Re: [Talk-GB] UK Bike Shop dataset obtained: please merge in locations in your area

2010-10-12 Thread Chris Fleming

Quick question on this what are poeple doing with this data in cases
where a shop is showing correctly in the list and is on the ground but
isn't really a bike shop?

The example I found is TISO:
http://shaunmcdonald.dev.openstreetmap.org/bike-shop-locator/shop/2549

Which is an outdoor shop, but you would be disappointed if you turned up
looking for an inner tube.

Could you add a name search? Moving the map is clumsy.

It's on the todo list. At the moment you can search for cycle shop names using
the full list, and the text search in your browser.

If we add a tag like network=Association of Cycle Traders to the shops, it
would be possible to highlight shops that disappear from future revisions of
this list that may have closed.

I don't know if we are going to be getting updates. It may be possible to get a
separate list of shops that have been removed from the list, however I would
recommend doing a ground survey to verify that the shop has closed, as it may
just be that they are no longer a member of the Association of Cycle Traders.
At this stage the tool will need to be made more advanced.

Is anyone pointing out to Halfords that other bicycle shops are going into OSM
and would they like to follow?

I'm not aware of anyone who has spoken to Halfords, however it wouldn't
surprise me if they would charge for this information for use by various POI
aggregation companies.

I presume that's on the list because that is where the Alpine Bikes head
office is (Alpine Bikes are owned by Tiso). And presumably where their
mail order service / warehouse is based.

So I think it should be marked as not found on the ground, because
there's no actual bike shop at that location. Plus add a note to explain
this.
You could also tag it as something like office=bicycle, as suggested
elsewhere in this thread.

I know that Alpine Bikes do have bike shops within Tiso shops in Glasgow
and Inverness (which should be mapped as shop=bicycle), but I don't
think that's the case in Leith.

http://shaunmcdonald.dev.openstreetmap.org/bike-shop-locator/

Effectively it has a map of locations not yet reconciled, i.e. a
checklist. Click on each location, and you'll then have a direct link to
the relevant bit of OSM where the shop can be added/updated/removed using
personal knowledge. Once that's done, it can be ticked off back in the
webapp.

The new Bike Hub iPhone app, which includes a bike shop finder has just
gone live*, so there is even more reason now to get the remaining locations
into OSM.

At present the data received by the app is coming from a local copy of the
ACT data held on the CycleStreets server and exposed through our places.xml
API. However, I am very keen to reroute this internally to using OSM
proper, as soon as most of the shops are in OSM.

So please do go to:

http://shaunmcdonald.dev.openstreetmap.org/bike-shop-locator/

and merge in the remaining data or check off ones that are already in OSM.

Shaun has made some further usability improvements to the webapp which
makes the steps required clearer.

A node or a closed way should both work. If a closed way does not work,
then that bit of software ideally needs to be updated.

The one near here that I think is similar advertises their address
on their website, but it looks like a house. When I went to double
check it at lunchtime, I was fortunate enough to spot a transit
labelled with the company name on the back, so followed it. It looks
from photos on their website that the business may be based in their
garage, and the van I was following pulled up in front of one (I
couldn't stop as I would have been late collecting my son from
nursery).

For now, I've tagged the house address as
building=house/addr:housenumber=97/office=bicycle/name=Tendring
Bicycles (though if I were tagging for Mapnik rendered layer I'd be
very tempted to tag office:name to make the name less obvious than
the housenumber). Oh, and I added a url tag to the page on their
website containing the address.

 postcode-level
 accuracy only but that's a massive head-start.

I wish I'd realised that before heading off earlier. I mapped the
section of the street where the dot appeared, but checking the
business address when I got back I hadn't mapped far enough down the
street. I still suspect it is someone working from the garage, as I
stopped where the speed limit dropped from 30 to 20 and there were
no signs of any shops. Ah - just seen Richard's email, so suspect
this company may be similar (although it has the address on the
website, invites you to call in, etc. I'll just have to go back and
find out).

Effectively it has a map of locations not yet reconciled, i.e.

more done...
