Mike, thanks for the suggestions. The Wheatsheaf looks nice and very well located with plenty of white space around it. I updated the Mappa Mercia page [1] with the details for the next social and added a cake. So, the next social will be in the Wheatsheaf in West Bromwich on September 3rd at 7pm (mapping) or 8ish (pub). Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Mapping the University of Birmingham
Hi Eike, I experienced similar problems when I tried to collect traces on campus. For some reason it seems to be really difficult to get a decent fix there even when one is standing in the middle of Chancellor's Court with a very clear view of the sky. You could try to begin your trace before you enter the campus so that your gps device has a chance to get a decent fix. I also sometimes have the impression that accuracy differs depending on the time of day with the afternoons being particularly bad at Birmingham University (I do not know if there is any sane explanation for this it is just an impression I got). Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Mapping the University of Birmingham
Hi, It is difficult, but possible. Both me and Christoph have tried to map bits of the campus. I found that I had to do it in a half traditional - half technical manner. The attached picture explains it better. Each X is a waypoint, taken a distance away from the building in an area you get better GPS accuracy. And the black box is a building. You sight along a wall of a building until you are exactly level with it, take a waypoint and then go to the other side. In JOSM you can then join the way points, and get a box. Brian has another way of doing, by using a compass, but I haven't got a compass, and I'm not sure of the accuracy/distances involved. Good luck with Birmingham University, I may have a crack at it too in the next few weeks. [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Mapping the University of Birmingham
Hello, I recently discovered openstreetmap, and it looks good! I live in Tamworth, which still has large gaps in its map. I'm trying to fill some of them. The University of Birmingham is half completed. As I work there, I'm trying to help completing it. I find it difficult to get good traces from my GPS device (Garmin GPSmap 60CSx). Does anyone of you have a good idea how to improve the accuracy of these traces? Thanks, Eike Ritter (tamritt) ___ Talk-gb-westmidlands mailing list Talk-gb-westmidlands@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb-westmidlands
