Re: [Talk-in] So much to do, have so much of time, but lack direction : please help

2020-12-30 Thread mayur...@kathe.in
Okay, I've decided to start small, I'm going to work through my current
location in the western suburbs of Mumbai and try to setup major POIs first
then move to minor ones. When I've gained enough experience and consequently
skill, I'll return to mapping my native place again, I'll have to travel 5
hours a day for that, but it'll be fun going there 5~6 days a week and meeting
my relatives and childhood buddies on a regular basis, I just might end-up
re-establishing my roots out there.

Would someone please point me to a page which outlines the instructions to get
started-off in a simple manner, it's been over 4 years and I've forgotten most
of what was required. Also, what's the bare minimum equipment and software
required? Would an Android-based smartphone with some OSM-related application
do the job? Else, please suggest/recommend.

Thank you.

2020-12-30 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Mayurash, Shibu,

Have a look at :
https://tasks.teachosm.org/contribute?difficulty=ALL=india
This is the same kind of mapping task manager as HOTOSM, but less "hot" :P
Please be logged in with your OSM login to see the maps in the projects
properly.

I've created the "India.MH..." series for mapping rural roads. Beautiful
countryside, just connect the state highways main roads etc to villages and
hamlets. And if you come across a habitation that has no place marker, pls
add a village/hamlet pin (no need of name) to it - really helps in other
projects that look for such pins to guide mappers.

I've created some video walkthroughs of these tasks to understand what all
to do, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlHt4CSqbX4

PS: Want to add a task of your district / area for mapping rural roads? Let
me know.

Hi all,
I am assuming lot of others are also want to start contributing, but are afraid
to ask or not able to start big.
Could you please point out to a (non-urgent)task list which members are take up
and work on their own speed/leisure.

Subject: [Talk-in] So much to do, have so much of time, but lack direction :
please help

I used to frequent this list while I was trying to map my native place, but
that was way back, and since then I've been mostly embroiled in a lot of issues
regarding disposing off that place and focusing on my commercial engagements
and day-to-day activities.
I'm now done with everything, including taking an almost month-long break, and
would now like to contribute a whole lot of my time and energy towards
furthering work on OSM, especially in Mumbai, India.

Would someone please suggest work/issues to tackle or at least point me to a
page that does?
Would also be nice if I could be guided on the kind of equipment to purchase
for any legwork as I currently only own a x64 laptop (running RHEL Workstation)
and a feature phone.

Thank you.
