Just curious about this guys ...

Technically, one can also get certain details from OSM and add it to Google
Map Makers, right?

Just a request to the would be Bounty Mapper in Boracay:
Please make a brief write-up on how you did it. This would be a good
case study for other orgs/company wanting specific areas included in
OSM.

Good luck and enjoy!

It took me 2 1/2 energetic days to collect the data for the original OSM
Boracay map - which I think is still pretty much everything you see bar some
new side roads and tracks. Exclusively on foot with two motorbike taxi rides.
That included location and digital photo of every hotel, main tourist points
(ferry, Mount Luho, Bat Cave ...), most restaurants and most tourist-oriented
shops. I'd add another day if you need to go into the hotels to get contact
info. Or you can cut some time off by hiring a bicycle - I believe there was a
place in the D'Mall area, I'll check and add it if I have time.

FYI, I've contributed the hotel locations and tourist points already; the rest
was for a potentially-commercial project but I may release it later.

[talk-ph] OSM Vacation Offer + OpenStreetMap.org.ph Stats

2009-02-19 Thread Ahmed Farooq
Bah bids :) Our entire purpose was to 1) Ideally work within the existing
OSM community and 2) Use it as a good example of open source working with a
commercial example.

Yesterday was the advocacy website's highest traffic day - 64 uniques
(ignoring the day when we sent out the TopBlogs.com.ph massmail, which
resulted in almost 200 uniques). Of those 64, 24 of them found us through
search engines - 11 Google, 11 Yahoo, and 4 MSN/Live. 20 different keywords
were used - which means we are getting a good random spread of people - from
'urdaneta city map' to 'streets map of bacolod city' to 'free street map of
manila philippines'. While the bounce rate is high, the fact that it is not
100% (it is 61%) means that people, likely after finding the map they were
looking for, still do explore what the site is about. This means they should
end up learning about the OSM Project - which is good for all.

Re: [talk-ph] OSM Vacation Offer

2009-02-19 Thread Eugene Alvin Villar
I ran this idea among some of my non-OSM friends and acquaintances and they
seem interested ("tempting" is the word).

A travel-photoblogger expressed a concern that P25K might not be enough if
you really wanted to create a Boracay directory (complete with pictures,
contact info, coordinates, etc. of each and every resort, restaurant, and
hotel). Also someone asked, who will shoulder the travel-related expenses?

I'll do some research to get a rough estimate on how long it will likely
take to map the whole of Boracay so we'll know what travel package to get
(3D 2N? or 4D 3N?). I remember it taking me about an hour to walk the whole
stretch of White Beach so it will probably take a whole day just to map out
the White Beach properties.

[talk-ph] OSM Vacation Offer

2009-02-19 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Hi,

Got an offer here I think would be hard to resist, summer is coming and
Boracay is a hot spot, we own Boracay.com.ph and have decided to develop
it to its full potential, essentially we would like Boracay mapped.

It's a great cross over for both commercial and open source purposes.

So, we are looking to pay 25,000 pesos for someone to go and map and
index all of Boracay, the entire island. By index we mean gather
information on every single point of interest (beaches, restaurants,
hotels etc), get that location's GPS coords, picture with a Digicam and
map the place out in OSM.

So who's up for a vacation? E-mail me at an...@enthropia.com if you want
to discuss further.

Regards,

Andre Marcelo-Tanner
