I've seen this sort of thing when someone (apparently) promotes or

It depends (YMMV, etc).

Sometimes changing the tag name_1 to old_name, etc. is the right answer.

Sometimes name_1 is a variation of name (Street vs Avenue; E vs East;
etc). Make name as accurate as you can and delete the others.

Other times the way should be split; each name is valid for a different
part.

When I find combinations like State Route 3 and Center Street, I
make sure the ref tag is correct and delete the State Route 3 name.

When more than one name is appropriate, use one name tag and separate
the names with semicolons (;).

I have to admit, sometimes I have no clue and just leave the name_* tags
alone. That leaves some hints for anyone with local knowledge that
works in that part of the map later.

We're both talking about suburban arterials (or at least as suburban as

[OSM-talk] Admin boundaries and streets

2009-08-11 Thread Joseph Scanlan
G'day,

Today I have a question about administrative boundaries, multipolygons,
and what to do when they fall along a road. But first, I'll ramble a
little and describe what I already have.

There's a way (boundary=administrative; member of Enterprise and
Paradise multipolygons) that runs *very* close to another way
(highway=tertiary, name=Bermuda Road). I haven't looked up any legal
definitions and can't say for sure that the admin boundary lies on the
street center line, the middle of the right of way, etc. but as a
practical matter Bermuda separates Enterprise from Paradise. (I'm not
making these names up, I live near [1]).

The admin boundary has (IMHO) extra nodes (they don't connect to another
way nor do they affect the shape of the boundary). To make things
worse, I've joined some of these nodes to streets as I worked on the
streets and land use in the area.

So... now that I have to fix things, I want to improve the map while I
go. I want to remove the boundary ways that echo Bermuda and add that
piece of Bermuda to the Enterprise and Paradise relations. The
relations already have boundary and admin_level tags.

Finally the question. Am I making a mistake? After all, I could keep
the boundary and Bermuda separate (correcting my errors and line up the
nodes that make it up).

Perhaps an additional tag to show stay duration.

stay=hourly;daily;weekly;monthly

Use any that apply. (There's probably a better tag to use than 'stay'.)

We used to have a motel in town that featured Free XXX Adult Movies on
their Marque (just in case hourly rates weren't a big enough hint).

little discretion. Hourly rate is a pretty clear hint as to what people
are doing there (not sleeping) but it still looks like a motel on the

Places that are more open could very well have businesses that deserve a
special tag. For example, I wouldn't tag any business in Clark County
as a brothel, the brothels look like other businesses and the
prostitutes will go somewhere else when the location draws too much
attention from law enforcement. In other Nevada counties, were
prostitution is legal, a brothel tag makes sense. These are clearly
labeled, well established businesses.

Just my point of view from a rather atypical city in the US desert south

Would I use the tag to describe a motel around here? No. One probably

Re: [OSM-talk] Parking aisle as boundary of car park not showing

2008-09-25 Thread Joseph Scanlan
Greetings,

The argument that we map street center lines and add width= or
est_width= tags to give them an area is persuasive. Probably because
that's what I already believed. ;-) We can also estimate width by
using the highway= or lanes= tags.

Mapping a car park to its edge (sidewalk, curb and gutter, etc.) also
gives us something with an area. I suppose ways could even be drawn to
show the entries to the car park.

So... applications that use the data (renderers, etc.) should be able to
deal with the case where the street center line is close to, but not
coincident with, the bounds of an area such as a car park.

The applications should also deal with the case where (part of) the
bounds of an area is also a highway or waterway. Consider the case
where a political boundary is defined by the center of a river. A
single zero-width way serves as both the river center line and the
political boundary. We have a similar case where a highway is carefully
designed to follow a political boundary.

It looks like we're back to map what's on the ground and our data
consumers will use or ignore it as appropriate.

I've downloaded the SCL and converted it to lat/lon to use in xastir
http://www.xastir.org/
My current copy is a little old. I'll find my notes and get a fresh
copy.

I can help you with the convert shapefile to .osm step, as I am slowly
working on the SHP - OSM script mentioned previously on this list.

Thanks. I'm an old Fortran programmer who's learned to hack together
Java, PERL. etc. but I've never tried reading/writing shapefiles or XML.
Should be fun to learn.

Initial import:

STRCLASS is the street class as defined by Clark County GIS (CCGIS).

1 for each STRCLASS in county shapefile
2 create scl.osm preserving attributes as ccgis: tags
3 extract working.osm from planet.osm with the same
bounding box as scl.osm
4 remove ways from scl.osm that are already in working.osm
(by comparing ccgis: tags)
5 use JOSM to replace TIGER ways with ways from scl.osm
6 upload changes
7 relax until planet.osm is updated
8 next STRCLASS

Step 1 may not be as simple as iterating through STRCLASS. The CCGIS
data doesn't clearly identify motorways. I plan to do these in the
first iteration by selecting on STRNAME. (That's what inspired step 4.)

Steps 2, 3, and 4 should be automated with a script.

Updates:

1 create scl.osm preserving attributes as ccgis: tags
2 extract working.osm from planet.osm with the same
bounding box as scl.osm
3 create add.osm, delete.osm, and change.osm by comparing
ccgis: tags in scl.osm and working.osm
4 review changes.osm with JOSM and upload
5 review add.osm with JOSM and upload
6 process delete.osm (but how?)
