Robert,

That looks like an interesting addition to your impressive collection of
tools.
Forgive me if I've missed it somewhere, but what do the different colours
represent on the nameless places of worship page?
I will have a look and see if I can resolve any in Scotland over the
festive break.

Cheers, Doanld

Good stuff!

On a slightly related note, I've recently done a bit of an upgrade to
my "Nameless" tool. This flags objects that don't have a name=* tag
when you'd usually expect them too. There's now a page for each tag
combination with a map and list of the nameless objects. The
top-ranked tag combination is amenity=place_of_worship, with around
4,000 instances:
https://osm.mathmos.net/nameless/amenity/place_of_worship . I think a
lot of them may have been armchair-mapped from possibly out of date
maps. So if anyone is at a loose end and fancies trying to work out if
the places of worship listed there are still in use and if so what
their name is, please have a look.

Just out of interest, do we have a consistent tagging scheme for
churches which are officially redundant but are still consecrated and
used for other events as well as occasional worship services?

I'm thinking here mainly of CofE buildings that are now maintained by
the Churches Conservation Trust rather than a local parish or diocese,
although there are some equivalents from other denominations as well.
They're not exactly disused, because they are all usually open to the
public and often host events, including worship services, but they no
longer host regular parish services and have no resident congregation or
assigned priest.

So disused:amenity=place_of_worship seems wrong, to me. I think the
'disused' key is more correct for a former church that is no longer open
to the public or in use at all, either because it's now privately owned
or is functionally derelict. But I'm not sure what would be a better
option for one that is in use but, from a CofE perspective, is
considered redundant.

[Talk-GB] Anglican churches

2020-12-18 Thread Sean Blanchflower
Hi all,
In case anyone's interested I set myself the lockdown project of ensuring
all the active Anglican churches in England are mapped consistently in OSM,
and have gotten as far as I realistically can for the moment.

The net result is that of the 15649 active Anglican churches that I know of
in England, all of them are now in OSM mapped as ways with
building=church;amenity=place_of_worship;religion=christian;denomination=anglican;name=XX
other than...

301 - which don't have a separate building of their own (eg meet in a
school or another church etc)
3 - that I just cannot find the location of

In addition there are many more mapped with various tags (by others) which
are in fact closed or redundant churches. I've been marking them as
disused:amenity=place_of_worship when I come across them, but there are
still many more that I haven't got to. (I may get round to this at some
point)

Also I tried to augment user:Edward 's excellent work in tagging them with
their Wikidata ID. Currently 12373 of the 15649 have Wikidata tags, with
each of the Wikidata entries in turn having achurchnearyou.com IDs (the
Church of England's own tagging). My effort will probably shift to adding
Wikidata pages for the remaining churches, and augmenting them with further
info.

I've always been intrigued by this
, and wonder if it falls into
this category.

I dont think I've mapped it, largely for want of a suitable tag.

That isn't a tag that anyone else has used -
https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/11jU finds only the one that you've added
recently.  Having said that, when I looked at "historic" usage in the UK

When I looked at vent shaft mapping in the UK a while back I came up
with this list:

These are physically very different features (though sharing some of the

"ventilation_shaft" I'd definitely also add
"ventilation_shaft=stink_pipe" or similar to make it clear that you're

Nice one Ed. Great to get a local civic society interested too. Can't
comment on the tag, but you could also suggest to them: a) an Overpass
Turbo query they could use to generate a map, take a screenshot, and
display on their web site for free (with appropriate attribution), b) add
the photos to Wikimedia Commons and reference them from the OSM nodes.
