I've tried to add as much detail to the map as possible:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.2258lon=-2.88111zoom=17

It looks great.. I've started recently trying to do something similar
(remotely) for the Wildlife Park on the Isle of Man
(http://osm.org/go/evGwiGNLr- ), but it's difficult without having
been there for a while. So, I went out yesterday to start doing London
Zoo (though without actually going in), which could really benefit
from someone wanting to pay £18 to go in and map for an afternoon :)

http://osm.org/go/euu4T5yf

Is there really a bridleway right through the middle? Doesn't that play
havock with the paying to get in?

There is indeed! It's kept completely separate from the zoo though by walls
on both sides. It's crossed by two bridges and the monorail.

I wonder if it would actually make it clearer in this situation to
break the zoo into two, so it's clear that the path isn't a part of
it? I've done that with London Zoo which has a road, canal and
tow-path running through it at various points, and is connected using
bridges and a tunnel (or two?).

Howletts, and Portlympye in Kent also have foot paths ways going
through the middle, Its seams to be quite common. Howletts has a
bridge over the zoo path with a bell for people unable to use the
bridge (so they can be escorted through the part in the zoo)

I have no plans to go and micro-map these at the moment.

Nice. And a miniature railway too! The layout looks a little odd though
(three separate tracks - I presume they're all linked together?). It'd be
nice to add some enclosures too.

There are apparently two or three different gauges running, with the
inner part of the middle loop on one and another running around the
length of the circuit outside that loop. They all link up though
apparently. I've just added a relation for them all as well. Next time
I'm home I'll try to add some more info, unless I can get permission
to use details from their own map.

I almost went to London Zoo yesterday, but ended up going paintballing (it
was a friend's birthday do).  I'm sure there are some London folk out there
who could be persuaded to go and map it though... (I might even offer to
 contribute to the entrance fee).

Hopefully :)

Good idea - I've just done this. (see http://osm.org/go/eufvD4GO) Not sure
how big the gap between the two halves should be - I've just guesstimated
it.  I've also added both 'sides' of the zoo to a 'site' relation (see
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relations/Proposed/Site), so that tags
can be shared between them, but I'm not sure how well this is supported in
 the renderers at the moment.

Ah, thanks for the pointer to the site relation.

Cheers,

Looks good. From a view of pedestrian routing, are all entries and exits
past the building labelled main entrance? Could the path perhaps be extended
to the parking aisle to make clear that it is the way in, maybe? Perhaps
with barrier=gate or similar if appropriate on the node where you pay? (I’ve
not checked to see whether such is there already to be honest)

I've now added http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/40125672, is that
what you meant? (not sure if this path should extend through the building or
not - it's actually more of a covered turnstile.

You also reminded me that there's a separate pedestrian entrance here:

Thanks, didn't know about this tag!

You mentioned geometry, I would suggest you look at JOSM. there is a tool
that looks like a set square that helps keep areas at right angles.

Ah, I can't cope with JOSM - wish there was a way of doing this in Potlatch
(which does have a button for drawing neat circles).

You may like also to play around with

 landuse=forrest
 landuse=grass
 natural=wetland
 natural=scrub
 amenity=toilets
 amenity=shelter

Good ideas, thanks.

It looks really good, I always think that mapping areas like this in detail
gives the map much more life. I'm sure the zoo will be very pleased.

I hope so too! I might customise the map slightly by adding animal icons
(if I can find a nice set of pictograms). I've added animal=* tags, but I
suspect it's a bit much to ask for support for these in Mapnik at the
moment...

I've also just experimented by adding barrier=fence to the outer boundary (I
guess this should really be added to the two separate halves of the zoo
instead), so I'm looking forward to seeing how that renders...

Subject: [Talk-GB] Chester Zoo: feedback requested

Hi all,

I visited Chester Zoo a few weeks back, took my GPS, and spent an
exhausting few hours walking along every path (as well as looking at a few of
the animals).

Using a combination of the GPS traces and the Yahoo satellite
photography, I've tried to add as much detail to the map as possible:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.2258lon=-2.88111zoom=17

It's not 'complete', but I think I've done as much as I can without
returning to do some more detailed surveying.

Would appreciate any feedback (on the tagging or the geometry). There's
some interesting use of tags, including animal=* (which was discussed on the
main mailing list a few months back, but which I don't think has even been
formally proposed), as well as natural=mud for the elephant enclosure (it's not
natural, but it's definitely muddy), and a mixture of islands, navigable and
non-navigable canals.

I have a contact who works at the zoo, so I'm aiming to get the map as
complete as possible, and then to send them a colour print of it as a gift.

So, any help would be gratefully received!

Frankie

P.S The zoo is a great place to visit, if anyone fancies a day out...
Don't miss the baby giraffe!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the speedy response!

Is there really a bridleway right through the middle? Doesn't that play
havock with the paying to get in?

There is indeed! It's kept completely separate from the zoo though by walls
on both sides. It's crossed by two bridges and the monorail.

Tagging of 2 islands needs looking at: Lemur Island and one in Flamingo
 Lake

I've just removed the one in Flamingo lake. From memory, it's partly
submerged, and very muddy! Not sure how best to tag this.

Generally, I've not been sure how to tag the islands (there are lots of
them). Some of them are in man-made lakes (which I've tagged natural=water),
whereas others are just surrounded by water on 1-3 sides (which I've added
as non-navigable canals). The actual islands are sometimes wooded
(natural=wood?), sometimes mud, and sometimes more like grass or plains...

Are there really three things called Lemur Island?

Actually, I think there's only one that's called 'Lemur Island' on the map,
but there are indeed three islands with Lemurs on them (different
species/sexes, I guess).

You could experiment with using barrier=fence. I presume the collected
Monkey bits have a fence round them?

Yep. Actually, there are a lot of fences. I've experimented with areas
tagged zoo=enclosure for a few bits, but that's a completely new invention
(I think).

Cheers,

Frankie
