[talk-ph] Startup Weekend Manila October 21-23, 2011

2011-10-11 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner

Anyone going to this?

http://manila.startupweekend.org/

"Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a
web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible
business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together
people with different skillsets - primarily software developers,
graphics designers and business people - to build applications and
develop a commercial case around them."

Who will I see there?

To: "t...@openstreetmap.org"

The State of the Map Committee is excited to announce a program to
cover full travel and accommodations costs for mappers to attend State
of the Map 2011 in Denver, Colorado (United States). We’re seeking
nominations from the community for potential mappers.

We are seeking people from places where costs would prohibit
attendance, developing countries, and places that are “interesting”
geopolitically. The ideal candidates for funding are from countries
with a small OSM community, perhaps just a few mappers in total. They
have made a significant start at mapping their city, either through
imagery or with their own GPS, and are directly familiar with the
process of OSM. They may have started communicating among themselves,
and made plans and scoped out the process for their local district.
But, the community is nowhere near critical mass, and they need the
inspiration and support to take OSM to the next level.

We need to act fast! State of the Map is just over 3 and a half months
away, tickets and visas need to be arranged. In order to allow enough
time for all the arrangements, the nomination period will be short,
and ending at Sunday, June 25th. The number of scholarships rewarded
will be based on the success of fund-raising. From the nominations
received, we’ll review and invite scholars in late June.

Please send your nominations to scholars...@stateofthemap.org. For
each nomination, include the mappers name, OSM user name, email
address, location, and a paragraph or two on why they’d be great to
have at SOTM. Self nominations are accepted.

Please forward this message to other relevant local OSM and mapping
lists and social media!

As for regions, here are a few regions that seem to fit the bill, but
nominations are not limited to these places at all.

Eastern and Southern Europe: Belarus, Kosovo, Bulgaria
Arab States: Tunisia, Bahrain, Jordan
Asia: Nepal, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Indonesia
Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia, Guatemala
Africa: Liberia, Ivory Coast, Swaziland

Sponsor-a-Mapper

In previous years there has been a scholarship program to help mappers
who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend get to State of the Map. This
year we are announces an “Sponsor-A-Mapper” program. There are plenty
of deserving individuals from all of the world that can’t afford to
attend SotM. To help them be able to come join the community in person
in Denver why don’t you consider paying to cover a portion of the cost
of their ticket?

We are attempting to raise an average of $2,500 USD per mapper in
order to be sure to cover their costs. This will vary slightly by
transportation costs depending from where the select scholarships are
traveling.

The more money we raise the more mappers we can sponsor!

To Sponsor-a-Mapper please email scholars...@stateofthemap.org

Thank you!

Any help getting this out to non-English speaking mailing lists much

In summary: This only affects you if you are an OpenStreetMap

Once you have something which can upload, you just figure out how to
display the logs online using a website or a 3rd party service.

Something like Sportstracklive or its competitors let you track yourself
live using a phone or similar device and display it live online, the
problem with constant upload is the battery drain, and well GPRS charges
but im sure an 1200 unlimited 3G subscription might offset that.

It's cool for live tracking as longs its not a security issue, and allow

[talk-ph] Corregidor Mapping Party

2010-05-19 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Maybe for future planning this, we could solicit donations from inns on
the island or from Sun Cruises. I think this is the list of places:
(1) Corregidor Inn - by far the best accomodation but the most expensive.
(2) MacArthur's Cafe - near the Lorcha dock on the north side of
Bottomside. (Bottomside is the area where you landed on the island).
They have a few cottage style rooms, basic accommodation.
(3) Corregidor Cove Cafe - they have a few cottages on the ocean front
on the south side of Bottomside. Again basic accommodation.
(4) Sea Calm Inn - located up the hill between Bottomside and
Middleside. Also known as the 'hostel'. The sign there says P650night.
(09189442884 or 09185241503)

Maybe offer them to map the place for free, just free stay or stipend,
and we can show them how to print a new and updated map or how they can
get the map image and add their own graphics to it to make their own
'Tourist' Map of the Island that they can sell or make use of

Free mapping, what better value than free mapping? :)

How can he draw the exact road alignments on a blank map just from what

Yes he may know what road is here and there but he can not trace it from
Google Maps or another copyrighted map source. He can not even align it
by comparing it to Google maps and adjusting.
Sure he can add POIs from memory, but road alignment and position is
something that requires a map source with permission or GPS traces correct?
Pls explain to him how if there are maps copied from a copyright source,
OSM can be sued and shutdown by a lawsuit, that is why the organization
is very careful and vigilant about its mapping sources.
He wouldn't want OSM to be shut down right?

Does anyone know of any other OSM POI collectors for mobile phones? I
want one for my BB.

2010-03-11 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
- Will we be needing walking papers? Is anyone going to print them all,
should we bring a printer perhaps or print them beforehand :)
- If we print walking papers will someone have a scanner? :) Or do we
use a digicam haha
- Will there be banners for the cars, and information sheets incase
people ask wth we're doing.

Ah very nice page design.
Does OSM not have some kind of standard pamphlet for an intro to OSM and
mapping using JOSM or potchlatch?

I might go if I'm available that day and maybe we can get our docs
agreed upon and signed there. Will bring car and Blackberry GPS+Laptop

I suggest using bit.ly and a custom name since
#1 its a LOT shorter :)
#2 its probably the most popular redirector
#3 we can use that URL only for posters and can track through bit.ly how

[talk-ph] Announcing: OSM-PH Marikina Mapping Party

2010-02-28 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
I agree with the small details on the posters.
Also agree with Ronny on the URLs, it isnt a webpage. We could use OSMPH
domain but even that is long, how bout something like
bit.ly/MarikinaMappingParty or something very easy to remember. and I
suggest 1 link only. Maybe to the wiki page or the Facebook event page,
whichever works better for newbies. Also the link should be much bigger.
Looking at the poster tells me nothing about how do i join or where to
go. There needs to be a large Call to Action, like To Join Visit
http://bit.ly/OSMPHMarikina
etc

all the other details as Eugene said work better in a brochure. The
brain can only process so much information when passing by a poster.
Also I suggest putting the main information on the black background
since that stands out more.

Will these be placed around the places in Marikina

In regards to the event, where would we be meeting exactly, what if
someone had no internet but wanted to join, they couldnt just go to
those big malls, an exact location is needed too maybe.

Yes I think ideally How-To articles and such guides should go on the

Or say everyone that cant go on the wiki can go in the blog if its meant

[talk-ph] City in well city names

2010-02-24 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Yes interesting topic. In my research on this for the OSM page, I found
that its subjective to include the City in the name, usually it makes
sense to include it for places where there is a province or municipality
of the same name.
technically speaking the official name is 'Lungsod ng Manila etc'
which should translate to City of
So yes including City in the Name is the right way to do it, but its not
necessary in regular real life applications.

Any other opinions?

submitted their information so I can not even generate the docs needed

Hi,

Ok so we finally have all the incorporators and officers together.
Eugene agreed to be President, and I will be Tres/Sec. So from everyone
who agreed to be an incorporator here I need the following information
to proceed with the preparation of papers:

- Full Name
- Address
- Cedula (Community Tax Certificate, usually costs PHP5 at the Barangay,
if a Corporation might cost PHP500 at mayors office)
- TIN (Tax ID or Passport if Foreign or not in the country)

Once I have this information we can proceed with the signing which may
be complicated because of our locations but not impossible. The sooner I
get this information the better :)

Andre

Made a few updates to OpenStreetMap.org.ph -
http://www.openstreetmap.org.ph/

I made a list of all the cities and municipalities and links to their
maps, easy to browse: http://www.openstreetmap.org.ph/viewall.php (not
all locations are in the database but there are a lot)
Also entering some words in the search box on the main page will give
you a list of locations that are in the database, there are about 4,000
non-city locations :)

[talk-ph] Fwd: need help on mapping for ondoy/Kestana flood victims in Metro Manila

Hi,

Sorry was at the Search Engine Marketing Conference 2009 in Makati the
past few days, had a presentation and managed to get in 1 slide to pimp
OSM :)
On the other hand what would you guys need from us? I see lots of ideas
coming through, I agree also we should work with whatever solution works
best.
OSMs advantages are the ability to update right away on the map, to have
raw data, to have more accurate maps, and other things Gmaps cant do.
Maybe theres a way we can use this to help out the other projects?

[talk-ph] Draft "MoA" between the OSM-F and any possible localchapter

2009-08-06 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
What would be the point of paying? It says a local chapter can use the
logo and osm domain and promote osm. Isnt counter-productive to charge
an organization which wants to help improve OSM locally by its own
resources/costs? A per member fee is rather high, maybe a low chapter
fee would be ok, but what do they need the fees for anyway? Its just
like a way of saying this one is officially recognized. Also for paying
that fee what does the local chapter get in return? Do we get like gps
units, documents, paraphernalia? Stuff that helps us? Anyway I know its
all still under discussion but I think it wouldnt be worth paying unless
there is just reason and the members here agree to it.
