS data for AONB boundaries can be obtained from
http://www.gis.naturalengland.org.uk/ . However, the licence for the
data appears to be based on an old version of the Open Government
Licence (OGL), with an OS-OpenData-Licence style variation insisting
on stronger downstream attribution that OSM can guarantee. IMO this
means we can't use those datasets in OSM at the moment.

However, the reason Natural England have used that licence is almost
certainly because of requirements placed on them by Ordnance Survey.
Ordnance Survey have recently changed for using a customised version
of the OGL to using the OGL version 3.0 un-modified. Thus Natural
England should be able to do the same, at which point we'd be able to
make use of their data sets.

Robert.

2015-12-16 Thread Bob Hawkins
Paul, Jon and Robert
I thank you all for your very prompt and constructive replies. I have
downloaded the AONB boundaries that Jon pointed me to, in both .tab and .shp
format (I am amazed always at what valuable information to hand people have and
the wonderful benefit of forums and mailing lists!). The boundaries seem to be
just what I was looking for. I should make clear: my use of The Chilterns AONB
boundary is for my purpose only to assist the delineation of my area of
interest.

Thanks for making something happen Rob!

So this conference call is TOMORROW at 8pm.

I added those details to the wiki page:

at 8pm

Hi all,

Early this year I published a survey asking about “a UK/GB OpenStreetMap
group”. 101 people filled it in and many contacted me to say they liked the
idea. Encouraged by the this and my local
Mappa Mercia group, we feel the time is right to start the group. To get us
going Wikimedia UK have kindly offered us their teleconference facility for
our first meeting – 8pm on 17th December. I've used teleconferencing facilities
in the past for State of the Map 2013 and find that they work well (no
text/chat facility ensures that there is only one conversation going on - the
one being heard by everyone).

Survey results:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A8rKyKUW0X01n-JEMLwEUT4ktX-7WrxNP03YTkZs6lU/edit#

To get
us going we will need a few people to commit time over the next 6
months. The roles we need are set out below and
we will need to initially fill them and then, once we have a
constitution in place, we will need volunteers to stand for election. These
roles will be needed irrespective of whether decision making lies with the
membership or an elected board.

* Chair – to provide leadership and ensures the group functions properly

* Treasurer – to organise the finances of the group. Initially this will
mean setting up our bank account.

* Secretary/Membership secretary – to keep the register of members up to
date (indeed to set
on up in the first place), to ensure that voting procedures are carried
out in accordance to our agreed policy. There is potential for this to
be two separate roles. We will also need an initial working group to provide
ideas and discussion. This group can also support the
aforementioned roles in small discrete tasks.

Please let me know
if you can help with setting up the group and/or whether you would be
willing to stand for election once the constitution is established. I will
share the telephone
number and login PIN closer to the date.

Best,

Rob

p.s. Busy on 17th December? No worries. Send me you comments and I will make
sure they are shared.

2015-12-16 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi everyone

Calls from a mobile, the number is 0330 336 2206, and the passcode 33224.
Calls will cost the same as a call to an 01 or 02 landline.

Calls from a landline, the number is 0800 22 90 900 (same passcode) which
will be free

Regards

Brian

[Talk-GB] Agenda and Joining details for Today's OpenStreetMap UK/GB telephone meeting

2015-12-16 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi all,

As noted in previous emails to this list, please find the dial in number
for the first UK/GB OpenStreetMap group meeting below.

Brian Prangle has kindly volunteered to help facilitate the first meeting
following on from his Chairmanship of the State of the Map 2013
(Birmingham) group. The following brief agenda has will be followed in the
interest of wanting to deal with bite-sized chunks and to get things
moving, not in wanting to curtail discussion.

*Suggested agenda:*

   - Welcome & Introduction
   - Aims & Objectives
   - Name or project code
   - Volunteers for pre-inauguration working group
   - Volunteers for "officers-elect" and eventually as officers (subject to
election): Chair, Secretary(to include membership admin unless a separate
   role),Treasurer.

Suggested duration 1 hour, but not set in stone.

*Joining details:*
*->Today, Thursday 17th December at 8pm*
This is a telephone conference with the facilities kindly provided by
Wikimedia UK. There are two UK numbers to select from. Shaun informs me
that the the 0800 number should now be free from both landlines and mobiles
but just in case I also include the 03 number. The 03 number costs no more
than a national rate call to a traditional 01 or 02 number and if you have
inclusive minutes as part of your phone/mobile contract then you can use
these on the 03 number.

Numbers and passcode at
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-gb/2015-December/018108.html

*Survey results:*
As a reminder the results of the survey we did earlier this year can be
found at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A8rKyKUW0X01n-JEMLwEUT4ktX-7WrxNP03YTkZs6lU/edit

Hope to hear from many of you today (Thursday) at 8pm.

Regards,
*Rob*
