[Talk-us] US Chapter Temporary Board Nomination
I would like to thank Richard Weait for nominating me for the temporary board of OpenStreetMap US, and I am pleased to accept the nomination. I'm Peter Batty, I'm a Brit living in the USA, in downtown Denver, I hosted the first mapping party here (and several since), and am an active mapper. I've worked in the geospatial industry for 20+ years. I am currently Vice President of Geospatial Technology at Ubisense. I have previously been CTO at 2 of the 3 largest geospatial software companies, Intergraph and Smallworld (now part of GE). I'm on the Advisory Boards of FortiusOne and PublicEarth. I have been a founder of two startups, Spatial Networking and Ten Sails, the company that provided early stage funding to and later merged with Ubisense. I've worked as Chief Technology Advisor at Enspiria Solutions. I consulted with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help them initiate the AGCommons Project, focused on improving the incomes and lives of small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa through use of geospatial information. I served for 5 years on the board of GITA (the Geospatial Information and Technology Association http://www.gita.org), a leading geospatial industry association focused on education. Having been around geospatial data and applications for 20+ years, I think OSM is an awesome thing! I have done a lot to promote OSM by discussing it in various conference presentations around the world, and on my blog ( http://geothought.blogspot.com) and twitter (http://twitter.com/pmbatty). I gave a keynote talk at State of the Map 2009 in Amsterdam on "Geodata creation: past, present and future" (http://www.vimeo.com/5589282). As I mentioned above, I have organized several mapping parties in Denver, and I was also a primary organizer of last year's WhereCamp5280 event in Denver. I have served on the board of two non-profit organizations, GITA and my Home Owners' Assocation in Denver (where I was President); on the advisory boards of two small companies as mentioned above; and on the executive management teams of two of the world's top 200 software companies, as well as two startups. I believe that this broad experience would be valuable to the US OSM board. I feel I am a good team player and good at mediating and resolving issues - for example I tried to be a calming influence during the recent heated OSM license debates! I think that my profile and contacts in the geospatial industry can help OSM US liaise with other groups that may be able to help us and promote participation in and usage of OSM, such as GITA, URISA, USGS and others. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] [Warning: Potential Flamewar] Clarifying Interstate Relations
posted that earlier already mkgmap does what you put in the style file. default style does not include ref relations. mapnik doesn't support it don't know about osmarender you can update the wiki. everyone can edit. I don't care and will not start a edit war or wiki edit war because this data isn't used yet and there is better things to do. Re: [Talk-us] [Warning: Potential Flamewar] Clarifying Interstate Relations
Yes, I know it's arguably tagging for the renderer, but can someone else update the WIKI to explain how mkgmap, mapnik, and osmarender handle the ref tag? AFAIK NE2 is tagging for the editor in this case. Thanks, Chris Hunter DiverCTH On Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 6:07 PM, Richard Welty wrote: > On 2/8/10 12:19 AM, Chris Hunter wrote: > > I don't think NE2 is on any of these mailing lists. Re: [Talk-us] Conflicts of Interest
Hi, I currently work as a Community Ambassador at CloudMade. As a Community Ambassador I spend a majority of my time helping communities organize mapping events and working with non-profit organizations to help them utilize OSM as a tool to increase education about open geodata and geospatial education in general. More information about me, the company I work for and my position can be found on my user page at : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Thea_Clay In the interest of openness I think it is important to note that I am running for the OSM-US board as an individual, not as a CloudMade employee or as part of my duties as a Community Ambassador. I work on the OSM-US local chapter in my free time and do not in anyway represent the views or interests of the company in this capacity. Anything a reasonable outsider could conclude is a potential conflict. I think that for your own good so it's not a surprise to people, all those running for the board of OSMF-US should be upfront about it. I don't think there's any shame in it, but I can tell you from experience that people get very upset if you're not clear about everything from day 1. Yours &c. It was an oversight with announcing my acceptance that I didn't mention it. FortiusOne uses OSM tiles on our public site http://www.geocommons.com as well as the appliances. I personally maintain an open source geocoder as part of my job which I would love to be able to put OSM address data in at some point (when there is better US coverage). The local DC OSM group meets occasionally in the FortiusOne office, since the space is free and available. -Kate On Fri, Feb 12, 2010 at 11:29 AM, SteveC wrote: > Hi > > One of the things we found at the OSMF is that you really need to be open > about any potential conflicts of interest, like where you work or if you hold > shares in TeleAtlas... that kind of thing. Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
I accept the nomination to serve on the US OpenStreetMap Chapter board. In forming the US OpenStreetMap Chapter, I would bring five years of experience with the Wikimedia Foundation as a volunteer, including involvement with Foundation issues. This past year, I have worked on strategy planning to help advise the Wikimedia Foundation on its future direction and have been involved in program planning and organizing Wikimania (Wikimedia annual conference) in 2008 and 2009. In the United States, I am one of the DC meetup organizers and liaison with the New York City Wikimedia chapter, the first in the United States. We are in discussion to expand the NYC chapter to include the Washington DC area, as well as Boston and other parts of the Northeast United States and perhaps expand one day to become the US chapter. With my education and background is in GIS and geography, being involved with OpenStreetMap for the past year has been a natural fit. Since summer, I have been actively involved with the MappingDC group, including organizing mapping parties and more recently, have served as project coordinator for OpenStreetMap projects for CrisisCommons and CrisisCamp Haiti, taking place over the past month in cities across the US and internationally. For the US OpenStreetMap chapter, I would help guide the organization through the process of incorporation, with particular attention to issues relating to establishing a chapters agreement with the OpenStreetMap Foundation, and be able to take on tasks needed to file incorporation and other needed tasks. I would also seek out legal advice, through contacts at Wikimedia and CrisisCommons, to review the chapters agreement, other documents, etc. I would advise, drawing on lessons learned on what has worked for Wikimedia and its chapters, what has not worked so well, and what we have learned from other similar organizations through the strategy planning process, along with with understanding of how the OpenStreetMap organizational structure differs from Wikimedia as a membership organization and in other ways. -Katie Filbert @filbertkm ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
