They all sound very useful sources of information
It would be a pity not to do something with them

btw i haven’t had time to do mapping for some months now due to work
commitments/overload but I hope to get back to co cork next week :)

2015-06-06 Thread Caroline Lewis
still at correcting a tile for cork co. [which is taking so long as roads etc
are v misaligned and streams missing ] but not sure how to add bridges
correctly - i split at the two nodes that define the bridge , add bridge tag
and then should i also tag as layer = 1?
hopefully will be able to map more cork townslands soon :)

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] upload problem

2015-02-25 Thread Caroline Lewis
Hi donal
only managed to get back to computer now - yes issues is resolved - thanks very
much to you and dave for help
I sync’d dataset and then ended up just accepting my changes as when i did both
it left the nodes but they were not ‘linked' as a waterway.
it was a bit odd as waterway is not on a boundary but the river it joins
crosses over - I hope i haven’t deleted anyones work….
is there a way to let people know that someone is editing a particular square
so as not to duplicate work or run into version probs?
anyhow i can upload changes again which i- i do upload often as i worry about
losing work!
thanks again
c.

Caroline did you resolve your issue?

The conflict is is due to someone modifying and uploading an object while
 you were still editing.

In the case of say a county or province relation, the other mapper may not
be editing in your immediate vicinity.

So you need to sync your dataset and then reconcile the differences ie do
you keep your modifications, their modifications or both.

In the case of a county relation normally you would keep both - ie you
both split a different way on different parts of the county.

 Have a look at https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Concepts/Conflict

Without knowing the details of the conflict normally I would say accept
both your and their changes into the relation and see what you end up with.

The longer you leave it the harder it can be to resolve.

If stuck, save your work-in-progress daatset as a osm file and pop into
 https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.oftc.net/osm-ie

Someone might be able to give your realtime help or even get your osm file
and try to resolve it for you.

Uploading often, especially if you are editing along a county boundary
helps avoid or minimize any conflict issues.

 Hi Caroline,

 Thanks for the info.

If you are using JOSM, sync the entire dataset.

It will tell you done with errors or conflicts or something similar.

You will then have the option to fix the individual conflicts by choosing
to keep either the version you have or the server version.

Once you choose for each conflict, click upload again to resolve all
 conflicts

Let me know how you get on

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] tags for highways

2015-02-04 Thread Caroline Lewis
Hi Dave
thanks for that - its very helpful
I love maps and don’t mind it being slow - its very interesting studying the
areas is such detail!!!
I’ll make a note of your tag advice and follow it - i will have to go back and
edit /delete a few ;)
thanks again
c.
On 3 Feb 2015, at 22:59, Dave Corley davecor...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi Caroline,

How I typically tag is as follows

 - housing estates - highway=residential
 - rural roads (lower than secondary) - highway=unclassified
 - driveway to a house - highway=service + service=driveway.
 - forestry roads with no exit - highway=service
 - forestry road with through access - highway=unclassified or higher
 - bog road's - highway=service where the surface looks good from imagery
 after which I change to highway=track + tracktype=grade (1-5)

Note, I rarely map driveways unless they are special in some way e.g.
Driveway up to a stately Manor or something similar

As for buildings, in the context of townland mapping, I'm only mapping
significant buildings e.g. schools, chuches, GAA grounds, etc. Its a whole
other project to map all the buildings

It's worth keeping in mind, especially around Kerry that a lot of the
mapping in that area has been done by tourists so their grading of our
highways would be based on the roads where they are from. So for someone
from say Germany, anything with grass growing up the middle of it is a
track but we would map it as unclassified.

And yes, its slow going but many hands make light work. As it can seem
endless, it's a good idea to have a goal when you sit down to map.
Sometimes I'll take my lunch break at my desk and aim to map a specific
housing estate during that 30 mins. I often won't get it done but it gives
me something to come back to the next day to finish off.

Simply do what you can, when you can, and aim to keep your local area up to
date. Anything else is a bonus
